GENDER PAY-GAP: UTILISING MULTIVARIATE APPROACH TO UNDERSTAND THE CAUSES OF UNEQUAL PAY BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN IN SOUTH AFRICA
Purpose: The gender pay gap in South Africa has greatly reduced since the implementation of the Employment Equity Act in 1998. However, there is still a pay gap that cannot be sufficiently explained and addressed by government leaders and scholars. Scholars, policymakers, the radical left, and feminists have carefully highlighted and addressed what is considered to be the major causes, such as segregation of women, women's stereotypes, marginalization of women, wage penalties due to time away from work, child nurturing responsibilities given to women, and inequality in salaries and remunerations. However, the World Bank reported that from 2007 on, the gender pay gap in South Africa was no longer showing any sign of reduction. It was stagnant and thereafter oscillating. As such the purpose of this research is to investigate the causes of the stagnation and the oscillation, and to provide recommendations.
Theoretical Framework: This research used multivariate analysis theory to make further contributions on the causes of gender pay inequality in South Africa in order to address the stagnation and oscillation of the existing pay gap.
Design/Methodology/Approach: The research method used is qualitative approach. The research design comprises men and women who are already in the work industry in both private and public sector.
Findings: This research found that gender pay gap in South Africa is caused by women’s family-career crisis as a main contributor, followed by interests and personality traits, equality of opportunity and career selection.
Research Implications: This research paper gives light to further research in Women’s family-career crisis as it seems to be the major contributor to gender pay gap in South Africa. The assessment of how impactful family-career crisis is on gender pay gap is also essential in order to understand the magnitude of it on gender pay gap in South Africa.
Originality/Value: This research paper found significant causes of gender pay gap such as ‘family career-crisis’ that shows to heavily contribute to the gender pay in South Africa. This might further give clarity to the governments on the existence of gender pay gap. Moreover this research may help in redefining the government policies on the approach of gender pay gap
ARTIFICIAL CRISES IN FINANCIAL MARKETS: PROBLEMS OF DIAGNOSIS AND PREVENTION
Purpose: The aim of this study is to diagnose and prevent crises in the country's financial markets by managing the connectedness of the attacked market with other.
Theoretical Framework: Non-statistical changes in the largest connected markets and the parameters of the attacked market's connection with them. There is a need to consider ways to counter crises by managing the connection of the attacked market with other financial markets in the country.
Design/Methodology/Approach: Methods for diagnosing crises are proposed to identify signs of a man-made crisis and strategies for its prevention. The proposed approach will prevent the actions of unscrupulous private financial market operators who want to receive unscrupulous income, stimulating volatility.
Findings: Among the most important results, it was determined that there are serious shortcomings in the organization and structure of financial markets that require active government intervention. The state can not only legislative and administrative, but also financial methods prevent the actions of dishonest operators or minimize the consequences of the crises caused by them.
Research, Practical & Social implications: This study makes it possible to identify signs of an artificial crisis and strategies for its prevention. Using the data of this study, the state operator in the financial markets can distribute its financial, administrative and informational resources in turn against its opponents and thus have a significant advantage over each of them.
Originality/Value: The value of the study lies in the fact that various methods for diagnosing financial crises are offered by studying non-statistical changes in the largest connected markets and the parameters of the attacked market's connection with them. Using this information, the state can minimize the consequences of artificial financial crises
Influence of Soft Skills on Employability in Large Companies in the Processing Industry, from a Management Perspective
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to identify the relationship between soft skills and employability in large companies in the transformation sector in the state of Hidalgo. It was a quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional research. Owners or managers of 117 large companies in the transformation sector from 27 municipalities in the state of Hidalgo were interviewed. The results showed that managers perceive two types of soft skills related to employability: 1) analytical ability and reasoning and 2) intuition and experience. The factors that influence the first are the same reasonable and innovative thinking, however, it was also found that knowing one's own emotions is significant.
