    Get PDF
Purpose: The objective of this work is to apply a predictive model of bacterial growth to determine the concentration of total coliforms, under controlled laboratory conditions, in wastewater from the city of Riobamba that flows into the Chambo River (Ecuador).   Theoretical Framework: Wastewater pollution is a global problem that affects water quality and public health. Population growth has a drastic impact on the contamination of water bodies, particularly in Ecuador, since most of the effluents are not adequately treated, which becomes a public health and environmental problem. For this reason, over the years, total and fecal coliforms have been used as indicators of water quality.   Design/Methodology/Approach: The study used a mathematical modeling approach of a logistic and deterministic type, and calculated through an executable command designed in the integrated development environment (IDE) with the Visual C# programming language (logic) and the XAML design language (interface).   Findings: The results achieved are 1) the theoretical construction of a mathematical model (logistic model) starting from a differential equation and the taking of three experimental measurements, 2) the computer construction of the bacterial growth model and 3) it has been demonstrated that there is agreement between the values obtained from the model of total coliform growth and the experimental results with a margin of error of less than 1%.   Research, Practical & Social Implications: This information can be used by stakeholders to determine actions that could improve current conditions.   Originality/Value: The result of this study emphasizes that the model proposed can reproduce the growth of coliforms up to a maximum growth point, it is necessary to continue with the development of the same in the stationary phase of bacterial growth and then in the decay phase

    Get PDF
Purpose: The aim of this article is to understand the impact of retailer brand name substitution on consumer trust.   Theoretical Framework: Drawing on existing research on product brand substitution, the paper introduces variables that could influence consumer trust in situations where a brand name is substituted.   Design/Methodology/Approach:  To achieve this goal, a quantitative study was conducted among 351 Tunisian consumers to test the hypotheses and quantify the impact of each variable.   Findings: The results of this research highlight three variables that can contribute to building consumer trust during a retailer brand name substitution, namely: (1) communication about the change; (2) perceived similarity and (3) perceived benefits derived from the change. The results also indicated that consumer attachment has a moderating effect on the relationship between trust and its determinants. More precisely, the stronger the attachment to the initial retailer brand, the more the consumer's trust in the brand decreases after the brand substitution.   Research, Practical & Social implications: This paper assists practitioners in identifying the key success determinants that can facilitate the transfer of consumer trust from the old retailer brand to the new one. It provides guidance for a successful retailer brand name substitution.   Originality/Value: This research fulfils an identified need to study how consumers’ trust in a brand can be transferred successfully in the case of a retailer brand name substitution

    Get PDF
Objective: The study explored perceptions on how digital health interventions could be used to improve management efficiencies and effectiveness of HIV/AIDS projects in Kenya.   Theoretical Framework: The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology was employed.   Method: A total of 32 healthcare service providers who were on duty (during the period of data collection January-February 2022) at comprehensive care centers providing HIV/AIDS care and treatment services in eight high volume public health facilities in Kisumu county, Kenya were purposively sampled and subjected to a key informant interview guide. The participants were healthcare service providers who had been at the health facility for at least one year and had experienced the use of any digital health intervention. The study explored views on knowledge about the digital health interventions and perceptions on the impact of the interventions.   Results and Discussion: Most users perceived the digital health interventions to have increased management efficiencies in terms of keeping appointments by clients, reduction in turnaround times of receiving laboratory results, increased accountability for drugs and improved reporting due to real time data on the digital health interventions. Overall, digital health interventions resulted in faster, evidence based and appropriate clinical management decisions.   Research Implications: Technology has a critical role in improving project management practices by enhancing efficiencies and effectiveness in processes and service delivery.   Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature on digital health which is a new area of interest particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and Kenya in particular

    Get PDF
Purpose: With rising deglobalization and geopolitical tensions, foreign brands from hostile countries face the market risk of consumer animosity. This paper aims to explore how brand image helps to increase consumers' purchase intentions in the host country toward products from hostile countries.   Design/methodology/approach: Taking Taiwan's young consumers' willingness to purchase Chinese brand smartphones as an example, the data were collected through questionnaire surveys and analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation model.   Findings: The empirical results show that the brand image perceived by consumers on product quality, corporate integrity, corporate abilities, brand localization, and official affiliation with hostile countries will significantly affect consumers' purchase intentions.   Originality/Value: This paper proposes a new construct—official affiliation (the degree to which a brand is associated with a hostile government) and demonstrates that the mediating effect of brand image mitigates the impact of consumer animosity, which provides a more comprehensive explanation for why consumer animosity sometimes does not significantly affect purchase intention

SNIPEFISH (MACRORAMPHOSUS SPP.) ABUNDANCE AND TROPHIC DYNAMICS IN RESPONSE TO UPWELLING REGIME IN THE ATLANTIC REGION FROM CAPE BLANC TO CAPE BOUJDOR (20°50 N TO 26°00 N)

