Understanding online Millennial Generation students' relationship perceptions with online academic advisors
No full textThis explanatory sequential mixed methods study aims to understand the relationship perceptions of online Millennial Generation students with their online academic advisors. The study asks the question: How do online Millennial Generation students perceive their relationships with online academic advisors? This study surveyed 715 participants and interviewed seven participants from the Millennial Generation to learn their relationship perceptions with their online academic advisors. There were two phases of this mixed methods approach: quantitative and qualitative. These phases created an overall interpretation for the study, which produced four themes and three major findings. The four themes were connectivity, empathy, awareness, and encouragement. The three major findings indicated that online academic advisors are the main support system for online Millennial Generation students, online Millennial Generation students are empathetic towards their academic advisors and peers, and online Millennial Generation students appreciate their connections with their online academic advisors. A novel decision - Making model of the globalizing consumer behavior: Evidence from Chinese middle-class consumers who purchase luxury goods from overseas markets
Get PDFThe goal of this study is to propose a valuable decision-making model in examining Chinese middle-class consumer behavior, specifically the new purchasing behavior regarding luxury goods. Chinese middle-class consumers purchase seventy percentage luxury goods from oversea markets, although they are available in their domestic market. The only difference between the Chinese market and foreign markets is the price as in China, price is much higher than in other markets. However, this observation conflicts with previous theories of the luxury goods consumer behavior, such as the Veblen Effects, the Bandwagon Effect, and the Snob Effect, all of which imply luxury consumers are not price sensitive.
This study is both qualitative and quantitative as it provides a conceptual propositional model and tests it by variety of empirical regression models. The results agree with the previous research that illustrate Chinese middle-class consumers are also price insensitive to luxury goods. They are pushed out to the global market by the luxury goods companies, which attempt to limit the purchasing channels in China. (Author abstract)Liu, Y. High school experiences of transgender and gender non-conforming young adults: A reflective photovoice study
No full textIncreasing numbers of high school students are identifying openly as transgender and gender nonconforming even as they navigate violence, discrimination, and harassment from peers and others. Many of the scholarly work on trans issues in education have positioned transgender and gender nonconforming students within the larger grouping of LGBTQ individuals. The purposes of this study are to (a) to clarify and document the needs and reflective experiences of transgender and gender nonconforming youth; (b) to determine the extent to which school policies at the federal, state, and local levels are meeting those needs; and (c) to utilize input from participants in support of school, community, and policy changes. I utilized the qualitative research methodology of photovoice and aspects of phenomenology, allowing participants to tell their high school stories through photography and personal reflection. By highlighting the lived experiences and related issues facing our transgender and gender non-conforming youth, my purpose was to highlight the need for a change in policies related to transgender students in our schools. “Wade in the water”: Jim Crow scenes from Maysville, Kentucky
Get PDFThis research explores Jim Crow scholarship in real estate, entertainment, policing, and recreation. The thesis of this research is that outside forces came to bear on Jim Crow laws and customs. This research will show that without that outside pressure, a more equal society may not have evolved organically. In addition, this research highlights scenes from the small town of Maysville, Kentucky to more fully illustrate the power and tenacity of Jim Crow. This research is not meant to belittle the efforts of thousands of brave Americans, of all colors, who risked and sometimes lost their lives in the face of racial bigotry and oppression. It is rather to suggest that without the full power of the federal government behind them, their heroic struggle might not have happened and most certainly would have been more burdensome.
The methodology employed in this project was to locate primary and secondary sources related to the topic and apply those sources to the central argument of the thesis. These sources were used to gain an understanding of Jim Crow as a social and political phenomenon and demonstrate that Jim Crow was so engrained into the fabric of American life that it took a national effort spearheaded by all three branches of the federal government to wrench it away from the American experience. Applying linear algebra to image deblurring
Get PDFThis thesis expands on the concepts taught in Applied Linear Algebra (MAT-350), using singular value decomposition (SVD) and discrete cosine transform (DCT), with a focus on image deblurring. The principles discussed throughout this thesis were guided by the readings of Deblurring Images Matrices, Spectra, and Filtering by Christian Hansen, James Nagy, and Dianne O’Leary. The thesis will focus on various techniques that were used to deblur an image, how the SVD and DCT were applied, and the results applied to a blurred photo. The mathematics are made easier using MATLAB’s built-in tools including: The Signal Processing Toolbox (SPT) and the Image Processing Toolbox (IPT) as well as tools created by the authors of Deblurring Images Matrices, Spectra, and Filtering. The goal of this project is to not only learn the theoretical side of the mathematics behind image deblurring, but also to write code to implement various techniques used to deblur an image. Contemplating climate change: Changing the culture of climate
Get PDFContemplating Climate Change is a proposed physical exhibit that intends to achieve the following goal: by exposing the public to the history surrounding air and water toxicity events, in addition to the history of greenhouse gas emissions, the exhibit will inspire people to believe in the reality of climate change and spur them to action. The information will be presented in the special exhibit space of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) beginning the first week in January of 2021. The physical exhibit is intended to run for two years. Utilizing the digitization and mapping technology already in possession of the NMNH, Contemplating Climate Change will also be available online as a virtual tour. All images and artifacts included in this proposal have either been approved for use via the institution, paid for with subscription, or fall under the Fair Use doctrine of the United States which allows the use of copyrighted material for the intent of educational progress in nonprofit institutions such as Southern New Hampshire University and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Newspapers.com makes newspapers available for the purpose of historical research, which is the intention of their inclusion within this paper. According to Getty images, their work can be included in this project stating, “Through the use of images, you can illustrate a concept, prove a point or inspire others to make their own works.
