Nutritional and Health Benefits of Singhara – A Review Article.
Trapa Natans commonly known as Singhara or Paniphal in India. It grows throughout the East of India. Dried water chestnuts can be ground into flour to make a kind of porridge. Young nuts can be eaten raw with its greenish skin removed. The Singhara shell and core are rich in starch, dietary fiber, essential amino acids, certain types of phenols and minerals and have demonstrated various biological activities, including anticancer and antioxidant properties. Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI): Applications in Health Care
GeoAI is a new emerging research area that refers to set of technologies that integrate AI technology with a diversity of GIS (Geographic Information System) techniques. The present study observed that GeoAI goes beyond current GIS expectations and into the domain of possibility in the not-too-distant future. This emerging interdisciplinary science will lead us to sustainable decisions and explore the most suitable solutions to the existing problems. GeoAI has the potential to transform current geography and geomatics programs by incorporating a GeoAI dimension into modern GIS curricula. In this review, we have studied the application GeoAI in various healthcare fields. GeoAI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare, public health, infectious disease control, disaster aid, and the achievements of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). in healthcare, GeoAI can help with disease diagnosis, treatment planning, and resource allocation. In public health, it can aid in disease surveillance, emergency response planning, and identifying health disparities. In infectious disease control, GeoAI can help predict and track disease outbreaks and support vaccination campaigns. In disaster aid, GeoAI can provide real time data on environmental hazards and their impact on public health. In achieving Sustainable Development Goals, it can support in land use planning, urban development, and resource allocation to promote health and environmental sustainability. Overall GeoAI has the potential to transform multiple sectors and improve the well-being of populations worldwide
Watermelon seed extract inhibits protein aggregation and formation of advanced glycation end-products
BACKGROUND: Glycation of proteins is a key element in the onset of diabetes consequences. The potential of medicinal plants to inhibit the progression of glycation complications provides a significant opportunity as an alternative therapy. METHODS: The effect of watermelon seed extract (WMSE) on antioxidant capacity was assessed based on radical scavenging activity and metal chelation activity. Further the inhibition of Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) formation was assessed by using different sources of amine (haemoglobin, bovine serum albumin, G.K peptide) and sugar sources (δ-gluconolactone, methylglyoxal, ribose). Aminoguanidine (AG) used as standard drug. RESULTS: Due to the presence of various phytochemicals that could disrupt the chain of events and prevent the development of AGEs, WMSE demonstrated its potential inhibitory effects at every step of protein glycation. A key part of this response is the scavenging of free radicals produced by glycation. CONCLUSION: The WMSE may aid to give a protective effect against protein degradation caused by hyperglycemia, which may be helpful in the treatment of problems associated with diabetes
Rational use of blood and blood components in a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Crossectional study.
Abstract:
Introduction: Blood transfusion is a life saving process and a complex phenomenon. Judicial use of blood and its components is the need of the hour. Objectives: The present study was planned with the objective to assess the appropriateness of blood transfusions in patients admitted in the hospital as per WHO guidelines. Materials and Methods: A crossectional study was conducted at tertiary care hospital for a period of one and a half years. Records of patients from blood bank were evaluated to collect data. MS Excel was used to enter the data and IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows (version 20.0) was used to analyse the data.
Results: Overall prevalence rate of appropriate use of blood component is 62.63%. Conclusions: Retrospective audits are effective tool to increase rational use of blood by identifying areas requiring intervention to change transfusion practic
Lady Windermere Syndrome; Rare Pulmonary Infection Secondary To Voluntary Suppression Of Cough.
65-year-old lady suffering from cough for the last one month with white colored scanty sputum. Past three weeks she has developed wheeze with shortness of breath. She also complains of on and off mid fever for last two weeks with evening raise of temperature. No evidence of chest pain or hemoptysis. No past history of pulmonary tuberculosis or allergic airway disease. Non diabetic and non-hypertensive.
