The predatory mite Typhlodromalus aripo, a key biological control agent of the cassava green mite in Africa, is known to feed on cassava exudates and, in the absence of prey, directly on cassava leaves. While cassava cultivars differ greatly in cyanogenic potential (CNP), the consequences of feeding on exudates and leaves from cultivars with different CNP levels for T. aripo biology remain unknown. We conducted laboratory experiments to evaluate several life history parameters of T. aripo on exudates and leaf discs of three cassava cultivars – TME1 (low CNP), TMS91934 (moderate CNP), and TMS82/00661 (high CNP). T. aripo completed its development on exudates of all three cultivars, being faster with higher survival on exudate of TMS82/00661 (6.8 days, 68.2%) compared with TME1 (7.9 days, 53.8%) and TMS91934 (8.2 days, 56.8%). None of the exudates supported oviposition, although adult female survivorship was highest on TMS82/00661. T. aripo was unable to develop beyond the deutonymph stage on the leaf discs of all three cassava cultivars. However, juvenile and adult longevity were greater on TME1 compared with the two other cultivars. Exudates were free of cyanogenic glycosides with similar amino acid concentrations; however, sugar content was twice as high in exudates of TMS8200661 compared with the other cultivars. These findings highlight the importance of cassava exudate quality for predator persistence and biological control success

Post-burn popliteal fossa flexion contracture: our experience about a case in N’Djamena (Chad)

    Get PDF
Introduction: The functional sequels of burns, including knee contracture, are common in children in southern countries due to very limited access to specialized care structures. The treatment is surgical, accompanied by physiotherapy to improve the functional result. Case report: We report the case of an 11-year-old female patient, admitted to the surgery department after three. She suffered from sequelae of thermal flame burn of the trunk and lower limbs. She was treated in a rural hospital, and the evolution was complicated by a contracture of the left popliteal fossa and incomplete healing of the wound. The treatment of the wound was done for thirty days, allowing for an optimal local condition. This was until the suppuration completely stopped (after thirty days). Complete healing was not achieved but the wound was clean, and the C-Reactive Protein was normal. Surgery to release the flange was possible after two months. A plasty to release the flange was carried out eight weeks later by a “chevron” lengthening tenotomy of the hamstring muscles and transversal fascial incisions (to discharge the gastrocnemius muscles). Conclusion: A posterior femoropedious cast splint in extension was placed. Physiotherapy was started early, and a skin graft (thin and total) was performed eight weeks post-operatively. The evaluation at 18 months was good, with a slight limp when walking

Ethical Issues of Generative AI in the Aviation Cybersecurity Environment

    Get PDF
The present study aims to analyze the ethical issues related to the use of generative artificial intelligence in aviation, with a particular focus on cybersecurity aspects. Therefore, all existing ethical concerns regarding bias, misinformation, fraud, privacy, and copyright infringement on the internet apply equally to content created by generative artificial intelligence. These concerns underscore the well-documented issues about the bias of internet search engine algorithms. Numerous parties have contended that ethical considerations should have been a factor in the development of this technology. This article discusses the results of a survey conducted among students of the Polish Air Force Academy, which addresses key issues related to regulation, training, and awareness-raising regarding the ethical use of artificial intelligence. A mixed-methods approach was utilized in the present study. Quantitative data were collected via an online survey (N = 57, F = 27, M = 30) conducted between September and October 2024. Furthermore, a total of 15 semi-structured anonymous interviews were conducted with experts in cybersecurity and AI ethics to obtain qualitative information. The interviews were conducted with aviation specialists, cybersecurity analysts, and AI ethics researchers who had between five and 20 years of experience. The aviation sector was selected as the subject of the study due to its high sensitivity to technological risk, its reliance on secure systems, and the critical importance of public trust in automated and AI-assisted systems. In Poland, there is only one university that specializes in aviation and accepts both military and civilian students. This research will make a substantial contribution to enhancing aviation safety in the future through the implementation of a robust management framework based on comprehensive knowledge. This research is of particular pertinence in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine and in Poland's neighborhood

Beyond Therapy: A Conceptual Review of Emotion-Focused Coaching for Mental Well-Being

