    No full text

Context and backgroundThe importance of mangroves forest is undeniable especially in the coastal regions of Kenya. It’s the hub of ecological and socio-economic well-being, provision of protection against shoreline erosion, biodiversity support and contributes immensely to the livelihoods of the local communities. Nevertheless, the ecosystem encounters significant threats such as deforestation, pollution and climate change which compromise their sustainability and the livelihoods of the local communities. This study focused on mapping and developing a zonation strategy for the mangrove ecosystems of Mida Creek, Kilifi County in Kenya using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The aim was to identify areas for restoration, conservation, and sustainable use based on the health of mangrove vegetation. The study employed remote sensing techniques such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) to assess the health of mangrove forests. Goal and Objectives:The study aimed at utilization of geospatial technologies to come up with a mangrove map zonation. This was done by considering various factors to designate areas for restoration, conservation, and sustainable utilization of Mida Creek mangrove forest in Kilifi County.Methodology:The study utilized Landsat imageries for 2018 and 2024 which were sourced from USGS, it also deployed Mida Creek Shapefile from Regional Centre of Excellence (RCoE). ArcGIS pro. was used for the spatial analysis and visualization of Mida Creek’s zonation. Results:The study results revealed that 18.4% of the mangrove forest requires intervention because it has completely depleted, 23.6% of mangrove forest needs conservation it is unhealthy and the largest segment 58.0%, indicates regions deemed safe for sustainable utilization. These proportions give insight into the balance between human impact and natural preservation within Mida Creek's ecosystem

Landcover, Land Use and Technical Efficiency of Honey Production in Tigray

    No full text
Context and background Ethiopia's agricultural sector faces significant challenges that threaten food security and sustainability, especially in rural areas dominated by smallholder farmers. In the Tanqua-Abergele district, many households engage in beekeeping, which has great potential for economic development and environmental sustainability. The district's diverse landscape, characterized by inaccessible lands for conventional farming, is rich in trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, making it ideal for honey production. However, inadequate beekeeping management systems lead to low productivity and efficiency. To enhance productivity sustainably, it is essential to investigate the impact of land cover—such as forested areas and floral diversity—on the technical efficiency of honey production. Goal and Objectives: The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of landcover and land use on the technical efficiency of honey producers in the district, identifying key skills required, challenges and providing insights that can inform strategies to improve beekeeping practices and overall productivity. Methodology: The study employed a multi-faceted approach to assess the technical efficiency of honey producers in the Tanqua-Abergele district. A parametric stochastic frontier model was implemented using maximum likelihood estimation. Additionally, a Tobit model was applied to analyze the impact of land cover and other socio-economic factors on technical efficiency, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the influences affecting honey production in the region. Results: This study offered key insights into the technical efficiency of smallholder honey producers, revealing an average efficiency score of 84%. While producers generally utilize resources well, there are notable variations that suggest opportunities for improvement. The study highlights land size, land cover, equipment, labor, and honey variety as critical factors influencing productivity, with increases in these inputs significantly enhancing honey output. The Tobit model identifies determinants of technical inefficiency, indicating that female-headed households tend to be less efficient, while higher education and larger family sizes correlate with improved efficiency. Access to extension services and the use of preferred honey sources also boost productivity. Further analysis of land cover and land use variables reveals important effects on technical inefficiency. Increased wildflower coverage significantly reduces inefficiency, enhancing honey production. Grassland and pasture also positively impact efficiency, while alfalfa, clover, and sunflower contribute similarly. In contrast, cultivated land shows a marginally positive effect on inefficiency, suggesting it may not support honey production as effectively as more natural land types. The analysis highlights the potential for improving honey production through strategic land use planning

