Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity of Multi-Cultural Text Using Critical Race Theory in a 21st Century Classroom: Equitable or Hindrance?

Education has always understood racial and ethnic lines, teaching them in a K-12 classrooms. Teaching about the civil war to the civil rights and everything in between, students gain foundational understanding in terms of the treatment of a culture or race versus the others. Looking at other races, we can also understand the troubles that they also go through and look at them in a comparative manner to formulate and evaluate our understanding of history. Further, looking at texts from various perspectives in terms of race, ethnicity, and cultural background aids in the comprehension of perspective. By reading multiple views on a black perspective, or a Native American perspective, students see various aspects within the cultures. Looking through autoethnographic terms, we can see the creation of critical race theory and how it creates a negative connotation for ethnic literary lenses. By taking this away from the classroom and our students, we are not teaching them about our nation’s history which in turn is hindering both the students, and our nation.Master ArtsEnglishCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio

    The Violence Against Sex Workers

    No full text
Violence towards sex workers is an issue that plagues this country. The United States has a bias against anything that has to do with taboo subjects. Sex work is a profession that has a bad reputation and because of that, and the fact that anything that has to do with sex is taboo, the men and women involved are seen as "lesser." The police and society tend to care less about them. This paper dives into the issues that follow the bias and the violence that follows this job

Alabama’s Civilian Conservation Corps: The Political, Social, and Economic Impacts of Roosevelt’s Tree Army

    No full text
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was one of the most successful New Deal programs in the state of Alabama, yet little research exists that explores the social, economic, and political impact its existence had across the state. Even less historical literature exists that discusses the experiences of the Black community and the influence of segregation in the implementation of the CCC in Alabama. The CCC not only challenged political and social standards that perpetuated racial prejudice, but it also provided substantial economic relief to many Alabamians and created a legacy of environmental and natural resource sustainability and appreciation. This project will provide a much-needed addition to both state history and Black history and will broaden the current literature on the CCC nationally. The chapters contained in this project provide contextual and foundational narratives, explain the impact of the CCC from social, political, and economic perspectives, and survey the implications of the program in relation to its impact on the Black community. Throughout the research process, a variety of primary and secondary sources were consulted to ensure that a comprehensive perspective of the CCC in Alabama is communicated effectively. Each of the sources have been audited for credibility, reliability, bias, argument strength, and use of primary source material. Each source was also evaluated in terms of perspective and historical lenses used to state their arguments, as well as relevancy to the topic of this project. Sources that vary from or even contradict the argument this project intends to make were not eliminated from the selected source materials. Including these sources potentially eliminates any misinterpretation or exclusion of primary materials that may alter the expected outcome of this research project. Ultimately, this research project seeks to fill a gap in the current historiography of the CCC in Alabama which is limited and excludes the perspectives of Black corpsmen.Master ArtsHistoryCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio

Racial Discrimination Within the Criminal Justice System

While the criminal justice system is theorized, framed, and practiced by most to be "equal for all", the justice system has in practice shown racial discrimination within numerous aspects of our system; both on a state and federal level that prevent our system from functioning in its true intent. From stricter bail restrictions to harsh criminal penalties that lead to longer incarceration rates, the ways in which racial discrimination negatively affects the already questionable criminal justice system plays a consequence within society. Aspects that affect our everyday life and society, such as prison populations; paint the way in which our system has functioned but also has highlighted the distinction in our system: from how we think of it versus what we perceive of it once we see it in action

Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Exploring how Nature & Nurture Interact to Display Various Disorders

~ This is a supplemental research paper that was not presented at UG research day but it is being included in this collection as it represents student research. ~ Neurodevelopmental disorders are some of the most complex forms of neurodiversity in children. This phenomenon originates from disabilities and abnormalities directly related to the body's nervous system and brain. Given the symptoms associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, there are subsequent behavioral and intellectual specific problems that commonly arise. The long debated psychological theory of nature vs nurture provides a perfect explanation for how these two individual concepts work as one cohesive unit throughout the development of any child. More specifically, this theory is essential when investigating the roots of various neurodevelopmental disorders in children as well

Latina Voices, the Immigrant Experience and the Missing Stories in American Literature

Latina/Chicana stories in American literature are important to understand contemporary America as a multicultural society. However, Chicana/Latina literature is not considered part of mainstream American literature. Previous papers regarding this topic have brought up challenges that Latina/Chicana literature confronted in the space of American literature. The absence of Latina/Chicana stories in American life has affected the development of immigrants and their children’s identity. This paper explores and suggests the importance of Latina/Chicana stories in America from the perspective of Chicana/Latina writers. Looking at the text through Feminist and Marxist lenses highlights the problems that ultimately marginalize Latina/Chicana writers. Their stories are rooted in economic and gender inequalities in America and in their countries of Origin/Heritage. The Autoethnography method provides the narrative of the author’s personal experience as a Latina/Chicana developing her identity as a guiding point to display the need of advancing the growth of multicultural American literature.Master ArtsEnglishCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio
