Toimeentulo, velka, vastikkeellisuus: Huumeita käyttävien asunnottomien nuorten siteet yhteiskuntaan ja sen marginaaleihin
No full textThis article examines the marginalisation of young people and the challenges of moving from the margins to social inclusion from an economic and exchange perspective. Our analysis is based on ethnography and interviews conducted among homeless young people suffering from substance dependency, with the analysis focusing especially on their subsistence and indebtedness as well as on the marginalising mechanisms of the reciprocity in drug use subcultures. The interconnected issues of economy, exchange and belonging to the community make visible the hierarchies of social ties, which in our analysis are reflected in weak social solidarity and the entrenchment of marginal positions. The situation of young people highlights the problems of inclusion and solidarity. The contradictions of the desire and the practice of keeping on the inside collide and the borderline between marginality and exclusion becomes problematised. An examination of young people's subsistence, debt and relations of exchange reveals how economy, exchange and social reality become intertwined to create a second-class citizenship. In the light of the young people's experiences, the thresholds for social inclusion, which have been seen as an integral part of the welfare state project, appear extremely high.Tarkastelemme artikkelissa nuorten marginaaliin ajautumista ja marginaalista yhteiskunnalliseen osallisuuteen siirtymisen haasteellisuutta talouden sekä vaihtosuhteiden näkökulmasta. Aineistonamme on asunnottomien huumeriippuvuudesta kärsivien nuorten parissa toteutettu etnografia ja haastattelut, joiden kautta analyysimme keskittyy nuorten toimeentuloon ja velkaantumiseen sekä huumeiden käytön alakulttuurien vastikkeellisen vaihdon marginalisoiviin mekanismeihin. Talouden, vaihdon ja yhteisöön kuulumisen yhteen punoutuminen tekee näkyväksi sosiaalisen siteen hierarkioita, jotka analyysissamme näkyvät heikkona yhteiskunnallisena solidaarisuutena ja marginaalisen position vakiintumisena. Nuorten tilanne tuo esiin rajankäyntiä marginaalisuuden ja ulkopuolisuuden välillä. Nuorten toimeentulon, velkaantumisen ja vastikkeellisten suhteiden tarkastelu tuo esiin, miten talous, vaihto ja sosiaalinen todellisuus limittyvät toisiinsa synnyttäen toisen luokan kansalaisuutta. Yhteiskuntaan kuulumisen kynnykset, joiden matalana pitäminen on nähty elimellisenä osana hyvinvointivaltion projektia, näyttävät nuorten kokemusten valossa korkeilta
Preaching With the Fathers: The Example of the Old Church Slavonic Učitelno Evangelie (Didactic Gospel) by Constantine of Preslav
No full textThe article examines the question of the usage of patristic exegetical texts in the composition of homilies, focusing on one historical examples, the so-called Učitelno Evangelie (Didactic Gospel). This is a corpus of fifty-one Slavonic exegetical homilies composed by Constantine of Preslav in late-ninth-century Bulgaria. They were written on the basis of excerpts from patristic biblical commentaries included in Greek New Testament catenae manuscripts, which were translated by Constantine of Preslav from Greek into Old Church Slavonic. No full textSuomalaisen oikeusjärjestyksen syvärakenteen osana on kansalliskielten, suomen ja ruotsin, yhtäläinen vahva asema kaikessa julkisessa toiminnassa. Yliopistoilla ja niissä tehtävällä tutkimuksella on keskeinen vaikutus kielten kehitykseen ja elinvoimaan. Kielipolitiikan tutkimuksessa on havaittu, että englannin kieli on alkanut syrjäyttää kansalliskieliä tutkimuksen ja ylimmän opetuksen kentällä. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan Suomen yliopistojen kielisääntelyä lainopillisesta näkökulmasta. Kyseinen sääntely on viitteellistä, epäyhtenäistä ja jättää tulkinnallista tilaa yliopistojen itsehallinnolle. Vaikuttaisi siltä, ettei yliopistojen kielisääntelyn kokonaisuus ei enää turvaa kansalliskielten, suomen ja ruotsin, asemaa ylimmässä opetuksessa ja tutkimuksessa, eikä myöskään huomioi vähemmistökieliä riittävästi
“Attuned to Loss”: Rhetoric of Solastalgia in Richard Powers’ Bewilderment and Emmi Itäranta’s The Moonday Letters
No full textThis article analyzes two contemporary novels that reflect on the devastation of the Earth: Bewilderment by American author Richard Powers (2021) and The Moonday Letters (2020) by Finnish author Emmi Itäranta, arguing that both novels invite readers to engage with solastalgia – a distress caused by witnessing environmental changes. The evocation of solastalgia (as an environmentally-attuning readerly affect) is discussed by employing James Phelan’s rhetorical theory of narrative, particularly his and Matthew Clark’s model of three narrative components. Accounting for both content and form, the threefold analysis touches on the many similarities of the seemingly different novels: their Earth-centeredness, the theme of loss and how it is rescaled from personal to environmental, as well as storyworld-internal worldbuilding that repeatedly interrupts the progression of narratives. This reading contributes to discussions about the functioning and functions of fiction in the Anthropocene