General physical examination was normal. On auscultation there was reduced air entry with crackles in the right mid and lower zones. Rest of the systems was normal

Influence of mastication and its relationship with Body Mass Index before and after prosthetic rehabilitation in partially edentulous patients
BACKGROUND: The main purpose of prosthetic rehabilitation is to enhance the masticatory function by replacing the missing teeth with an artificial substitute, which improves nutrient-rich food intake. There are recent studies which indicate the influence of chewing behavior and energy intake, but little is known about the relationship between chewing on nutritional status. OBJECTIVE: This study intended to assess the changes in masticatory efficiency before and after prosthetic rehabilitation and its influence on nutritional status and body weight. METHODS: A total of 40 partially edentulous subjects aged between 45- 65 years were recruited. Body Mass Index was determined by measuring body weight using a medical grade weighing scale. Height was measured using wall mounted stature meter and Waist circumference was measured with an anthropometric measure tape. Masticatory efficiency was determined using the sieve method with peanuts as test food at baseline, at 3 and 6 months of prosthetic rehabilitation with a removable partial denture. RESULTS: Sieve test performed for evaluating masticatory efficiency showed an increase in the percentage of smaller particles by 28.3% in non-obese and 32.15% in the obese group. The obese/overweight group showed a decrease in BMI values and non-obese subjects showed no significant change in BMI.
CONCLUSION: The study concluded that improving masticatory efficiency by prosthodontic rehabilitation can aid in normalizing the nutritional status in certain partially edentulous non-obese and obese individuals
Relationship Between Femoral Artery Intima-Media Thickness And Atherosclerosis In Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease- A One Year Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study
Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. CKD and Peripheral arterial disease both independently increase the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality. There is limited data about the co-relation between ultrasound measures of the femoral artery in peripheral vascular disease (PVD) & renal functional status. This research hence will help us in the establishment of a relationship between femoral intima-media thickness (fIMT) with CKD. Also, IMT assessment might help in earlier detection of atherosclerotic plaques & hence PVD.
Materials and methods: A cross sectional study was conducted for 1 year in a tertiary care hospital. 99 CKD patients with no history of smoking & hypertension were enrolled, who underwent femoral Doppler ultrasonography. The findings of ultrasonography were analysed. Descriptive analysis was carried out for the quantitative data.
Results: The mean age was 52.42 ±15.95years, mean femoral intima media thickness (fIMT) was 0.08± 0.02cm and mean estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 17.44±15.44ml/min/1.73m2. In this study men were more commonly affected, most vulnerable age being \u3e60 years. Out of 99 subjects, 69 had raised IMT and 30 patients had normal IMT. Prevalence of atherosclerosis in the given study group was found to be 69.70 %. Higher prevalence of raised IMT among diabetics (75.0%) was present. Not all CKD groups had significant co-relation with IMT.
Conclusion: Prevalence of atherosclerosis was high in CKD population, more common in men and in the older age group. None of the CKD Stages had any significant co-relation with PVD. Femoral artery plaques identified by ultrasound are independently associated with lower eGFR. Femoral artery doppler ultrasonography will be a promising tool for identifying atherosclerosis in kidney disease in its earlier course
Effect Of Fenugreek And Curry Leaves Powder On Dyslipidemia- A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study
Background: Dyslipidemias, a disorder of lipid metabolism, is widely established as an independent major and modifiable risk factor of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The conditions are common worldwide and a leading cause of death in India, and has even riven the age bar swaying in young people too. The significant effect of an increase in dyslipidemias depends on diabetes and hypertension. Nutraceuticals, derived from food sources serve as an alternative therapy for the management of dyslipidemia. India is home to multitudinous medicinal plants, of which many remain underutilized. Murraya Koenigii (curry leaf) and Trigonella foenum-graecum (fenugreek leaves) are well-proven as good sources of nutraceutical and functional foods. Objectives: To study the effect of fenugreek and curry leaves powder on dyslipidemia and also the dietary habits of dyslipidemic subjects. Materials and Methods: 31 subjects aged between 40-70 years were recruited based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and grouped into group 1(hypertensive with dyslipidemia), group 2 (diabetic with dyslipidemia), and group 3 (only dyslipidemia) supplemented with the mixture of fenugreek and curry leaf powder for 3 months. Results: Reduction in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were observed in group 2 (DM+DLP) and group 1 (HTN+DLP) i.e 221.2±29 and 193±72.4 respectively. The HDL levels increased in all three groups. Reduced VLDL and FBS levels were observed in all three groups. Conclusion: Our findings showed that fenugreek and curry leaf powder supplementation, as a phenolic-rich herb can be effective in the reduction of some lipid profiles in dyslipidemic patients suggesting their potential neutraceutical role in treating CVD
