Objective: This study aims to assess the effect of website media and surveillance on risk behaviors to prevent premarital sex and sexual violence among high school adolescents in Gorontalo Regency. Materials and Methods: Quasi-experimental research with non-equivalent control group design. Involving 158 adolescent students who were divided into two, namely the intervention group was given education through the Si Waspada Diri website media and the control group was given G'sites, both of which contained material modified from the Comprehensive Sexuality and Reproductive Health Education (CSHE) guidelines. The sampling technique was proportional systematic random sampling with sample criteria aged 15-18 years who were already dating. The research instrument was a knowledge, attitude and practice questionnaire that had previously been tested for validity and reliability Results: Knowledge, attitudes and practices of preventing premarital sex and sexual violence were significantly better using the Si Waspada Diri website and G'Sites. With a p value of less than 0.005, the mean difference after education showed that using the website was more beneficial than using G'Sites in terms of knowledge and attitude. In addition, for practices, p = 1.000 showed no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education materials such as Si Waspada Diri websites and G'sites help lower teenage sexual behavior practices, promote good attitudes, and raise awareness. Nonetheless, G'sites are less successful than websites in raising awareness and attitudes

Immigrants from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) are the largest ethnic unit to have arrived in Israel and, as such, have had a major impact on Israeli society in cultural, social and demographic terms. The manner in which the immigrants were absorbed in social institutions influenced the adaptation strategies they adopted, which changed over time. The research is aimed at examining the extent to which the immigrants have, according to their perception, adapted to the social frameworks, based on their experiences in connecting with the local population through the educational system and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The research is a qualitative one, in the framework of which interviews were conducted with 28 immigrants who had immigrated to Israel as children and adolescents. The immigrants developed adaptation strategies which changed as they transitioned from the educational system to the military framework, and subsequently settled into civilian life

    Get PDF
Introduction: This research provides an in-depth comparative analysis of parenting styles and their associated communication patterns in Malaysia, Taiwan, and the Chinese mainland. It also explores how they affect children's well-being through social and emotional development. The study examined the evolving parenting styles in four areas: language and verbal communication, non-verbal communication, gender roles and gendered communities, and family communication. Methods: A comprehensive literature search focused on journal articles published between 2018 and 2023. The scientific databases employed for this search encompassed reputable platforms such as Web of Science (WOS), Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Results: In the language and verbal communication domain, this research offers insights into how parents utilize language as a tool for discipline and emotional expression, indicating a gradual transition in communication styles from authoritarian to democratic. Non-verbal communication sheds light on the nuanced yet impactful ways emotions and norms are conveyed, encompassing eye contact and body gestures. Gender roles and gendered communities unveil a shift in perspectives from traditional to more egalitarian. As these countries or regions progress socially and economically, a transformation in the perception and implementation of gender roles is observed, influencing parenting strategies and children's self-concept. This paper amalgamates these aspects within the realm of family communication to underscore the growing influence of mutual communication and open dialogue in enriching parent-child relationships. Conclusion: The paper concludes that parenting styles are evolving with changing social norms, indicating the adaptability and responsiveness of parents to dynamic social dynamics, ultimately proving advantageous to children's development

    No full text
Background: Previous studies have highlighted the significant morbidity associated with para-pneumonic effusions in pediatric populations. However, comprehensive data on the prevalence and associated factors in children remain limited, particularly in tertiary care settings. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted over a three-year period at a single tertiary hospital. Medical records of pediatric patients diagnosed with pneumonia were reviewed to identify cases of para-pneumonic effusion. The study analyzed demographic data, clinical presentations, laboratory findings, and management approaches to determine factors associated with the development of para-pneumonic effusions. Results: 150 patients were identified with para-pneumonic effusions. The majority of patients with effusions were male (60%) and under five years of age (70%). Factors significantly associated with the development of effusions included the presence of comorbidities (p<0.01), higher CRP levels (p<0.05), and hospital-acquired pneumonia (p<0.001). The length of hospital stay was notably longer in patients with effusions than those without (p<0.001). Conclusion: The study found a considerable prevalence of para-pneumonic effusions among children with pneumonia in a tertiary hospital setting. Notably, associated factors were underlying comorbidities, elevated inflammatory markers, and hospital-acquired infections. These findings underscore the need for heightened surveillance and tailored management strategies in high-risk pediatric populations to mitigate the impact of effusions

Modernization Theory Revised: Testing the Relationship between Inward Foreign Direct Investment and Homicide

    Get PDF
Purpose: Modernization theory suggests that economic development is temporarily disruptive to social life and can lead to crimes of violence such as homicide. However, few studies have considered how the modernization process works. Specifically, they neglected the role of globalization. Previous research has suggested that certain measures of globalization may be theoretically linked to homicide. This study examines how inward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), a key component of globalization and economic development, is associated with cross-national homicide rates. Methods: Data from 101 countries were collected and analyzed to examine the relationship between inward FDI and homicide. Indirect effects of inward FDI on homicide through urbanization and economic growth were also examined. Results: The results show that inward foreign direct investment increases cross-national homicide rates, both directly and indirectly through increased urbanization. Conclusion: While economic development benefits society, the concomitant, deleterious effects should be considered by policymakers, especially those seeking inward foreign direct investment in their countries. Future researchers will want to consider examining other measures of globalization

