THE GERMINATION OF TRANSLANGUAGING: IN AND OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL CONTEXT

    Get PDF
In 1994, the term translanguaging emerged in the Welsh secondary schools. Its first use is attributed to Cen Williams who referred to this pedagogical practice as receiving the input in one language and producing in a different one. Translated later by Colin Baker, translanguaging has been extended to the scholarly literature to entrench, and become part of various educational and social domains. Pedagogical translanguaging is the name given to the language practice that takes place in the classroom context, while non-pedagogical translanguaging is the umbrella term for the bilinguals’ practices inside and outside the educational settings. Though the word translanguaging is frequently used in the literature, there is no exact definition to it, so the interest in this current language practice resulted in many definitions. This paper begins by reviewing the origins of translanguaging as well as its development from educational settings to outside the classroom then returning to the school. Furthermore, as translanguaging is controversial, the discrepancy between translanguaging and the different teaching and learning approaches and methods will be scrutinised to make a distinction between translanguaging and the use of the students’ home language. This can be better understood by explaining the notion of approach and how such a language practice can fall under the name of a teaching approach

The fast pace of big data analytics advancement makes it necessary for any organization to coincide it with their management and measurement process.  It has become essential for education sectors to analyze this for the development of both learning and academic activities (Shikha. A, 2014). Learning analytics (LA) is the measurement and analysis of the collection of data with regards to learners and their context for making learning more effective. LA is much concern with improving learner’s success. Four dimensions have been identified; data and environment, stakeholders, objectives, and methods. This paper investigates the impact of learning analytics on student’s performance. The focus group was students in Technology Management program at UTM SPACE, Kuala Lumpur. Two research objective has been identified; (i) to find the level of LA understanding among academic staff and (ii) to investigate the relationship between learning analytics and student performance. The research focused on (i) data collection and population at Centre of Diploma Studies, UTM SPACE, KL; (ii) the selected sample will be students in Technology Management’s program; (iii) the research focused on learning analytics with main focus on course assessment reports of core course which are (a) technology management and (b) operation management

Everyone learns, but not all learn in the same way. Understanding of an individual's natural or habitual pattern of processing information, acquiring knowledge and solving problems is considered to be beneficial in developing pedagogical process and enhancing effective learning. This study reviews the impacts of gender, cultural differences, and variations in disciplines to learning styles. With the aim to investigating the learning style variability, 955 students from the "digital native" generation studying at various institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, China, and Indonesia responded to the Felder-Silverman Index of Learning Styles (ILS) and a demographics questionnaire. It is found that gender does not affect the learning style of the students. All students of three nationalities appear to be visual learners. However, Malaysian and Chinese students prefer sensing and sequential learning while the Indonesian students prefer otherwise. Both engineering and business students appear to be similar type of learners except that engineering students are more sequential than the business students. Cultural and disciplinary variation do affect the way students in the digital era prefer to learn
