MICHAEL ONDAATJE’S RUNNING IN THE FAMILY: A CASE OF SELF IDENTITY

    Get PDF
Running in the family is more than an autobiography of Ondaatje.  Quite contrary to the purpose of narrating his history, Ondaatje uses it as a means to locate and discover himself through his writing. The basic quest of Ondaatje’s novel is to search for his identity in the mirrors of his past. The quest for his history, is in fact a quest for himself and he mounts on this quest through the novel ‘Running in the Family’. “Ondaatje’s relationship to his past is in process-and the text itself is an exploration of that process (Joanne 45-6).” He tries to locate himself in the shadows of his father, his native land Ceylon, his family relationships and tries to piece together the random, frivolous life that he remembers of Ceylon. And it is heartening to realize in the first chapter that Ondaatje has absented himself from his own autobiography in lieu of his perception that his own identity can only be located if he anchors the identity of the peripheral characters

“MAKING-OF” – SUCCESSFULLY PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTING PEER-TO-PEER LECTURE FILMS

    Get PDF
Recently films have been implemented in higher education as additional audio and visual stimulus. Students like to work with lecture films which cover different learning methodologies. If videos are analogous to the desired learning outcomes of the lecture they are considered a reinforcement, rather than a replacement for lectures. However, filming a lecture and providing this as a video lecture is not meant by a lecture video that covers science on short sequences. To interest students` and become a seriously accepted learning material lecture films need to be of a certain standard. Videos on material science are successfully embedded in “inverted classroom” teaching scenarios for mechanical and automotive engineering students at HTW Berlin in their first year. Initially encouraged by students a set of lecture videos is produced during a one term semester project each semester by 3rd year students (peer-to-peer approach). The “making-of” is attended carefully by lecturers and film experts. But, the peer-to-peer approach is very important only then students` needs, learning approach and individual perspective on teaching material is first hand included in the videos. Because we find lecturers very interested in our approach and at the same time certain aspects have to be taken into account to successfully prepare peer-to-peer lecture films we practically contribute to the most important aspects to start and succeed in the “making-of” of lecture videos

    Get PDF
The main purposes of the research were to investigate how to teach Heuristic strategies to promote students solving the problem, and to study the ability of tenth grade students who had been taught to solve mathematic problems by utilizing the Heuristic method. The target group consisted of 47 grade 10 students at Wattanothai Payap school, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. The researcher conducted classroom action research with 3 cycles. Instruments included lesson plans, students’ written work, and the problem-solving ability test. Data was analyzed by frequency, percentage, and content analysis. The results showed that 1) The teaching approach utilizing Heuristic strategies used in this research consisted of the following steps: the teacher encouraged the students to experiment by using their own strategies, then challenged them to utilize the complicated strategies, Guess-check-revise, Systematic experimentation (making a table, equation), and Use of graph of function. 2) Results from the test showed that 35 students of the 47 students (74.46%) passed the criteria (70% of total score). The strategies most students used were Systematic experimentation, and Guess-check-revise, and Use of graphs of function, respectively. From the results, the researcher learned that the key success factors that made students dare to solve problems, were to give them more tools to use and more opportunities to learn from each other. Students were able to freely choose their own way to solve problems without any fear

INFLUENCE OF GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD (GTM) ON LIBYAN STUDENTS’ ENGLISH PERFORMANCE IN COMMUNICATIVE SITUATIONS

    Get PDF
In the past and present, the Libyan government has offered free schooling at all levels in public education. Till the early past, more specifically till 2014, the Libyan government used to send honored students at high school levels to pursue their university studies overseas, honored students at university levels to pursue their masters’ degrees overseas, and holders of masters’ degrees to pursue their doctorates’ degrees overseas, specifically the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries all over the world. English was taught as a foreign language at school from the 5th grade, but it is has been taught from 1st grade since 2016. Although all these efforts conducted by the Libyan government, the use of Libyan students’ English performance in communicative situations has been unsatisfactory. Many studies and research regarding Libyan contexts reveal that the main reason for this dissatisfaction is attributed to the method of teaching English used at Libyan schools. Thus, this study endeavored to find out the influence of this method on Libyan students’ English performance when communicating in English in reality. This study follows qualitative research method, basing on secondary recourses represented in reviewing of literature and primary recourses represented in interviewing ten Libyan teachers of English. The study has obtained several findings, the most important of which is that GTM does not help Libyan students use English communicatively in reality; rather, it helps them know about English as a class subject. The study presents some recommendations based on the findings obtained. The most important of which is that teachers of English should use other appropriate methods of teaching that help Libyan students use English in communicative situations, and grammar should be taught in context

THE INFLUENCE OF PERSONALITY TYPE ON FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING: A CRITIQUE OF THE ACCELERATIVE INTEGRATED METHOD

    Get PDF
The Accelerative Integrated Method (AIM) is an inductive approach to second language acquisition. It was developed in Canada in 1999 by Wendy Maxwell to teach French in primary school. The AIM is currently being used to teach also English, Spanish, Mandarin and Japanese in over 10,000 primary and secondary schools in the world. The method privileges meaning-making and effective communication through a gesture approach. Maxwell claims that the AIM allows learners to reach high levels of communicative proficiency quickly, mainly through an emotional engagement with the language that they learn through dance, drama and creative writing. This paper critically evaluates the AIM; it focuses on how much it draws and impacts on the learner’s personality. It also explores the appropriateness of the AIM for secondary school students who have a higher cognitive developmental age than primary students for whom the AIM was originally designed. The discussion is informed by theories on second language acquisition, emotion and personality type. The paper concludes by making recommendations on learning and teaching methodologies that can challenge and successfully engage foreign language learners while also developing in them intercultural literacy