Theoretical Framework: Soft skills must be understood as the ability to carry out processes and be able to use knowledge in a responsible way to achieve an objective. Skills are part of a holistic concept of competence, which involves the mobilization of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to meet complex demands (OECD, 2018). There are different types of skills, such as; cognitive and metacognitive skills, including critical thinking, creative thinking, learning to learn, and self-regulation. Social and emotional skills are defined, which include empathy, self-efficacy, responsibility and collaboration, as well as practical and physical skills, among others (OECD, 2018). The study references various authors who have addressed the relationship between these and employability. The literature review delves into the various studies on the matter.
Design/Methodology/Approach: A quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional research was carried out. The object of the study were large companies in the transformation sector of 27 municipalities in the state of Hidalgo.
Findings: A factor analysis was carried out to determine the soft skills with the highest factor loading, as well as those of employability. Through multiple regression analysis, it was identified that soft skills showed a significant relationship with each of the two factors found in employability (Anderson et al., 2012; Hair et al., 2019; Lind et al., 2012). The factors “Understanding the feelings of others and towards others and reasonable and innovative thinking” and “Knowing one's own emotions and feelings of others” obtained a positive coefficient, that is, both the understanding of the feelings of others, Reasonable and innovative thinking, as well as knowing one's own emotions and feelings of others, have a direct positive relationship with employability. Given that the coefficient of factor 2 is greater than that of factor 3 (0.388 > 0.133), superiors perceive that understanding the feelings of others and having reasonable and innovative thinking contributes more to employability, analytical capacity, reasoning and socialization, more than knowing one's own emotions and feelings of others. Also the “recognition, control and consequences of one's own emotions and creative thinking” was significant. The soft skills summarized in the factor defined as “creating assertive relationships and understanding the needs of others” were not significant for employability in either of the two multiple regression models.
Research, Practical & Social Implications: This research allows us to confirm, through inferential analysis, the influence of soft skills on employability, understood as transferable skills and qualifications that reinforce people's ability to take advantage of the education and training opportunities presented to them with a view to to find and keep decent work (International Labor Organization, 2019).
Originality/Value: The study provides a statistical model that confirms the relationship between soft skills and employability. Which benefits both employers and professionals in search of professional development
THE ROLE OF THEME ROUTES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL TOURISM
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to draw attention to the positive tourism development effects of thematic routes in rural areas, using the analysis results of good practices in Germany.
Theoretical Framework: The interpretation of the thematic routes and the history of their creation are presented with the help of the literature related to the topic. The examination of the issue is incomplete, so the work aims to fill a research gap.
Design/Methodology/Approach: In the ongoing research, in addition to the analysis of secondary sources, we performed a website analysis and visited the most important thematic routes using the methodology of personal qualitative observation. We have created a database covering more than 250 thematic routes.
Findings: Good practices discovered during our research confirm that the development of tourist thematic routes can be an effective tool for the protection of rural heritage and for the development of rural gastronomy, in the presence of a suitable management organization.
Research, Practical & Social Implications: The German practice can serve as a good example in other countries in the development and operation of effective tourist thematic routes. However, effective operation requires a responsible "host" organization, professional management, and it is necessary to take into account trends affecting the demand-side of tourism during development.
Originality/Value: The results show the chronological distribution of the development of the thematic routes, and contain a recommendation on the important aspects to be taken into account during development
Competency Development of Food Tourism in Thailand
Purpose: Food tourism has become great potential in the tourism industry, especially in Thailand. When foreign tourists come to travel and witness the diverse gastronomic experience at local levels, however, in 2022, Thailand received 11.15 million foreign tourists, and only 19.45% came because of food attractions. Therefore, this study aims to develop competency in food tourism in Thailand.