    Get PDF
Purpose: The objective of this study is to to deepen the understanding of the trophic behavior of the snipefish through an analysis of its diet in relation to the pelagic ecosystem's parameters.   Theoretical Framework: Two sympatric species of snipefish have shown significant population increases on the continental shelf of the northern sub-region of the Canary Current upwelling system during intermittent periods in the 1970s, 1990s, and again over the past five years.   Method: Between 2018 and 2021, we collected samples to analyze the stomach contents of snipefish and measure zooplankton size. Trophic indices were calculated to characterize the feeding habits of the species. To examine potential affinities between hydrological and biological parameters in snipefish distribution areas, we applied Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a statistical method that clarifies relationships between these two data matrices.   Results and Discussion: The results obtained reveal a significant correlation between the range of engulfed prey through the snout of the snipefish and the size of zooplankton available and accessible on the continental shelf. The trophic strategy of the snipefish seems attesting to a case of a species responding to a marine ecosystem subject to hydrological disturbances generated by the level of the upwelling’s intensity.   Research Implications: this research will contribute to the current understanding regarding the resurgence of snipefish in the northern sub-region of the Canary Current upwelling ecosystem.   Originality/Value: This study contributes to understanding the snipefish's trophic strategy and its responses within a marine ecosystem affected by hydrological disturbances caused by the intensity of upwelling

BREAKING BARRIERS: INVESTIGATING THE FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE EFFEC-TIVE INTEGRATION OF PWDS AND SENIOR CITIZEN WORKERS IN METRO MANILA’S FOOD CHAIN INDUSTRY

    Get PDF
Objective: This paper aims to determine the effectiveness of PWDs and Senior Citizen workers in Metro Manila’s Food Establishments by assessing the various factors and barriers that affect their integration.   Theoretical Framework: In this study, the major theory used is the employment continuum, which evaluates the workers, employer, and the workplace itself. This theory is used as a roadmap to ensure a successful implementation of employment.   Method: This study employed a mixed-methods approach in which data from both qualitative and quantitative souces is examined, mean of grouped data, frequency and percentage distribution, and correlation matrix to assess the different relationships between the variables   Results and Discussion: The study revealed that the effectiveness of workers has a positive moderate correlation to the factors and a low negative correlation to the barriers. This suggests employer options for improving employee comfort are limited. Effective integration requires clear laws and regulations.   Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this research contribute to the fields of disability studies, aging studies, and organizational behavior by challenging stereotypes, promoting social justice, and informing evidence-based practices for inclusive workplaces.   Originality/Value: This study illuminates the critical role of inclusive workplace practices and supportive policies in empowering PWDs and Senior Citizen within the food industry. By identifying key barriers and facilitators to integration, this study provides valuable insights for policymakers, employers, and advocates to implement strategies that promote the full potential of these marginzalized groups

NAVIGATING AUDIT COSTS: THE INTERPLAY OF MEKANISME CORPORATE GOVERNANCE, EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION, AUDIT RISK, AND FAIR VALUE

    Get PDF
Objective: The purpose of this study is to critically examine and test the factors that determine audit fees, with a particular focus on the roles of corporate governance mechanisms, executive compensation, audit risk, and the fair value of non-current assets. By analyzing these factors, the study aims to provide deeper insights into the complex drivers of audit pricing and contribute to the ongoing discourse on audit quality and financial transparency.   Theoretical Framework: Agency theory emphasizes the conflicts of interest between principals (investors) and agents (management) arising from information asymmetry, which results in audit fees that confirm the accuracy of financial statements. Additionally, corporate governance mechanisms, executive compensation, audit risk, and fair value influence this dynamic.   Method: This study investigates manufacturing companies in the consumer goods sub-sector listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2018 to 2022. A purposive sampling method was used to select 42 companies each year, totaling 210 annual reports obtained from the IDX website and the companies' websites.   Results and Discussion: The research findings show that a higher number of independent commissioners, a higher number of audit committees, higher executive compensation, and the use of fair value of non-current assets can increase the cost of an external audit. However, this study has yet to be able to prove that managerial ownership and audit risk can affect audit fees.   Research Implications: This research offers insights for auditors, management, and regulators. Auditors should align fees with audit quality, factoring in business complexity and risk. Reasonable fees reflect management's investment in internal controls, enhancing financial statement credibility. Regulators must ensure fees support high-quality audits to prevent failures.   Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by highlighting how corporate governance factors independent commissioners, audit committees, executive compensation, and fair value of non-current assets impact audit fees. It emphasizes their role in enhancing audit quality and offers valuable insights for auditors, management, and regulators in justifying audit fee structures
