Urbanisation and Managing Energy: Opportunities and Challenges
As the world gets increasingly urbanised, there will be a consequence for energy generation, consumption and distribution. As the world population increases, there will be an increased demand for services- healthcare, transport, housing, infrastructure, information technology among others. The growing economies like India would have even greater challenges. The choice of forms of urbanization should needs to be assessed. What kind of cities would be sustainable is a question that needs more exploration? Walkability, compact housing, sustainable transport, alternate forms of energy generation are all aspects which need to be looked into. The paper focuses on what forms of urbanisation should India look at and how energy choices should be built in the planning process
Building Consumer Loyalty - Challenge for Global E-healthcare Organizations
In this study authors provide a conceptual investigation regarding the role of consumer loyalty for e-healthcare organisations. The main aim of the article is to identify the level of consumer loyalty and factors which determine this phenomenon. Further the paper suggests a consumer loyalty model on e-healthcare market. The survey was conducted using structured questionnaire. Scale to measure each of factors in the model were developed based on previous literature and using existing scales where possible. A total of 1000 questionnaires were distributed by the Internet to the patients. The results demonstrated that level of consumer loyalty towards e-healthcare organizations is relatively low - lower than what it is, towards traditional healthcare institutions. The most important factors determining consumer loyalty in this market are: trust on ehealthcare institutions, satisfaction from e-medical services and technological factors, like security and privacy. Results of research can be applied by managers of e-healthcare organizations, particularly by departments responsible for establishing relationship with patients and IT units that are involved in the process of developing new electronic marketing channels. The target audience can be characterized as all researchers and practitioners interested in health care services and marketing issue
Emerging Technologies in Eye Sight Cor rection: Customers Perspective
LASIK (Laser in siter kerato milensis) is a form of refractive surgery which intends to correct eye sight error and reduces the need of other visual aids like glasses and contact lenses. With the emergence of latest technologies in the eye care, the aim of this paper is to explore the eye sight correction surgery: LASIK in the National Capital Region of Inida. It would further identify the market segments that have undergone the surgery or intend to do so in the future, hence highlighting the customers' perception about the same.The research explores upcoming technologies through personal interviews with Eye surgeons in the National Capital Region. The interviews specifically emphasize on the technological milestones in the eye correction area. Further, a questionnaire based survey was conducted, to evaluate customers experience and expectations from these eye care technologies. The study hence, provides a comprehensive overview of the technological high points in the eye sight correction. Also the paper focuses on the various apprehensions raised by customers relating to safety and pricing of these eye surgeries
Innovations Around Mobile Applications: Scope for Indian Developers
This paper explores innovations around mobile applications, globally, and brings out the scope for monetization of these trends, by Indian Application Developers. The paper is based on qualitative research and utilizes Content Analysis Technique for tabulating and reporting the data. A thorough literature review has been conducted to understand the innovations around mobile applications globally and to identify the top 5 categories of mobile applications. These categories serve as variables for understanding the scope for Indian mobile application developers. Data on Indian Mobile application market has been sourced from mass media: Top 3 English newspapers (Indian) and 6 online sources. Recommendations for Indian developers have been generated on the basis on data which was reported under 5 identified categories of mobile applications. Scope for Indian Mobile application developers is in (but not limited to) the following areas; Developing cloud enabled applications, developing customised Indian applications, working on innovations based on global acceptability through multi-language apps., synchronising data with backend systems and addressing security threats, reducing costs through prudent locations and newer API’s (Application Programming Interface), beta testing applications and appropriate keyword tagging for marketing and making applications oriented towards customer delight so that in the process of diffusion of the innovation, the application becomes an integral part of the customer’s life. Methodical content analysis brings out the scope for Indian application developers and offers them valuable insights on monetization tactics. Since the findings are based on published data from Indian Mass Media, it makes the paper very contemporary and the recommendations very implementable for the industry. Academicians working in this area too, will also find an avenue for further exploration. This research work is distinctive because of the lack of scholarly studies in this area, especially in the Indian context. Data from mass media and use of content analysis – a widely used qualitative analytic method for a scholarly study, increases its value by making the work recent, contemporary and worthy of further scholarly explorations
A Transition from Consumption-Dependent Development to Investment-Driven Development: A Comparison of 40 Countries
Following up the contrasting behaviors that growing economies suffer from an autarky cycle between consumption and economic growth. Advancing and advanced economies allow GDP growth for inducing investments efficiently. An empirical analysis was conducted in 40 countries, inspired by Samuelson’s multiplier-accelerator model, to examine a mechanism for switching from an autarky cycle to an investment-inducing virtuous cycle. The results suggest that a correlation between consumption growth and investment intensity is crucial to enable a shift from an autarky cycle to a virtuous cycle. The transition dynamism of economic cycles in these countries in the last three decades is also analyzed
