Depression Secondary to Isotretinoin – a Case Report

    Get PDF
Depression is one of the leading causes of morbidity in the world and significantly affects the lives of people suffering from it. The exact cause of depression has not been established and it is believed to be a complex play between various social, biological, environmental, personal factors. A relatively rare but distinct cause includes pharmacological agents. In this case report, we describe the case of a 17-year-old girl who developed depression with psychotic symptoms on two occasions, both preceded by a history of Isotretinoin use. She was admitted and treated with anti-psychotics and psychotherapy with significant improvement in her mental state. There is no global consensus and direct scientific evidence establishing causality but many case reports are present in medical literature showing association between depression and Isotretinoin use. Therefore, it is important for clinicians to exercise caution when prescribing Isotretinoin to vulnerable groups

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND Menstrual knowledge, hygiene, and perception are often neglected worldwide, especially in smaller and less developed societies, exposing adolescents to menstrual health hazards. Against the poor communication of menstrual health and hygiene, the present paper attempts to assess the attitude, knowledge, and perceptions towards menstruation among Poumai adolescents of Manipur, Northeast India. METHODS It is a cross-sectional study with data collected from 491 Poumai adolescents through a cross-sectional study using a self-structured schedule on menstrual knowledge. RESULTS The mean age of the respondents was 17.11±1.33 years. 73.12% of adolescents did not know about menstruation before attaining menarche. Most of the adolescents learned about menstruation from their mothers (39.39%), followed by sisters (29.55%), friends (28.79%), and aunts (2.27%), respectively. The study exhibits a significant relationship between age, educational qualification, and advanced knowledge about menstruation before menarche and attitude and perception towards menstruation

Aim: Present study was aimed to analyze difference of hematological parameters and blood urea level between Recovered and Dead cases of COVID-19. Material & Methods: A hospital based study was undertaken wherein hematological parameters and blood urea level of 65 cases were analyzed. Results: Recovered patients, 16 (42.1%) showed higher levels of neutrophils with corresponding 22 (57.9%) patients showing normal level of lymphocytes, 25 (65.7%) with normal hemoglobin and 35 (92%) with normal blood urea. On other hand, among 27 Died cases, 26 (96.2%) showed higher counts of neutrophils, 1 patient showed normal lymphocytes (3.8%) and 26 (96.2%) with low count of lymphocytes. Conclusion: In majority of cases, recovered patients showed normal range of lymphocytes (20-45%), hemoglobin and blood urea levels, whereas mortality was observed associated with deficiency of lymphocytes (except one patient all belo

HIGH-VELOCITY FRACTURE: CASE OF DISPLACED INTERTROCHANTERIC FRACTURE OFFEMUR WITH SPIRAL FRACTURE OF SHAFT OF RIGHT FEMUR

BACKGROUND Intertrochanteric fracture is a common orthopedic condition characterized by extracapsular fractures of the proximal femur that occur between the greater and lesser trochanter with predominance in elderly population, especially those with osteoporosis, wherein even a low energy mechanism is enough to cause the fracture. There is an observed female predominance with ratio between 2:1 and 8:1. [1,2] Commonly observed symptoms include shortened and externally rotated limb, pain and bony tenderness around the hip joint, inability to bear weight on the affected limb to name a few. Management depends upon age of patient, nature of the fracture, number of comminuted fragments and blood loss. Treatment for intertrochanteric fractures includes conservative management using Thomas splint application and immobilization after reduction of fracture. In case the fracture is displaced then there is a need for surgical reduction and internal fixation using dynamic hip screw, proximal femoral nail or gamma nails. CASE DESCRIPTION A 27-year-old male patient presented to the emergency department of JSS hospital with alleged history of road traffic accident with inability to bear weight on the right lower limb, bony tenderness and crepitus over right hip joint and over right thigh which was confirmed to be intertrochanteric fracture and spiral fracture of shaft of femur on radiographic imaging. CONCLUSION This case report presents the mechanism of injury which is high energy mechanism leading to intertrochanteric fracture in young individual and its management

Use of integrated clinical scenarios in neuroanatomy laboratory sessions a strategy to foster students’ learning

    Get PDF
Objective: Combinations of various teaching strategies have been employed to enhance neuroanatomy teaching, to little success. Herein, we describe the use of integrated clinical scenarios in anatomy laboratory sessions as an educational strategy to improve the learning process for students undertaking neuroscience course. Methods: We assessed the perception and performance of students who utilised the integrated clinical resources in the neuroanatomy labs. We also compared the performance of the students on their neuroscience course with the performance of the previous year\u27s students (who did not use the clinical scenarios). Results: A total of (130) 88% of the registered student both male and female participated by filling out a questionnaire. A majority (80%) of students supported introducing clinical cases at this early stage and agreed that cases covered learning objectives well. Students (81%) preferred a decreased faculty participation and 68% strongly agreed that cases were well integrated with other disciplines and assisted critical thinking and conceptual understanding. Most of them (90%) approved using plastic models and pictures as resource-material. The average mark obtained for all block together between the two cohorts did not differ significantly, while student performance was significantly improved in neuroscience block of the cohort which had access to the integrated clinical scenarios. Conclusions: Collectively, or specifically designed neuroanatomy lab sessions provided students with an empowering experience to help them apply critical thinking and use their basic neuroscience knowledge to solve clinical problems

Nutrient Adequacy Among Pregnant Women With Altered Iodine Status

    Get PDF
Background: Pregnant women, are one of the most vulnerable groups for iodine deficiency. Alteration in the nutritional status during pregnancy can have a significant impact on maternofoetal health outcomes. Evidence relating to macro and micronutrient requirements, their deficiency its risks, and consequences still remain a gap of knowledge. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the nutrient intake of pregnant women with altered iodine status in the Mysuru region. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted and random spot urine samples (n=110) were collected to determine Urinary iodine concentration (UIC). Three-day 24hr recall and FFQ were collected to assess the nutrient intake. Adequacy percent and ratio was calculated for both macro and micronutrients and ANOVA was employed to find the significance among different groups. Results: Intake of both macro and micronutrients were insufficient in UIC\u3c150μg/L and UIC\u3e500μg/L groups except for carbohydrate. A significant difference (

Misinterpreted Orthodontic Procedure leading on to depression

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Oral health is an important issue that affects not only the teeth and mouth but also general health, appearance, and self-esteem. Risk of having infections including poor oral health and periodontal infections are the most proposed mechanisms of action of depression and anxiety on the human body by modification of the immune system function and increasing pro-inflammatory cytokines and induction of vascular inflammation. It is proposed that these two conditions can cause oral and dental problems since emotional changes can influence oral mucosa. Several researches have also shown a relationship between anxiety or depression and periodontal health. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 24-year-old female with multiple episodes of depression and anxiety due to anticipated pain of dental procedures and myths about dentures. CONCLUSIONS: This case report emphasizes on the need for interaction between psychiatry and dental sciences. Assessing possible evolution of psychiatric conditions in people undergoing dental procedures and assessing oral health in psychiatric patients
