STRENGTHENING ASEAN CENTRALITY WITHIN THE INDO-PACIFIC REGION

    Get PDF
The emergence of Indo-Pacific terminology leads to an interesting path of cooperation within the arena between countries. The Indo-Pacific region, marked by the cross-geography of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, is home to some of the most diverse populations, international trade and global exports. Some countries have been questioned about the importance of this area, namely the U.S., Australia, Japan, People's Republic of China (PRC), India, and  the states in the Southeast Asia. A few sea districts, such as the South China Ocean, have contended most over the Indo-Pacific, and the Indian sea over the Malacca Strait has been a source of expanding oceanic security dangers. This paper focuses upon the challenges of the Indo-Pacific region, non-traditional oceanic threats like piracy and particularly related to the maritime strife, namely South China Sea dispute. The method used on this research is a qualitative method with a analytical descriptive approach. The purpose of this study is to discuss the ASEAN centrality in region as a form of maritime security cooperation without any country feeling left behind to accommodate all nations within the region. This new nomenclature reflects a glimpse of ASEAN's spirit as an ecosystem of peace, stability, and prosperity, including in addressing the region's inclusiveness and connectivity. The conclusion of the study indicates that ASEAN’s initiative needs to be addressed within the Indo-Pacific if the idea is increasingly institutionalized and major powers collaborate more closely. &nbsp

THE GIST OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY FOR LOCAL CULTURE PRESERVATION: INTRIGUING FAIRY TALES

    Get PDF
Fairy tales have long been used as learning materials for Indonesian as well as English subjects in secondary schools to instil and preserve local wisdom and culture in addition to enhancing students’ linguistic competence. Based on classroom observation and interview, current practices in schools show that learning activities developed out these materials revolve around students’ involvement in reading, comprehending, appreciating, and identifying moral stories of the tales, be it orally and or in written form. Through R & D procedure, involving several junior high school students in Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) and Central Java (Jateng), a digital media called “SoON” (Story on Odyssey Naturally) was used to develop those tales into more interactive and cognitively engaging learning materials (Littleyoung, 2015). Learning activities involve students not only to find information, retell, and identify moral story but further to enhance their soft skills and creativity through responding to the tales depending on students’ creativity. During the tryout, it was observed that the students were occupied doing all activities. Their high enthusiasm was observed in the last activity in which they got space/freedom to express themselves/their dreams. From students’ worksheet, it could be inferred that the resulting materials were also effective in exercising students’ creativity, and were effective as a means of character education. Based on the findings, the researchers contended that more folklore materials need to be converted into more innovative and interactive digital materials which are effective model not only for their preservation but for richer educational values.&nbsp

APPLYING INTERVENTIONS TO ENHANCE KNOWLEDGE OF MALAYSIAN CULTURAL ART FORMS

    Get PDF
In graphic design education, students are trained for the industry through practising and applying graphic design principles in various classroom and real life projects. While possessing the knowledge of these principles is important, the researcher, through her experience as a graphic design educator in Malaysia, finds that Malaysian students also need to have some knowledge and understanding of their own local, cultural art forms. This is because it could open more doorways for a designer to produce creative ideas that would be more relevant to the local audience. Therefore, in order to enhance her students’ knowledge and understanding of some Malaysian cultural art forms, the researcher used a case study action research method and applied interventions in her classroom of 20 graphic design students, underpinned by Cultural Responsive Teaching pedagogy. Various activities were carried out to scaffold students’ learning of the selected Malaysian cultural art forms. The activities were, a visit to a contemporary Malaysian art exhibition; participation in a batik workshop; a visit and hands-on experience making some craft work at a Mah Meri cultural village, and attending a talk about wayangkulit, as well as viewing some wayangkulit exhibits. Upon the completion of all activities, the students produced a work of design based on a local social/environmental/health issue of their choice. The researcher sought to find out if the students applied their knowledge of Malaysian cultural art forms into their work of design. Findings from studying the students’ design work show that not all of them applied the knowledge that they had gained from the activities. However, through focus group interviews, most students express that their knowledge has been enriched by participating in those activities

The study examined the utilization of a mobile application that is biology-based in the learning of some basic concepts among NCE II students in the Department of Biology, College of Education, Ikere, Ekiti State, Nigeria. Among all the NCE Part II students which constituted the population, 60 students were purposively chosen and eventually randomly sampled into individualized Bio-Apps and collaborative Bio-Apps of 30 students each. These Bio-Apps groups have functional smart phones and their smartphones have biology dictionary downloaded on them. The third group of 30 students are of the traditional classroom and were randomly selected from the population. In all, 90 students formed the sample for this study. All the groups were exposed to the same instructional contents in BIO 214 (Plant Pathology). The individualized mobile Bio-Apps group was made to check basic concepts in plant pathology from the biology dictionary on their smart phones and participated as the classes progressed. The collaborative Bio-Apps group was made to check those basic concepts in plant pathology from their mobile Bio-Apps and collaborated among themselves in clusters while the classes progressed; while the traditional group was without mobile bio-apps and taken through traditional instructional strategy. Standardized Biology Achievement Test was administered on the three groups. Two research questions and two hypotheses were raised and answered descriptively. The results from the analyses show that students in Mobile Bio-Apps groups performed better that their counterparts in traditional class. Meanwhile, students in the collaborative performed than those in the individualized mobile bio-app. It was therefore recommended among others that, Mobile Bio-App should be integrated into students’ learning of basic concepts in biology in a collaborative form so as to avoid distraction in using the mobile phones for something else other the learning while the teaching-learning lasted. &nbsp