    No full text
Context and background Over the years there has been an increase in studies on expropriation and compensation in Zimbabwe. However, there are limited studies on expropriation and compensation for peri-urban communal land. Goal and Objectives: This paper examines the existing legal framework governing expropriation and compensation for peri-urban communal properties in Zimbabwe, identifying gaps or deficiencies. By proposing potential solutions to these shortcomings, the paper seeks to contribute to developing more equitable and effective policies in this area. Given the limited research on compensation for peri-urban properties in Zimbabwe, this study also aims to expand the existing body of literature on expropriation and compensation. Methodology: The paper is based on the social interpretivism paradigm, the qualitative research approach and the case study research design. Data were collected through statutory reviews and key informant interviews with central government and rural district council officials, elected councillors and traditional leaders. A combination of systematic content and thematic analysis was used during data analysis and coding was done manually. Results: Key findings revealed inadequacies and misalignments between the legal provisions of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, the Communal Land Act and the Land Acquisition Act. The paper recommends harmonizing existing valuation laws for expropriated communal land and developing specific valuation procedures tailored to peri-urban communal properties. This would ensure that affected communal landholders receive fair and equitable compensation for their expropriated land

Sustainable Solutions for Paper Production: Improving Paper Production by Recovering Wheat Straw

    No full text
Papermaking has always been a prosperous industry, for the sake of the continued need for man to make paper despite technological progress and the development of current information media. However, the stationery industry suffers from a lack of raw materials. The search for new materials must consider protecting our natural plant fiber resources not to exhaust our ecosystems. With this in mind, we have sought to add value to agricultural byproducts. Thus, this project focuses on the possibility of recovering waste through the exploitation of wheat straw in the paper industry. Our results showed that wheat straw shanks' physical and mechanical characteristics are like those of esparto shanks. However, the degree of whiteness of esparto is significantly higher compared to that of wheat straw. This new format can be considered the starting point for a promising research path allowing better exploitation of wheat straw, which is widely used. Our results have shown that it is possible to make paper from it by slightly modifying the conditions used to make esparto sheets

Pyoderma gangrenosum may mimic breast cancer in a rare differential diagnosis: A case report

    No full text
Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare skin disease characterized by neutrophilic inflammation, often associated with systemic pathologies. Although this condition generally affects other areas of the body, it can occasionally manifest in the breast, where it can mimic neoplastic or infectious lesions. A clinical case illustrates this rare presentation: a 68-year-old Moroccan patient, initially referred for suspected breast cancer, presented with painful, rapidly progressing ulcerative-necrotic lesions on the breast with purplish edges. These lesions were accompanied by localized skin involvement on the leg. Histological examination of the breast lesions revealed a neutrophilic infiltrate, suggesting an inflammatory origin. In addition, worsening of symptoms was observed after a breast biopsy, suggesting a pathergy reaction. Further investigations led to a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), while infectious and tumor assessments were negative. The definitive diagnosis of Pyoderma gangrenosum was confirmed. Combined treatment including corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and local care was implemented. This case highlights the importance of an accurate differential diagnosis when a breast ulcer is observed, in order to avoid diagnostic errors, prevent inappropriate treatments, and reduce the risk of serious functional and aesthetic consequences for the patient

    No full text

Between Qualitative and Quantitative: What Methodological Choices for Contemporary Sociology?

    No full text
The methodological debate between qualitative and quantitative approaches in sociology is central to understanding social phenomena. This article critically examines the strengths, limitations, and applications of these methodologies to guide researchers in selecting the most suitable approach based on research objectives and complexity. Addressing contemporary challenges such as globalization, social inequalities, and digital transformations, the article highlights the importance of methodological choices in producing robust sociological knowledge. Qualitative methods are praised for capturing the depth and contextual richness of social interactions using techniques like ethnography and life history interviews. However, their limited generalizability and susceptibility to researcher bias are acknowledged. Quantitative approaches, on the other hand, excel in analyzing large-scale trends and providing generalizable insights through methods like surveys and big data analysis. Advances such as machine learning further enhance quantitative research while raising ethical and methodological concerns. The article advocates for mixed-methods approaches, which integrate the strengths of both methodologies to address complex sociological questions comprehensively. This integration combines qualitative depth with quantitative generalizability, offering a more nuanced framework for sociological inquiry. The study concludes by urging sociologists to adopt innovative and adaptive methodological practices to meet the evolving demands of contemporary research
