DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES: A CHALLENGE TO THE DECOLONIZATION OF KASHMIR
Decolonization of Kashmir is one of the oldest agenda at the United Nations. The world has witnessed a successful wave of decolonization in the second half of the 20th century. The spirit of decolonization was to transfer power to the indigenous population of a region by taking the doctrine of self-determination and political equality as its guiding principles. Recent unilateral acts by the BJP government to revoke the constitutional protection reserved for Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) are intended for relocating the populous boundaries through demographic changes. India drafted a project in 2015 aiming to build accommodations for thousands of Hindu residing in different parts of India in IOK. These demographic changes will harm the spirit of the right of self-determination – for any plebiscite being held in future – thereby leading Kashmir towards neo-colonialism. This paper highlights the politico-legal aspects of the concept of plebiscite, unveiled the neo-colonial ideology of the current Indian government and exposed the Indian mala fide intentions of demographic changes in the revocation of the special status of Indian Occupied Kashmir. These underlining realities will be discussed in an attempt to argue how current demographic changes have become the gravest challenge to the decolonization of Kashmir. Deliberate and illegal demographic changes in Kashmir, its impacts on the existing UN resolutions, perpetual increase in human rights violations and other possible challenges to the decolonization of Kashmir are the major areas that are addressed in this paper
USES AND GRATIFICATIONS THEORY AND DIGITAL MEDIA USE: THE TEST OF EMOTIONAL FACTORS
We study online digital media use by adoption uses and gratifications theory and technology acceptance model. With an online survey, we collected data from 73 college students who enrolled in an IT course and analyze the data by using stepwise multiple regressions and semi-structured analysis. Through principal component analysis and multiple regression analysis we identify major motivations of online newspaper use. The purpose of the analysis is to understand whether affective constructs--entertainment, perceived enjoyment, and perceived playfulness--are different. The results suggest that entertainment is the most important use motivation of digital media use. Interestingly, information motivation is not the most salient motivation, assumed to be the major reason for media use. From the results we can see that the motivation of digital media is different from traditional media. Along with the theorization of the technology acceptance model, we also identify that perceived enjoyment and entertainment motivation are different constructs. The structured relationship of motivations and use intention is also tested
LESSONS IN GRADE 11 MATHEMATICS USING GRAPHING CALCULATOR APPLICATIONS
Since mobile devices are becoming ubiquitous in today’s student generation and to replace bulky and costly handheld graphing calculators, this quasi-experimental study determined the effects of the lessons using graphing calculator applications in a Mathematics classroom. The study involved two intact classes of Grade 11 GAS students of San Jose National High School, Malilipot, Albay. The experimental group was taught lessons using graphing calculator applications with the integration of contextualized, inquiry-based, collaborative and interactive learning approaches. On the other hand, the control group received the same lessons but without the use of applications. The actual conduct of the lessons was video-recorded and observed by the teacher-observers to determine and analyze carefully the students’ notable behaviors. Further, the effects of the lessons in terms of students’ performance, mental effort, and interest were assessed by using teacher-made test, Paas Mental Effort Rating (PMER) scale, and Mathematics Interest Inventory, respectively. Students’ journal entries, teachers’ observation notes, and focus group discussions’ responses were used to triangulate the results. Qualitative and quantitative analyses showed that the lessons using graphing calculator applications supported student collaboration and facilitated better teacher-student interaction. It also allowed students to become comfortable when and how to use the applications, as well as making them active and participative during learning activities. It further enhanced students’ conceptual understanding and process skills, and increased their level of interest towards Mathematics. The use of the applications also afforded the minimizing of students’ extraneous cognitive load by investing lower mental effort in learning the lessons. To this extent, the use of graphing calculator applications in Mathematics lessons is needed for the betterment of learning the subject
CONTEXTUALIZED STRATEGIC INTERVENTION MATERIALS IN GRADE 9 MATHEMATICS
