COMPARATIVE STUDY ON RELIABILITY BETWEEN ONLINE AND PAPER-BASED VERSIONS OF A TEST FOR READING IN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to examine how reliable the results of the internet-based version of a reading test are, with a view to replacing paper tests with the online versions. This is of increasing importance as universities focus on improving efficiency and supporting SDGs by going paperless. The study was also suggested by the need to test reading comprehension of larger numbers of students across the university and deliver meaningful results on which to base intensive programs of instruction quickly. The Extensive Reading Foundation’s online reading test and the (now discontinued) Edinburgh Project for Extensive Reading’s placement test (paper-based), were administered to university students under controlled conditions, and the data was analyzed for possible relationships. An initial one-way ANOVA analysis of the results suggested little evidence of a relationship between online and paper-based test scores. However, further analysis using other measures found evidence of interaction between them, and a second ANOVA analysis, only of scores for students who had completed all versions of the test found a significant relationship. Familiarity with both versions of the test was considered as a possible factor. Although this is only a small-scale study, the findings help to support the argument for adopting the online version of the test, with its various potential benefits to schools and educators

The Indonesian government encourages the process of internationalization of higher education by increaseing the number of foreign students studying in Indonesia. However, based on UNESCO student flow data in 2018, it can be concluded that Indonesia is not yet a popular study destination for students even in the ASEAN. Therefore it is necessary to investigate the factors that drive foreign students to choose Indonesia as their education location. The factors examined are: Country Environment with sub variables perception about Indonesia, academic quality, environment (climate and weather), marketing programs, immigration process, opportunities to learn language and culture,  Institutional characteristics with sub variable programs offered, significant others who influence country choice, creative capital, significant others who influence university selection, university academic quality, financial assistance/scholarships, interaction with lecturers and research topics, university location, City Location with sub variable diversity, level of tolerance and nondiscrimination factors. Data were collected through questionnaires to 106 foreign students studying in Indonesia. The data analysis technique used Principal Component Analysis (CPA). The results show that there are 2 new factors namely academic and scholarship factor and geographic and bilateral relationships factor that are considered by foreign students to choose Indonesia as their study destination

Putrajaya, Malaysia was developed by Putrajaya Corporation with a purpose of achieving sustainability through maintaining a balance between the social aspect, the environment and the economy.  The planning was based on two fundamental concepts i.e. city in the garden and the intelligent city. In line with this target, various initiatives to create a better quality of life for the residents had been incorporated into the planning and design of the neighborhoods. Among these initiatives include consideration towards the needs of children in their daily routine. This paper discusses the findings of a study done to assess the residential environment in Precinct 11 Putrajaya in terms of the level of child-friendliness. The study evaluates five common areas where children often goes to within an urban neighborhood and its surroundings. The five areas are the residential blocks, parks and recreation spaces, school environment, commercial centers and community facilities area.  Primary data were gathered through guided observation, capturing of images through photography and also face-to-face interviews with adults who have children aged between 7 to 12 years old at the selected locations during a two-week long field survey.  The observation checklist and the questionnaire were based on indicators that reflect child-friendliness in terms of the social and physical environments. The study found that the physical environments in most areas are responsive to children’s needs.  However, the social interactions in Putrajaya Precinct 11 neighborhoods are found to be limited and confined. Based on the findings and indicators of a child-friendly environment, several suggestions are outlined at the end of the paper in an effort to promote a better quality of life for children in the urban neighborhoods

    Get PDF
Perception of our environment helps us to understand and react to our environment. But, in the perception process, a number of factors seem to influence perception for a landscape such as age.  Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether the age factors among landscape architect’s affects for landscape perception of tropical recreational forest in Malaysia. A study was conducted in Ampang Recreational Forest, Selangor as a case study. This study using a questionnaire with photographs surrogates to gather data from 119 expert landscape architects. Results have shown that there is no statistical significant effect of age among professional landscape architects in perception for tropical recreational forest landscapes in this study. Thus, this result portrays that age of the respondent in the same group does not statistically affect landscape perception

Financial capital associated with the ownership of money is an important factor in candidates’ nomination in an election. For candidates who have substantial financial capital, it is assumed that they can be easier to be elected. This argument can also be used to discuss the case of the nomination of Chinese-Indonesian Women. This study aims to explain how money is used by Chinese-Indonesian women candidates in Semarang City in the 2014 legislative election and how this factor can support their wining. Using qualitative research methods with primary data source obtained from in-depth interviews to four Chinese-Indonesian women candidates and elites from their bearer party in Semarang City, it is known that financial capital was used to finance each candidate's campaign needs. Financial capital they owned could also be their supremacy compared to other candidates that was promoted by them in the recruitment process within the party. Unfortunately, this capital had not been able to deliver all Chinese women candidate to be elected as MPs. Factors that support their wining were the socio-cultural closeness capital with voters and kinship ties with male elites

