THE INFLUENCE OF TRUST ON CONSUMER ATTITUDES AND PURCHASE INTENTIONS REGARDING SECOND-HAND GOODS ON ONLINE PLATFORMS

Introduction: This study explores the role of electronic trust and its influence on both the attitudes and behavioural intentions of consumers engaged in collaborative consumption practices. A quantitative survey was conducted among 149 individuals who are members of Facebook groups dedicated to the buying and selling of second-hand items. The findings reveal that two dimensions of trust, credibility, and integrity, have a significant positive effect on consumers’ attitudes and purchase intentions. In contrast, the dimension of benevolence does not exhibit any significant effect on either attitude or behavioural intention.   Objective: The objective of this study is to examine the role of electronic trust (e-trust) and its impact on consumers’ attitudes and behavioural intentions in the context of collaborative consumption, specifically within second-hand marketplaces on social media.   Theoretical Framework: This study is based on trust theory, focusing on three key dimensions of electronic trust: credibility, integrity, and benevolence. These elements are hypothesized to influence consumer attitudes and behavioural intentions in online collaborative consumption, particularly within second-hand marketplaces on social media.   Method: A quantitative research approach was employed, using a structured survey distributed to 149 participants who are active members of Facebook groups engaged in the buying and selling of second-hand goods.   Results and Discussion: The results indicate that the trust dimensions of credibility and integrity significantly and positively influence both consumer attitudes and behavioural intentions. However, benevolence does not show any significant effect on either construct. This suggests that in peer-to-peer online transactions, perceived reliability and honesty are more critical than emotional goodwill.   Research Implications: These findings have practical implications for platform designers and group administrators who aim to foster trustworthy environments. Highlighting credibility and integrity—through verified profiles, transparent communication, or user reviews—may enhance consumer engagement and purchasing behavior in online collaborative consumption platforms.   Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by examining electronic trust in informal online second-hand, an area that remains relatively unexplored. Its originality lies in the application of trust theory to collaborative consumption settings, focusing on how specific dimensions of trust—credibility, integrity, and benevolence—influence consumer behaviour. The findings provide practical value by identifying which trust factors most effectively encourage positive attitudes and purchase intentions, offering guidance for improving trust in peer-to-peer digital environments
