    Get PDF
The present study is the most comprehensive representation of lectin binding sites in various structural components of the lingual tonsil of six adult healthy buffaloes. The study was useful in determining the specific binding affinities of sixteen lectins of the N-acetylglucosamine group, i.e., Triticum vulgaris (WGA), succinylated Triticum vulgaris (s-WGA), Lycopersicon esculentum (LEL), Datura stramonium (DSL), Solanum tuberosum (STL); N-acetylgalactosamine group, i.e., Glycine max (SBA), Dolichos biflorus (DBA), Ricinus communis (RCA), Vicia villosa agglutinin (VVL); galactose group i. e Griffonia simplicifolia isolectin B4 (GS1B4), Arachis hypogaea (PNA), Artocarpus integrifolia (Jacalin), Erythrina crisa-galli (ECL); and glucose/mannose group i.e. Canavalia ensiformis (Con A), Lens culinaris agglutinin (LCA), Pisum sativum agglutinin (PSA) at structures of the lingual tonsil. The stratum spinosum of stratified squamous epithelium and modified reticular epithelium was strongly demarcated by lectins of the N-acetylglucosamine group. In addition, VVL, jacalin, and Con A lectins also showed strong responses for the same layer. The RCA, PNA, Con A, and PSA were the best markers for the collagen fibers of the subepithelial connective tissue. The lymphoid cells of the inter- and parafollicular region possessed receptors for ECL, WGA, and Con A. In contrast, the germinal center B cells were labeled only by the lectins of the glucose/mannose group. The mucosal secretions and the endothelium of the blood vessels were predominantly composed of glucosamine, sialic acid, and galactosamine sugars. The characteristic localization of lectins suggests the presence of specific receptor sites that may be useful for studying early disease pathogenesis and developing oral vaccines. In addition, the study will provide a database for comparing histochemical changes in different disease states

Drug addiction is a current global problem, which causes significant damage to the individual and society as a whole. Drug addicts have numerous disorders, among which the emotional sphere occupies an important place. Identification of social and psychological factors affecting the development of emotional intelligence of drug addicts will make it possible to optimize their psychological rehabilitation programmes. The aim of the study is based on establishing the influence of social and psychological factors on the development of the emotional intelligence level in drug addicts. Methods: The research programme uses standardized psychometric diagnostic methods (MSPSS, Self-Monitoring Scale, EQ-test, Self-esteem test). Descriptive statistics, the Kruskal-Wallace H test, and Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient were used. The Results: The study showed that a low level of emotional intelligence prevails among the surveyed drug addicts (M=37.63±13.38). At the same time, people with a low level have pronounced signs of low social self-control (Н=67.64, р≤0.001), social support (Н=67.76, р≤0.001), and self-esteem (Н=89.12, р≤0.001). Correlation analysis revealed a close direct relationship between emotional intelligence and social self-control (r=0.681, p≤0.001), social support (r=0.632, p≤0.001), and self-esteem (r=0.726, p≤0.001). Conclusions: The study found that the development of emotional intelligence of drug addicts is influenced by such social and psychological factors as social self-control, social support, and self-esteem. These factors determine the ability to manage emotions, adequately perceive them and objectively express them. Prospects: The identified results can be used when building a system of psychological rehabilitation for persons with drug addiction. In particular, to develop emotional intelligence, and improving general emotional well-being

    Get PDF
Background: Ultrasound scanning is a non-invasive technique for evaluating animals based on carcass yield and meat quality traits. It has been incorporated into the beef cattle breeding program. However, little has been done in buffaloes. Thus, this study was conducted to estimate the genetic parameters for growth traits- body weights (BW) and a real-time ultrasound scan of eye muscle area (EMA) and rib fat (RF) to determine their suitability as a tool for selection. Methods: Four hundred thirty-eight (438) male Philippine riverine buffaloes with 1,535 BW records and 417 real-time ultrasound scans of EMA and RF scans at the 12th rib were available for the study. BW was taken and adjusted at birth, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months while RF and EMA scans were taken at 12 & 18 mos. Genetic parameters were estimated with a pedigree-based multi-trait animal model using ASREML software. Results: The average BW of buffaloes adjusted to 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months of age were 135kg, 230.8kg, 323.0kg, 382.7, 453.6, and 502.4kg, respectively. The mean EMA and RF at 12 months were 29.7 cm2 and 3.2mm, respectively. Direct genetic heritabilities were 0.26±0.16, 0.29±0.12, 0.35±0.19 and 0.67±0.32 for birth, BW12mos, EMA12mos and RF12mos, respectively. Maternal genetic heritability for birth weight. was 0.12±0.09. Genetic correlations among traits were positive except between birth and RF. Conclusions: Results indicate that ultrasound scanning can be used for selection together with BW at 12mos. and suggest that early performance is an excellent predictor of performance at a later age