LET’S VACATION IN JAPAN! A STUDY OF INDONESIAN IMAGES OF JAPAN THROUGH TOURISM

    Get PDF
The number of outbound Indonesian travelers is rapidly increasing, especially in travel to long-haul destinations. For these travelers, Japan is considered a favorite and trendy destination. This is due not only to Indonesia’s own push factors like its stable economy, but also structural changes in Japan. In 2011, the total number of foreign travelers to Japan dropped sharply after the horrible news of an earthquake and tsunami in the Tohoku area and the serious atomic power plant accident that followed in Fukushima. After these catastrophic disasters, the Japanese government intensely promoted inbound tourism to recover its damaged economy; this included waving visa requirements for short-term stays for visitors from countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The Japan Tourism Agency and the Japan National Tourism Organization, as well as travel agents and aviation companies, are important actors in promoting inbound tourism to Japan. As a result, compared with 2011, the number of Indonesian travelers in 2017 increased by approximately 5.7 times. Along with travelers’ personal decisions, the roles of government bodies and private companies are very important for understanding the recent tourism dynamics. Travelers do not always need a correct and holistic understanding of the culture, but something “authentic,” “unique,” or “exotic” for them to share with friends and family. This paper also shows how Indonesian travelers to Japan reflectively reconstruct and disseminate stereotypical images of the country through various channels including video sharing services like YouTube, or social network services like Instagram and Facebook. Although biased and limited, the accumulation and dissemination of Indonesians’ personal experiences are now changing their images of Japan from monotonous to empirical and concrete.&nbsp

Research results on Intentional Learning proved positive implications in the teaching and learning processes.  In this study, the researcher analyzed data gathered from the implementation of Intentional Learning Questionnaire in Electric Circuit (ILQ-EC) and Intentional Learning Module (ILM) as the intentional learning instruments. The over-all study involves implementation of ILQ-EC, development of ILM and testing its effectiveness using quantitative and qualitative research analysis. Previous research used ILQ-EC in identifying motivation and learning strategies factors which were highly correlated and predictive to conceptual understanding of student respondents. These factors served as the benchmark in the development and testing of ILM for this present study. Results for both quantitative and qualitative analysis showed that high gainers tend to be more intentional, specifically, more critical thinker and with higher perceived competence than low gainers. Moreover, average normal gains of the student-participants after using ILM was higher compared to previous research results using different learning approaches. ILM evaluation based on student responses also confirmed the influence of ILM in their learning gains. Thus, enhancing intentionality proved significant effect in the teaching and learning process

    Get PDF
This paper broadly investigated the efficacy of tendering process on outsourced revenue collection in Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC) and Morogoro Municipal Council (MMC) in Tanzania. The objective of this study was to examine how tendering process was effective on outsourced revenue collection in KMC and MMC. The study adopted the case study research design and the methods of data collection were interviews and documentary review. The findings indicate that the tendering of revenue collection was futile because the criteria for selecting the bidders were not transparent due to the fact that tenders were not advertised by MMC and MMC in widely circulated media, as such they could not be accessed by some of the prospective bidders in studied councils. The tenders were offered to companies lacking the required criteria, such as resources, and so were unable to fulfil their contractual obligations after being selected to collect revenue in KMC and MMC. It therefore concluded that ineffectiveness of the tendering process in MMC and KMC resulted in awarding tenders to Companies lacking the required capacity to collect revenue which consequently contributed to dismal revenue collection in studied Councils. This study recommends that Councils should consider the merit of the companies in awarding tenders for revenue collection and comply to Public Procurement Act No.7 of 2011.&nbsp

The types of Taiwanese films are becoming more and more abundant, especially those with “thriller” or “horror” elements. In addition to the increase in these types of film production, there are more brilliant box office performances. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to conduct a more in-depth analysis of this type of films. Analyzing the role design and plot direction in the films, so that there is a narrative structure can be referenced in this type of works. This study adopted text analysis, and coupled with the character functions theory proposed by scholar Propp. This study analyzed the functionalities of the main characters in the famous domestic movie “The Tag-Along”. The research results show that there are 6 types of functional characters in “The Tag-Along”: the villain, the helper, the donor, the dispatcher, the hero and the princess. In the 31 character functions listed by Propp, the film contains 18 of them, and these 18 functions are used to describe the story. The film of thriller and horror types are still developing in Taiwan, and the researchers expect to use this research result to find the narrative structure of this type of films. Filmmakers will have a basic structure for reference when creating such movies, and at the same time it extends the other possibilities of this type of films in the development of characters and plots