Theoretical Framework: This study examines and reviews the concepts of competitive advantage and food tourism. Competitiveness in terms of human resource is the ability to sell his or her ability over other competitor’s employees. Competitive Advantage in human resource is developed either by himself or by company attitude and resource. Competitive Advantage can be developed by (1) Elevating productivity, (2) Purposeful collaboration, (3) Learning Agility, (4) Social binding, (5) well- being. Moreover, food tourism is defined as “visitation to primary and secondary food producers, food festivals, restaurants and specific locations for which food tasting and/or experiencing the attributes of specialist food production region are the primary motivating factor for travel”. Food tourism is also defined as cultural turn from those early management-focused studies to more wholesome and exploratory discussions of food and culture. Not only did the frequency or volume of the studies significantly increase, but so did the variety of research approaches and concepts be explored.
Design/Methodology/Approach: This quantitative research collected data from food tourism stakeholders in Thailand 400, including foreign visitors, local visitors, restaurant owners, culinary academic institutions, and tourism authorities. Data were analyzed in descriptive and inferential statistics, and a structural equation model tested the hypothesis.
Findings: The findings reveal that (1) Tourism policy must include food tourism in the tourism event and public relation scheme of tourism authorities, (2) Unique local cultural experiences must be embedded into food stories, and (3) Nutrition and herbal nutrition must be presented for health-conscious tourists. The observed variables had component weights between 0.241 and 0.79. They were significantly different from zero at the 0.01 level. Latent variables were between 0.058 - 1.153, and 2) the harmonization of the hypothetical model and the empirical data found that all criteria were within the acceptable range (Pass) structural equation model analysis (Chi-Square = 44.113, df = 35, p = 0.139, RMSEA = 0.026, GFI = 0.026, AGFI = 0.960).
Research Practical and Social Implication: Food tourism has become great potential in the tourism industry, especially in Thailand. When foreign tourists come to travel and witness the diverse gastronomic experience at local levels. However, in 2022, Thailand received 11.15 million foreign tourists; only 19.45% came because of food attractions. Therefore, this study aims to develop competency in food tourism in Thailand. EMPLOYEE JOB SATISFACTION AND EMPLOYEE PRODUCTIVITY IN NIGERIA'S FEDERAL CIVIL SERVICE: AN EMPIRICAL EXAMINATION OF COMMUNICATION AS METRIC FOR JOB SATISFACTION
Purpose: The study examined the effect of employee job satisfaction on employee productivity, assessing the impact of communication as an indicator of job satisfaction in the Nigerian federal civil service. A part of efforts to achieve the eight Sustainable Development Goal of Decent Work and Economic Growth by 2030.
Theoretical Framework: Low performance and high turnover rates can result from job dissatisfaction which has been peculiar case in the public and private sector, attempt to deal with it has not been yielding positive result in the civil service in Nigeria (Rinny et al., 2020; Sadiq et al. 2020). Therefore, there is need to empirically investigate the impact of communication on employee productivity in Nigerian federal civil service which lacks sufficient research.
Methodology: The study used a survey research design and purposive non-probability sampling where the data are collected through the distribution of 2,836 questionnaires to the staff of 10 Nigerian federal civil services. In order to gather data for the study, Demographic data were analyzed using basic descriptive statistical methods like mean, percentages, and standard deviations, while inferential statistics were analyzed using econometric methods like multiple and logistic regression, as well as Karl Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficients.
Findings: Finding of the study showed that employee productivity is strongly and favorably affected by (communication) as proxy for job satisfaction. Nonetheless, in the Nigerian Federal Civil Service, the interaction of work environment moderating between communication had no impact on employee productivity.
Research, Practical & Social Implication: The study recommends that organizations should establish transparent and accessible communication channels that involves implementing regular feedback mechanisms to ensure that employees feel heard and valued
Originality/Value: It is quite unusual with previous study using communication as proxy for job satisfaction as an independent variable, Also, none of the previous used work environment as mediating variable in the interplay between communication and employee productivity in civil service in Federal Capital Territory Abuja Nigeria