This pre-experimental study developed ten (10) Contextualized Strategic Intervention Materials (CSIMs) for the third quarter least mastered Grade 9 Mathematics competencies. The developed CSIMs were based on the generalized least mastered skills of a High School for SY 2015 – 2018. The three (3) least mastered skills were: prove theorems on the different kinds of parallelogram (rectangle, rhombus, square); solve problems involving parallelograms, trapezoids and kites; and solve problems that involve triangle similarity and right triangles. The CSIMs developed addressed the above-cited least mastered skills integrating features of: Bicol culture, use of language learning strategies, and awareness of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. Students’ significant learning experiences in, and the effect of CSIMs on students’ conceptual understanding were also tackled. Five (5) teachers each for the three features, using DepEd’s LRMDS for SIM, evaluated and rated the CSIMs very evident (at mean 4.73 of 5). Further, the CSIMs under each focus area were evaluated excellent (mean of 4.78 of 5). Students’ significant learning experiences were extracted from the students’ journal entries, teachers’ observation, and Focus Group Discussion responses. The significant learning experiences of Grade 9 students in using the CSIMs were: (a) gained new experiences and developed into independent learners, (b) learned effectively and found the topics easy to understand, (c) became more interested in learning Math topics, (d) appreciated problem solving, and (e) enjoyed and felt comfortable in learning Math topics using the CSIM. Students’ conceptual understanding improved and were significantly different (p < 0.05) for the formative and summative assessments. The set of Contextualized Strategic Intervention Materials (CSIMs) is recommended for: use to promote meaningful learning; further improved by considering other features and subject areas; replication to validate the reliability of the results and expand the learning experiences of students; and collaboration among teachers is encouraged for the development of CSIMs
SCHEMA- BROADENING INSTRUCTION IN GRADE 9 MATHEMATICS
This pre-experimental study is aimed to present the effects of using the Schema- Broadening Instruction (SBI) to the Mathematics performance of one Grade 9 class at a barangay high school in the Philippines. The study used a modified approach of SBI that adopted the use of the following visual and procedural schemes: (a) The Frayer Model; (b) Visual representations of variation equations; and (c) Polya’s Four Steps in Problem Solving. The modified approach of SBI has also incorporated the use of structured (for concept formation) and open inquiry-based (for problem solving) activities. The approach aimed to reduce the students’ cognitive load in learning Mathematics by introducing visual and procedural schemas. Schemas can be handled with very little conscious effort once acquired and automated. Hence, can reduce students’ working memory load (Ericson, 2005). Results from the study showed that the students gained a wonderful experience of learning through the modified approach of Schema-Broadening Instruction. The students also showed capabilities of learning through structured forms of activities were guide questions and steps were provided for them in generalizing the concepts of the topic. But the Grade 9 students showed unreadiness for open inquiry-based activities and were not yet capable of constructing their own procedure in problem solving. The students preferred to be guided towards the step by step solution instead. Data gathered also showed that the approach has improved the students’ conceptual understanding that lead all the students to mastery. The students’ performance under problem solving also showed improvements but was not enough for all the students to gain mastery. Future scope for the study would be to develop validated visual and procedural schemas that can further reduce cognitive overload in learning Mathematics
THE ROLE OF FAMILY AND SCHOOL IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION: AN INDONESIAN CASE
In the process of learning English, a learner constantly reshapes his/her identity as he/she goes through different learning experiences. A particular experience may be added as a new part to a learner’s perceived identity or replace another part of it. The present study examined how an Indonesian reconstructed her identity as an English language learner (ELL) as she went through various learning experiences since childhood to university level in two different countries. In-depth interview was conducted to collect the participant’s account on her experiences, followed by several online correspondences within two months after the interview was conducted. The results of this study indicated that parental support and school policy and environment played an important role in reshaping the participant’s identity. Her identity construction was then explained using Gee’s (2000) four perspectives of identity. This study extends the research on learner identity particularly in Indonesian context or any other contexts with nearly similar characteristics