    Get PDF
Emotion-Focused Coaching (EFC) is used as a non-therapeutic coaching approach that bases its work on emotions to help people develop personally and achieve life satisfaction. This literature review integrates theoretical foundations with academic research to study EFC's effects on emotional awareness and self-compassion development and its impact on psychological resilience and relationship quality. EFC serves people who maintain normal functioning in their personal and professional lives through a structured method to identify and validate emotions before they need clinical help. The research findings demonstrate that EFC has four main advantages, which include better emotional regulation and identification, reduced self-criticism and enhanced self-acceptance, improved stress management, and strengthened interpersonal connection skills. The literature suggests that EFC may be particularly suitable in education, healthcare, and leadership contexts with high emotional demands, complementing goal-oriented coaching models. Research on Emotional-Focused Coaching currently exists as conceptual studies, which prove the necessity for emotional facilitation training, but more empirical studies are needed to measure EFC effectiveness and evaluate its cross-cultural adaptability

This study examined the place that workplace safety occupies in the execution of tasks within the companies Ruashi Mining and Chemaf. It used the psychosocial survey method, documentary techniques, interviews and a questionnaire designed in the form of a Likert scale. These instruments were applied to a sample of 420 agents distributed as follows: 240 for the Ruashi Mining company and 180 agents for the Chemaf company, extracted using the systematic random sampling method. The study took place over the period from 2019 to 2023. Its theoretical reference is based on the postulate of Icsi (2017, p.12), according to which: "every organizational entity has a safety culture; in the sense that the actors share certain ways of doing and thinking, which have consequences on safety. And the safety culture reflects the place that the organizational culture gives to safety in all decisions, all services, all professions, and at all hierarchical levels." After analyzing the data using SPSS software, and after processing them using Pearson's non-parametric Chi-square test, t-test and z-test. The results indicate that workplace safety does not occupy an important place in the execution of tasks within these two companies. The occupational safety practices within Ruashi Mining and Chemaf are speculative, as they are not based on any international occupational safety standards, such as ISO 45001, 48001, and OHSAS 18001. This explains the occurrence of workplace accidents in these companies

Factors of PONASI Ecological Complex Resource Degradation

    Get PDF
PONASI is an ecological complex which is located in the southern part of Burkina Faso. It abounds with fauna and floristic species. But these resources are in a phase of degradation. The aim of this study is to analyze the main factors contributing to the degradation of the PONASI ecological complex. In order to assess the degradation factors, a systematic approach was used. It is an approach that takes into account the various phenomena responsible for degradation and the interactions. Data collection techniques focused on documentary research, interviews, field surveys, the use of the snowball sampling method, and the processing of some climatic parameters. For this research, a total of twelve (12) villages were surveyed. The results showed that anthropogenic and climatic factors contribute to the degradation of the resources of the PONASI ecological complex. The anthropogenic factors consist of vegetation fires, wood cutting, grazing, and picking immature fruit, and agricultural encroachment. These factors are exacerbated by the limits of governance which result in a lack of legal texts' application, a weak appropriation of the decentralization policy by the local authorities. The results of this study have demonstrated that there are a multitude of factors that contribute to the degradation of the PONASI ecological complex. It is urgent to take the necessary measures to reverse this trend of degradation

Concepts and Their Semantic Analysis: The Case of „Intelligentsia“

    Get PDF
Cognitive linguistics determines that the world is presented and reflected in our consciousness as definite structures and describes how this knowledge is verbally represented. Language is used not only for communicative purposes, but at the same time, it stores the information gathered by a definite speech community. Knowledge, experience and the results of cognition gained by a human being are presented as the so-called concepts. The object of this article is to describe one concept, which is “intelligentsia.” The method applied in the study is that of “the semic analysis” that dissects the meaning of a word or text into fundamental components of meaning called semes.  There has been applied contextualization as a type of semiotic analysis, when the meaning of a concept can change depending on the context in which the sign appears. The cognitive approach used in the study assigns a special role to the human factor in the process of perception of the concepts. The article is the first and general part of the semantic research on the term “intelligentsia”. The results of the study show the main and often mutually exclusive characteristics of the concept “intelligentsia” and the completely different contexts of its application. In modern Georgian society, this term has acquired more negative implications (or peripheral or core semes)  when used by politicians and has been used mainly as a positive concept when used by non-politicians. This concept represents some basic humane features of a human being and should be widely applied by modern societies. As for future research, the evolution of "intelligentsia" in modern societies, considering the impact of globalization, digital media, and shifting academic and cultural paradigms, is of interest