Introduction: Dysmenorrhea is a prevalent gynecological disorder that is characterized by the presence of unpleasant menstrual cramps. This condition has been found to have significant medical, psychological, and social implications for individuals who experience it. Although commonly seen as an inherent characteristic of a properly functioning reproductive system, it can potentially operate as a diagnostic tool for underlying illnesses. Regrettably, dialogues pertaining to dysmenorrhea are sometimes prohibited, particularly among males, within diverse cultural contexts. Objective: The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the level of knowledge and attitudes among allied health professions students enrolled at various universities of West Bengal (WB), India with regard to dysmenorrhea. This study aims to examine the impact of cultural variables on the knowledge and communication surrounding dysmenorrhea, specifically within conservative Indian districts. Methods: The study sample consisted of 494 students enrolled in allied health professions faculties at different universities of WB. Data collection took place from September 2021 to February 2023. A meticulously designed survey was employed to gather data pertaining to the various sources of knowledge, levels of awareness, attitudes toward discussing dysmenorrhea, and willingness to engage in conversations about menstruation with prospective females. Data interpretation involved the utilization of statistical analysis techniques, such as descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. Results: In terms of demographic composition, the study consisted of 86% female participants and 14% male participants. The mean knowledge scores of females (14.41 ± 3.14) were found to be considerably higher compared to males (13.75 ± 4.56). The primary sources of information were the internet (58.3%), maternity figures (48.8%), and educational institutions (46.2%). An observed positive connection (r = 0.244) was found between age and knowledge levels. The participants exhibited a general hesitancy to openly engage in conversations on menstrual symptoms, however, they demonstrated a readiness to engage in discussions about menstruation with their prospective daughters. Conclusions: The present study brings attention to the gender discrepancies in knowledge levels pertaining to dysmenorrhea among allied health professions university students of WB. Additionally, it emphasizes the influence of cultural norms on knowledge acquisition and communication around this topic. The statement underscores the need for destigmatization initiatives, comprehensive teaching on menstruation health, and fostering open communication within academic institutions and the broader community. The aforementioned findings offer valuable insights that can inform future educational endeavors and healthcare procedures within this particular subject

    Get PDF
The study investigated the effect of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and melodic intonation therapy (MIT) on the verbal communication skills of persons with apraxia. A pre-test, post-test, and control group quasi-experimental research design was used with a sample of persons with post-stroke apraxia receiving speech and language therapeutic services in Ibadan Metropolis. University College Hospital was selected as the treatment center for the study. Thirty persons with apraxia were purposively selected and assigned to one of three groups: CBT, melodic intonation therapy, or control (N = 30, male = 16, female = 14, mean age = 63.1 years). Twenty-four sessions of CBT and melodic intonation therapy classes were held with the experimental group only. The control group was exposed to placebo treatment over the same period. An apraxia of speech rating scale (ASRS) was administered to assess the verbal communication skills of the prospective participants. Those who met the inclusion criteria were selected for the study. The instruments used were the ASRS, the English proficiency test of oral communication skill rating scale, and two self-developed therapeutic plans. Data were analysed using analyses of covariance and Scheffe’s post-hoc test at a 0.05 level of significance. There was a significant main effect of treatment (CBT and MIT) on the verbal communication skills of the participants (F (2,11) = 200.84, P < 0.05, X = 0.56). Participants in the MIT group had the highest mean score (56.20), followed by those in CBT (37.90), while those in the control group had the lowest mean score (23.80). CBT and MIT were effective in enhancing the verbal communication skills of persons with apraxia. However, MIT showed better outcomes than CBT. Therefore, it is appropriate for speech therapists, pathologists, and other relevant practitioners to adopt these strategies to improve the verbal communication skills of those with apraxia