ACTION RESEARCH ON STUDENTS' CREATIVE INVENTIONS IN VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Because the bicycle lacks lighting equipment, there is no indicator light when steering and braking, thus making it is easy to cause a rear vehicle collision and form a casualty, especially at night. In view of this, this study focused on the safety of bicycles at night, taking vocational high school students, using the existing equipment of the school, combined with relevant curriculum theory and practice, creative thinking and production of "Bicycle safety display device", the LED projection lamp installed in the back seat, with the back of the bicycle rider as the projection screen, can display the enlarged pattern of left and right turn and brake, so that the rear vehicle can be clearly identified to reduce the incidence of accidents. The conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)The study found that the production of the "Bicycle Safety Display Device" enhanced students' understanding and application of relevant courses; (2) The study found that the production of "Bicycle Safety Display Device" enhanced the student's circuit design and production capabilities; (3) Through participation in the project, the students generally came to believe that the production of the "Bicycle Safety Display Device" can unite the team's centripetal force and contribute greatly to the improvement of cooperative learning, and problem solving and innovative invention capabilities; (4) The finished product of this study is useful for the night driving safety of the bicycle
THE RISE OF CHINA: CASE STUDY BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE IN INDONESIA
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a grand strategy used by China to expand and strengthen its influence in the international sphere. In spreading BRI, China established strategic partnerships with middle and minor power countries through infrastructure development, such as the construction of an Asia-Europe silk train route, construction of an oil and gas pipeline through Central Asia-China, also a high-technology seaport in China and its destination countries. China also forming a Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for Asian countries named the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). China’s aggressiveness is increasingly visible through its one-sided effort on claiming the South China Sea. BRI has a long-term negative financial impact in the economic and trade sectors which could be seen in some African countries. However, BRI has a significant short-term impact, especially in improving the country's infrastructure sector and the development of national growth. In Indonesia, the BRI project has been approved by the government to become an alternative that supports Indonesia’s infrastructure development. BRI has been applied in Indonesia on railway construction and also power and steel industries. Furthermore, Indonesia is trying to stabilize the Asia-Pacific Region by setting its condition as the first move. This study will be analyzed using hegemonic stability theory and rational choice theory. The method used is a case study method related to the findings in this study aimed at analyzing the reasons and impacts of Indonesia choosing and establishing strategic partnerships with China amid the turmoil of the Chinese and American trade wars. Indonesia's choice of establishing strategic partnerships with China could appear as a security dilemma that Indonesia faces regarding the Asia-Pacific regional stability
THE QUALITY OF WORK LIFE IN MIGRANT WORKERS IN THAILAND: A CASE STUDY OF SRI-KHEMA MARKET, BANGSUE DISTRICT, BANGKOK
The objective of this study 1) study the level of quality of work-life in migrant workers 2) compare the level of quality of work-life in migrant workers differentiated by personal factors. The research uses a quantitative method to study 232 participants in Sri-khema Market in Bangsue district of Bangkok. It used surveys for data collection. Statistical analysis was done using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. If the overall ANOVA resulted in a P value less than 0.05, the Least Significant Method would be used to produce a pairwise comparison. The result found; 1. The level of quality of life overall is at a high level with a mean of 3.60. Once studied by aspect, it was found that ‘work benefiting the society’ was rated the highest at 4.17, followed by ‘fair wages’ at 4.16 and ‘safe and healthy working condition’ at 4.09 consecutively. 2. The comparison of the level of quality of life in migrant workers in Sri-khema differentiated by personal factors found: gender, marital status, education level, and income level do not induce a different level of quality of life whereas age, nationality and length of employment induce differences in the levels of quality of life
A STUDY ON THE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ SPATIAL ABILITY AND MATHEMATICS PROBLEM SOLVING IN MOJOKERTO
The aim of this study was to investigate the spatial ability the relation of spatial ability and geometrical problem-solving ability of junior high school students in Mojokerto, Indonesia. Data in this descriptive study was collected using The Purdue Spatial Visualization Test (PSVT). PSVT was used to analyze students’ rotation spatial skills element then categorized into three different spatial ability groups (High, Intermediate, and Low). The mathematics problem-solving data were collected by giving mathematical ability written test to the students. Results showed that more than 70% of participants possessed intermediate level both in spatial and problem-solving ability. Furthermore, the statistics result indicated a positive correlation between spatial ability and geometrical problem-solving ability. Qualitative analysis revealed that students had difficulty in solving the problem of spatial rotation especially students in low-level ability. Finally, significant evident recommend spatial ability need to be considered involved in the learning activity