Transformative Actions from Learning Assessment: A Cross-Context Typology, Coding Protocol, and Baseline Evidence from a Public University

    Get PDF
Institutions often collect abundant evidence of student learning yet struggle to translate it into meaningful change. This article addresses that gap by introducing a portable typology and transparent coding protocol for classifying “transformative actions” that emerge from learning assessment and lead to pedagogical, curricular, and student-support improvements. Using qualitative content analysis of records from an online assessment system and institutional dashboards at a large public university in the Caribbean, we compiled and coded 213 documented actions reported by graduate and undergraduate programs during 2022-2025. Nearly half of the actions involved course-level pedagogical modifications (43%), while formal curricular changes were rare (2%). A substantial share lacked sufficient descriptive detail to classify (31%), indicating a documentation challenge that can undermine institutional learning from assessment. We also observed emerging student-led initiatives and meta-assessment practices focused on improving rubrics, calibration, and feedback cycles. Beyond reporting distributions, the article contributes (a) a cross-context typology with coding rules and examples, (b) a reproducible template for program-level reporting and follow-up, and (c) baseline indicators to monitor progress in closing the assessment-to-action loop over time. We discuss implications for moving from compliance to improvement, strengthening the linkage between evidence and decision-making, and scaling effective practices to the curricular level

Care in the Weave: Ageing, Complexity, and Territorial Services - A Qualitative Analysis of how Services, Families, and Communities Co-Construct Care for Older People

    Get PDF
As population aging reshapes contemporary societies, healthcare systems must evolve beyond linear, disease-centric models towards integrative and context-sensitive forms of care. This article, grounded in complexity theory and relational pedagogy, explores how community and family nurses, together with older adults and caregivers, co-construct care networks within small mountain municipalities in northern Italy. Based on qualitative research conducted as part of the AGE-IT project, the study analyzes ten in-depth interviews with elderly women and a participatory mapping of the health and social resources of the area. Using The Listening Guide (Gilligan et al., 2003), the analysis highlights the plurality of voices and identities that emerge in later life: women as carers, workers, volunteers and independent citizens. Their narratives reveal the centrality of autonomy, relational proximity and meaningful places in supporting health and well-being. Community nurses appear as pivotal figures, weaving together formal services, families and informal networks, while mapping practices highlight both distributed resources and systemic gaps in remote areas. The results illustrate how aging, care and territory are intertwined within complex adaptive systems, where health depends as much on relationships as on services. The firm supports policies and practices that enhance the voice of older adults, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and promote inclusive spaces that foster belonging and participation. In doing so, she reimagines community nursing as a form of caring in texture, a living practice that listens, connects, and evolves with the communities it serves

Effets du substrat et du régime hydrique en pépinière sur la croissance de Afzelia africana

    Get PDF
This study focuses on Afzelia africana, a species that is highly prized for its socio-economic importance in Sahelian countries, which results in strong anthropic pressure on the species. This pressure, combined with the often difficult climatic conditions, has a negative impact on the regeneration of the species and its conservation in the wild. The objective of this study is to contribute to the evaluation of the effect of the substrate on the growth and development of seedlings in the spine. Seeds pre-treated with these three pre-treatments were conducted in nursery and sown on a substrate made of sand and cashew potting soil with the proportions 1/3 potting soil, 2/3 potting soil, 3/3 potting soil and 3/3 sand and the direct seeded ones were subjected to a water stress at 60 days with a different watering regime (1x/day, 1x/2days, 1x/3days and 1x/4days) for a growth test. The results from this second phase of the study show that the 1/3 potting soil, 2/2 potting soil, and 3/3 potting soil substrates gave the best growth compared to the 100% sand substrate at 60 days. For the water regime, the 1x/day, 1x/2day and 1x/3day frequencies recorded the best growth in diameter, height, and number of leaves compared to the 1x/4day frequency at 105 days and 45 days after the application of the stress