Background: This study investigates the risk factors faced by parents of children with Severe Intellectual Disabilities. Methods: This study used a phenomenological research design within a qualitative research approach. Six parents of children diagnosed with Severe Intellectual Disability at Learners with Special Educational Needs schools were purposively selected to participate in this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and a focus group. Thematic data analysis was used to analyze data. Results: The findings of this study revealed that parents of children with Severe Intellectual Disabilities faced risks that exacerbated negative outcomes. Psychological distress, social exclusion and isolation, financial burdens, and lack of access to formal education were risk factors that hindered their ability to care for and support their children. Conclusions: Based on these findings, the study concluded that parents need access to multidisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals to support them in combatting the risk factors they face

Ventricular Dysfunction Secondary to Refeeding Syndrome in an Infant, A Case Report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Refeeding syndrome is a complex of signs and symptoms that occur following the abrupt initiation of enteral or parenteral nutrition in malnourished patients, among other causes. Most data focuses on adolescents and adults, with limited neonatal information and other pediatric group ages. This case presents an infant who developed ventricular dysfunction due to refeeding syndrome following starvation. Case Report: A 5-month-old female with a one-month history of generalized maculopapular rash and lower limb edema. Physical examination revealed severe malnutrition and significant electrolyte imbalances. The initial echocardiogram was unremarkable. Despite nutritional and dermatological management, the patient developed respiratory distress, generalized edema, and anuria, necessitating Pediatric Intensive Care Unit admission. Subsequent echocardiograms revealed dilated cardiomyopathy with systolic-diastolic dysfunction. After receiving inodilator therapy and diuretics, her condition temporarily improved but deteriorated again, requiring further intensive care. Imaging ruled out significant structural heart disease, and after a prolonged hospital stay, the patient was eventually stabilized and discharged with gradual nutritional and growth improvement. Discussion: Cardiac complications following refeeding have been reported primarily in older patients with comorbidities, unlike our case, hence the rarity. Malnutrition-induced myocardial alterations and the stress of refeeding may have contributed to the observed ventricular dysfunction. Conclusion: Any malnourished patient should be considered for the potential onset of refeeding syndrome. Risks and complications should not be underestimated despite the patient's age. A multidisciplinary approach is crucial for the proper management of this condition, although its presence does not seem to warrant special considerations for the care of cardiac complications

    No full text
Background: “Kangaroo mother care,” a type of newborn care involving skin-to-skin contact with the mother or other caregiver (grandmother), reduces mortality in neonates with low birth weight (< 2 kg) when initiated after stabilization, but the majority of deaths occur before stabilization. The safety and efficacy of kangaroo mother care initiated soon after birth among neonates with low birth weight iKMC is uncertain. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study involving neonates with a birth weight < 1.8 kg who were assigned to receive immediate kangaroo mother care (intervention) or conventional care in a radiant warmer until their condition stabilized and kangaroo mother care after that (control). The primary outcomes were death in the neonatal period (the first 28 days of life) and the first 72 hours of life. Results: Two hundred eleven neonates and their mothers were assigned to the intervention group (106 neonates with their mothers) or the control group (105 neonates with their mothers). The median daily duration of skin-to-skin contact in the neonatal intensive care unit was 9.9 hours (interquartile range, 6.0 to 15.7) in the intervention group and 3.5 hours (interquartile range, 1.3 to 6.3) in the control group. Neonatal death occurred in the first 28 days in 12% neonates in the intervention group and 15.7% neonates in the control group (relative risk of death, 0.75; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.64 to 0.89; P=0.001); neonatal death in the first 72 hours of life occurred in 4.6% neonates in the intervention group and 5.8% neonates in the control group (Relative risk of death, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.58to 1.04; P = 0.09). Conclusions: Among neonates with a birth weight < 1.8 kg, those who received immediate kangaroo mother care had lower mortality at 28 days than those who received conventional care with kangaroo mother care initiated after stabilization; the between-group difference favoring immediate kangaroo mother care at 72 hours was not significant

Introduction: Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAGB) operation is one of the bariatric surgery methods used to treat extreme obesity. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the changes in food tolerance, quality of alimentation, anthropometric measurements, and emotional and appetite status following LAGB. Materials and methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with 98 patients, 1 year had passed since LAGB. In this study, no sample selection method was used; all patients who met the inclusion criteria and volunteered participated. The questionnaire form included questions to determine the patients’ demographic information, anthropometric measurements, changing food consumption, pre- and post-operative meal consumption, appetite and emotional status. Quality of Alimentation (QA) reflects patients’ post-operative dietary satisfaction and tolerance. The QA Form was used to evaluate post-operative food tolerance. Results: The average age was 38.61±9.82 years, and the mean QA score was 15.59±4.81. The patients lost an average of 30.80±17.76 kg of body weight from pre-operative to post-operative 1st year, and the percentage of patients’ excessive body weight loss was found to be 54.37±26.42. It was determined that the foods that were most difficult to consume after the operation were red meat, white meat, bread, rice, pasta, and salad, respectively. Conclusions: This study uniquely evaluates food tolerance using the QA Form, offering insights into post-operative dietary challenges. LAGB effectively reduces appetite, promotes weight loss, and has a positive impact on patients’ emotional health