Expatriates staying in hotels in Surabaya have indicated vast growing in number. Critical question is “how is the staff’s language competence to cope with this?” To make it sure, approach to hotel leaders and staff should be done for further investigation. Thus, this study examines (1) hotel leaders’ perception towards the hotel front officers’ English proficiency, (2) the need of English for Specific Purpose (ESP) test for hotel front office staff and (3) effort done to ensure good command of English of front office staff. For the purpose, a qualitative study employing a case study was conducted involving ten hotels and hotel leaders as well as front office staff. Source of data was derived from results of questionnaire, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and interviews. Actual needs on front officers’ English proficiency information were obtained from three ways; job-search websites, institutional e-mails and interview with hotel leaders. Results showed that specific English test to measure English proficiency for front office tasks did not actually exist since hotel leaders merely counted on the general interview during their recruitment process. Perceptions on their front office staff’s English proficiency were still below the passing grade for all type of hotels. To establish an ESP test for front office staff, Target Language Use (TLU) for Speaking and Writing can be broken-down into the followings:  18 were extracted as TLUs for speaking and 7 items were extracted to serve as TLUs for writing. Finally, based on the obtained TLUs, 14 questions for speaking and 5 questions for writing were constructed for suggested ESP test for hotel front office staff

CULTIVATING COMPASSION AT THE SCHOOL TO FIGHT OUT DISCRIMINATION PRACTICES

    Get PDF
Using interview sequences from collected data in the context of qualitative biographical studies of health practitioners - originating from Sub-Saharan- Africa and working in some European countries, this study focuses on the development/cultivation of Compassion, even in really difficult situations in the interaction with our fellow human beings in a globalized world. Facing rejection because of discrimination – e.g. the color of their skin, can be perceived by many persons as an offense and lead to victims automatically developing defensive behavior, which can most of the time only aggravate the already bad situation. How can using compassion help in those situations and what can educational settings contribute to cultivating compassion in the classrooms for better interpersonal relationships worldwide? Compassionate Education aims to prepare learners and instructors for cohabiting in a multicultural society, where differences are accepted and appreciated. It is thus crucial that political authorities, authors, teachers, and learners be directly involved in this global and vital issue

In this research, the impact of peer tutoring and group tutoring led to team learning approaches on the attitude of the students towards and achievement in biology. The thesis had been motivated by four research questions and six null hypotheses. The research had used a quasi-experimental method. In particular, the design of the un-equivalent control group. The sample size was 182 SS 1 students from the four sampled government senior high schools in Port-Harcourt metropolis, River State, Nigeria in four intact classrooms. Two of the classes were exposed to peer tutoring while the remaining two were exposed to peer-led team learning strategies. Biology Attitudinal Scale (BAS), and Biology Achievement Test (BAT) were data collection instruments. BAS construct validity was developed using factor analysis, while BAT material validity was calculated using the specification table. Reliability for BAS and BAT was obtained using formula 20 (K-R 20) from Cronbach Alpha and Kudar-Richardson. Mean and the standard deviation was used to answer the study questions while Covariance analysis (ANCOVA) was used to evaluate the hypotheses at 0.05 significance point. The findings showed that peer-led team learning approach is better than peer tutoring in enhancing the attitude and achievement of the students in biology. The implications of the findings were highlighted and recommendations made

    Get PDF
Technology advancement has taken a new shape in leading the world into digital civilization, remarkably in e-commerce, communication, and financial sectors.  Taking advantage of the technology, criminals have also digitalized their modus operandi targeting the digital society with fraud and cybercrimes, hence contributing illicit funds. To disguise the money trail to the illegal activities, illicit funds sourced from unlawful and fraudulent activities transformed into legal funds via a money-laundering scheme. Money laundering is perceived as a global threat where funds reverted to the criminal and enter a legitimate economy. To enable the criminals, maintain anonymity, and non-visible to the detection of law enforcement, money mules are positioned in the money laundering chain between actual criminal and illicit funds. Money mules are characters recruited by criminal networks to perform fund transfers by utilizing their accounts. Recruitment is done by offering a job with simple recruitment criteria and attractive income and rewards. This study will examine money mule recruitment and development of a model with related variables to establish the relationship between the aspect of job criteria awareness and the ability of the victims to detect the hidden criminal elements and exposure to law enforcement and derive into the decision to accept the job offer. In this research, both quantitative and qualitative approaches will be employed with surveys and interviews