The Positive Impact of Inter-Organizational Networking in Innovation in Biotechnology Industry: Comparative Case Analysis of Biotech Network One Nucleus
To further substantiate the role of inter-organizational networking in innovation, we explored the positive impact of large networks on innovation in the biotechnology industry. The research was conducted in two parts. In the first part, a qualitative research methodology using exploratory case study is performed on the three SME members of the UK-based biotech network One Nucleus. In the second part, a quantitative research approach using comparative empirical OECD data analysis is performed. The two research methodologies used are subsequently linked together thorough a unique research approach known as processual research. A new insight is explored regarding issues linked to inter-organizational networking, like the role of networks on organizational learning, the role of third party organizations within networks, diversity of partners and the nature of learning (localized vs. global) within biotech networks. The primary data is generated on the number of alliances, types of alliances and types of innovation, whereas innovation is measured as a dependent variable. Empirical results obtained clearly indicate that innovation output (patent approval rate, patent success rate) with respect to each alliance made by the sample firms is positively impacted by the parent biotech network One Nucleus
Towards Cost Effective Data Centers
Data Centers are sub organizations within an IT organization and form an integral part of e-enabled services infrastructure. Their effectiveness is essential for effectiveness of overall IT organization leading to efficient and effective delivery of e-services. Data Center organizations aim for Organizational Effectiveness. Many factors and measures can contribute to Organizational Effectiveness of Data Centers. This paper presents some of the findings from a research study on “Select aspects of Organizational Effectiveness of Data Centers”. As an outcome of this study, amongst other measures, Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) was derived as a critical measure for effective Data Centers. Lower TCO leads to cost effective Data Centers, leading to overall effectiveness. In this paper, we briefly introduce various measures of Data Centers’ Organizational Effectiveness and present a detailed analysis of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) as a key measure of Data Centers’ Organizational Effectiveness. We also present various factors contributing to reduced TCO and a comparison between the factors contributing to TCO for Government and Corporate Data Centers
Fusing East and West Leads a Way to Global Competitiveness in Emerging Economy: Source of China’s Conspicuous Strength in Solar Industry
In light of a conspicuous strength in China’s solar industry in recent years this paper analyzes an institutional source of its strength. Empirical analysis was conducted focusing on the interaction between indigenous semiconductor industry (“East”) and newly emerging solar industry in absorption of global best practices (“West”) thereby fusion between them was demonstrated. Success of this fusion can be attributed to a joint work between industry’s intensive effort in learning global best practices for exploring new business and government’s catalytic role for the attainment of decarbonisation society for nation’s sustainability. This suggests a new insight for growing economy for its development of global competitive industry
Government Initiatives for Developing Technologies in Public Research Institutes through Strategic Relationship with Industry
The relationship between The country that facilitates strategic relationships among research institutes and industries, through appropriate mechanisms, gains a competitive edge through faster technology development, transfer and commercialization. Successful technology development and transfer, needs early identification of potential technologies and assessment of their commercial potential. This study examines various models for technology selection and technology development available in the literature. Also, this communication presents various government initiatives that promote technology development, transfer and commercialization in Indian public research institutes. These initiatives try to bridge the gap between research institutes and industry and help research institutes to commercialize the technologies emanating from it. Important initiatives and their implementation were identified using an explorative study through a review of secondary sources and websites of concerned government departments
Innovation through Emergence of Technology Communities: Some Management Lessons
Networks play a key role in developing next generation innovations. Technology led innovations are led by technology developers and communities. There is an evidence of success of innovations in technology development through networking with technology communities. Some of these are formal networks and some of these are informal networks. This paper explores at some of the successful developments in the technology domains such as development of Android applications and I-phone applications. Each of these interventions involved collaborations between academic communities, corporate firms as well as independent technical professionals. The success of Apple and Android communities opens up many new research questions as both the organizations have followed a very different approach in developing new technologies. Android which is developed by Google has followed a different approach as compared to development of Apple applications. The paper would throw insights into these approaches. Some of the technology communities had a more open approach and some of the communities have a more closed approach. This paper documents the differences in approaches of development of these communities. The paper is a qualitative study which provides an insight into the differences in approach of development of select technology communities. The paper also draws leadership lessons and factors which contribute to the success of such initiatives. The paper assesses the challenges that these firms faced in developing such communities
