    Special Education Students in the General Classroom in Spain

    The education laws in Spain are moving towards an inclusion process, where special education students are being integrated into the general education classrooms. Educators in Spain are not prepared to have students with disabilities in their classrooms, and they are looking for resources and tools to do so. Using Liberatory Design Thinking, this project aims at finding a solution that works for educators in Spain to learn how to teach all students in their general education classrooms

    Literary Evolution: How Technology Can (and Will) Enhance Literary Scholarship

    The impact of computer technology on the creation of the written word is something apparent in the multitude of available e-books, blogs, and collaborative writing sites that populate the internet. Existing and emerging technologies are starting to change not only the format of what is written, but the content and context of modern literature as well. For the Literary scholar the opportunity to explore writings that would not have seen public release without the rise of electronic publishing is both exciting and terrifying. Contemporary and future scholars need to be cognizant of the role that software, format, and electracy played in the creation of a given text. This project examined the secondary skills necessary for the modern literary scholar to assess the increasingly populous textual landscape and make sense of the wealth of secondary and tertiary information available. Computer driven research methods like topic modeling and data mining were explored as they have been used by those in the humanities to study both current and historical works in new and exciting ways. In the case study for this project, Omar Robert Hamilton’s The City Always Wins was examined in the context of the secondary media that applies to the primary text. Because Hamilton’s novel is set during, and primarily focused on, the Arab Spring protests that took place in Cairo in 2011, this analysis incorporated information found in non-literary sources like YouTube videos, news articles, and social media artifacts of the period. By incorporating additional sources, this paper brought lite to how Hamilton’s novel reflects both the ever-present civil unrest in 2011 Egypt and the growing importance of digital literacy to the development of a well informed and ideologically aligned population.Master ArtsEnglishCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio

    Comics Literature to the Rescue: Multimodal Theory within Composition Literature Classrooms

    A top priority for community colleges is ensuring student retention and overall academic success, and core class requirements bear the responsibility of ensuring this. Degree demographics from Three Rivers Community college in Norwich, Ct were analyzed to show that the majority of students on this campus will be required to enroll within the ENG 102- Composition and Literature course in order to graduate, making this course a key area to ensure that student engagement and retention is at its peak efficiency. However, students are often not connecting with literature in the classroom, leading to low student engagement and contrasting the objectives of this course. After reviewing numerous academic texts and pairing them with respective comics literature, this study confirms that comics literature is an exemplary tool to mitigate growing ambivalence in students while still ensuring that course objectives can be met. This is due to comics literature’s ability to maximize multimodal elements. Multimodal theory is meeting the needs of students who are acclimated to digital technology while also providing an environment that allows for a new academic structure found within on-campus classrooms and online to adapt. This study looks at various elements found unique to comics literature structure. It also looks at literary genres and how they appear in the text and applies traditional literary theories taught in current classrooms. Finally, sample discussion questions, assignments, and essay prompts are provided to show the practicality of implementing multimodal theory and comics literature into a Composition and Literature course.Master ArtsEnglishCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio

    Belorussian Forest Camps Jewish Resistance during World War II

    During World War II the Nazi Party attempted to ethnically cleanse Europe of its population of Jewish people as well as starve and resettle the non-Jewish people of Eastern Europe. To achieve the annihilation of the Jews Nazis first forced whole communities into ghettos and from there into concentration camps, both death camps and work camps, with the intention of everyone eventually dying. Although this assault was brutal on both Jewish and non-Jewish populations it was not met without resistance in many places. In the eastern lands that bordered the Soviet Union Jews and non-Jews formed forest partisan groups and family camps formed along the edges of society. The forests were able to sustain life due to a variety of factors. These factors included topography, organization and resources found in the surrounding communities, backlash against the brutality of the Germans and in places lower levels of antisemitism in the local non-Jewish population. The forest partisan and family camps were strongest and most numerous in the Belorussian forests because of a special combination of these factors. The true story of the forests tells of two kinds of resistance; the active fighting of the partisans, many of whom were Jewish, and the almost unachievable act of surviving. This thesis relies on both secondary sources produced by historians through the years and memories of forest survivors in order to examine the value of each factor and its place in the story of Jewish resistance and survival in Belorussian forests during World War II.Master ArtsHistoryCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio

    Immigration, Identity, and the Caribbean Immigrant Student in the English Language Arts Classroom

    The incidence of immigration to the USA from the Caribbean region has seen a steady increase in the last few decades. As such, the number of Caribbean immigrants, in particular those of school-age, has increased exponentially. These immigrants often experience a sense of displacement and alienation as a result of being uprooted from their Caribbean culture and transplanted in a foreign one. The absence of adequate Caribbean cultural representation in mainstream society and in the schools, in particular, serves to deepen this identity crisis. However, there are a variety of ways in which this problem may be addressed and alleviated. One such way is through the expansion of the ELA curriculum to incorporate representations of Caribbean culture.     Facing Attrition: The Lived Experiences of Emerging Adult Teachers in Public Education

    This multiple case study was conducted for the purpose of exploring the developmental readiness of emerging adult teachers in relation to teacher attrition. Introduction to the notion of development in relation to teacher readiness was explored specifically in response to the rate of attrition among emerging adult teachers and the overall decline in student achievement and the perpetuations of America’s achievement and opportunity gaps. Consideration of readiness in respect to cognitive and psychological development were explored using the tenets of Jeffrey Arnett’s theory of Emerging Adulthood with a total of six study participants. Specifically, this study examined the impact of life decisions in relation to identity formation occurring between the ages of 18 and 29. With emerging adults being precariously and metaphorically affixed in a position of having one foot in adulthood and the other in adolescence, this study sought to reveal relevant factors that attributed to both the professional and personal identity of emerging adult teachers who had left the teaching profession. With the focus of this study providing a perspective for attrition- from a developmental perspective, it is hoped that the knowledge gained from this study will add to the further research and dialogue on attrition, and lead to further studies in the future focusing specifically in the area of developmental psychology.Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)School of Educatio
