    No full text
The Covid-19 pandemic has profoundly affected rural livelihoods. The loss of income and employment prospects constituted significant issues in impoverished communities in the Philippines. The economic repercussions of COVID-19 are especially concerning, given that the studied villages represent a segment of the most impoverished and vulnerable populations in the Philippines. To lessen the economic impact of Covid-19, Pagpapayabong ng Produktong Agrikultura was first launched among thirty (30) residents of Lucban, Quezon, composed of senior citizens, displaced workers, and solo parents, and consequently replicated to the twenty (20) 4P’s grantees and thirty (30) members of the Parent and Teacher Association of Paaralang Elementarya ng Lucban 7. The project was implemented and later replicated by the Southern Luzon State University in collaboration with STAARRDEC, LGU-Lucban, DepEd-Lucban, and DSWD-IVA to address the issues of food shortages and unemployment confronting the Covid-19-affected communities through the transfer of available mature agricultural technologies in farming. The goal of this project is to empower the beneficiaries to be self-sufficient in food after the pandemic and ultimately uplift the quality of their lives. Development of IEC materials, facilitation of trainings on urban gardening and SNAP hydroponics, preparation of organic fertilizers and pesticides, and distribution of farming inputs among beneficiaries were the project strategies to attain its goal. Further, marketing strategies were also integrated into the project to introduce gardening as one of the potential sources of income in the future. Project beneficiaries were highly satisfied with the overall implementation. Beneficiaries were able to establish urban gardens where they continuously grow vegetables. Research revealed that container gardening outperforms SNAP hydroponics in terms of effectiveness. However, further research on the adaptability of crops to be planted and strengthening the marketing capability of beneficiaries must be implemented

This is a qualitative study to explore the procedures on contractual payment terms of Newmont Ghana as mining companies procure their goods and services through contractors/suppliers. Interviews were conducted with the three Contracts Administrators and complemented with archival records.  The data analysis was inductive using thematic analysis from a constructivist viewpoint. The result reveals that contract requests, negotiations and evaluation were the bases for awarding a contract. The challenges have its root in non-compliance and communications gaps in the processes and procedures on contractual payment terms. The study concludes that there is a comprehensive laid-down procedure for how Newmont Ghana arrives at its payment terms. The study proposes that there must be effective coordination and collaboration between the Contracts department and the accounts payable office internally while externally Newmont must improve its supplier relationship management through best practices on account payables. Lessons learned with the prescription of four generic points to improve contractual payment terms of any organisation. This is one of the very few papers of a procedural study on contractual payment terms of contractors in the mining industry of Ghana using in-depth interviews and documentation reviews

Advanced Loan Modeling in Excel: Integrating What-If Analysis and Optimization for Smarter Lending

    No full text
In today’s volatile and data-driven financial environment, traditional static loan modeling methods are no longer sufficient to support strategic decision-making and proactive risk management. This paper explores advanced loan modeling techniques using Microsoft Excel, emphasizing the integration of What-If Analysis and optimization tools such as Scenario Manager, Goal Seek, Data Table, and Solver. These tools allow financial professionals to simulate diverse lending conditions, assess borrower-specific risk, and design optimized repayment structures that enhance affordability, mitigate risk, and boost institutional profitability. Drawing on literature and empirical studies, this paper demonstrates how dynamic, Excel-based loan models provide a scalable and accessible alternative to costly proprietary systems. Similarly, a real-world case involving a \$300,000 machinery loan is used to illustrate practical applications such as interest rate sensitivity analysis, scenario simulation under inflation and credit risk shifts, and repayment optimization. The paper also emphasizes the strategic benefits of these methods, including improved lending decisions, customer satisfaction, profitability optimization, and regulatory readiness. Moreover, the paper discusses the integration of borrower behavior and machine learning insights to enhance predictive accuracy, highlighting a broader shift toward hybrid financial modeling approaches. While Excel offers powerful and democratized modeling capabilities, challenges such as model governance, data integrity, and scalability underscore the need for complementary tools and governance frameworks. Ultimately, the paper advocates for the fusion of financial engineering principles with accessible computational tools to create adaptive, resilient, and intelligent lending strategies suited to modern financial landscapes

    No full text
Student engagement is an important latent variable that determines university student’s academic success and personal development hence drawing significant attention from researchers and educators globally. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social media usage, academic self-efficacy, grit, and student academic engagement among university students in Zambia, as well as to determine whether the variables collectively predict student academic engagement. A cross-sectional survey design was used in this study with a convenient sample of 183 (n=183). Four different Likert scale instruments were used to measure social media usage, academic self-efficacy, grit, and academic engagement. Higher reliability coefficient values for all the measuring scales in the study were found. Significant positive correlations were found among social media usage, academic self-efficacy, grit, and student academic engagement. Findings from multiple regression analysis showed that only academic self-efficacy and grit had predictive value for student academic engagement. These results suggest that academic self-efficacy and grit play a significant role in enhancing student academic engagement. To gain competitive advantage, academic institutions should tailor their learning programs in integrating grit building activities such as designing academic activities such as long-term research projects with instructors mentoring, peer feedback and check points. Grit will be developed since students would have to persist through setbacks

    No full text
For ages, potters have contributed significantly to society by creating earthen products from clay for daily use, thus keeping the pottery industry alive. Pottery has been a livelihood for many generations. In Bangladesh, the origins of pottery date back to the Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa civilizations, as evidenced by the earthenware found at the Mahasthangar excavation site in Bogra. However, this profession is currently facing numerous challenges. Modern societies have shifted their preference towards plastics and other synthetic materials, leading to a declining demand for pottery products. Additionally, the lack of support and initiatives to promote pottery is causing this traditional craft to fade from society, leaving those involved in the profession to lead miserable lives. This research utilized a qualitative approach, with case studies being the primary data collection method. The findings indicate that the increasing use of plastics and aluminum products has significantly reduced interest in pottery, resulting in a decrease in potters' income and severe economic challenges. Consequently, many potters abandon their traditional profession as it no longer provides sufficient income to meet their family's basic needs. To address the current situation, the government must intervene by implementing programs and policies at the grassroots level to sustain the pottery profession and improve the livelihoods of potters
