The influence of social media on the Hilton brand
Get PDFSocial media is a collection of social networking platforms where people can connect, share and express themselves. These applications can easily be used in marketing campaigns by hospitality businesses. Social media is a marketing strategy that allows brands to set themselves apart from the competition based on the content that they post and share. Each social media application has strengths and weaknesses, which is why it is beneficial for companies to use a multi-platform marketing strategy to convey different content, but the same message. These platforms can be especially useful for the hospitality industry whose main focus is to sell an experience, quality service and lodging. The Hilton Company is comprised of many brands that each offer unique amenities. Accommodations can be a large portion of a travel budget for many people, so it is crucial for the guest to understand all of the benefits and features of their selected hotel. This paper will examine five popular social media platforms and how Hilton is using brand specific accounts to attract guests and how effectively the social media apps are being used. The effectiveness will be determined by monitoring the types of posts and engagement on each brand-specific page on each of the five platforms previously discussed. The paper will conclude in a comparison between the three Hilton brands to see which brand is most effective at using social media to create engagement, build brand value and create sales. Cohesion and sport teams success
Get PDFCohesion can play multiple roles on a sports team allowing them to either flourish or fail during their season. The purpose of this research is to discuss how cohesion and conformity lead to a team’s success and/or failure. By understanding cohesion, a sports team can become successful in their present and future endeavors. There are two types of cohesion, task and social; when each are used together it can help a sports team achieve success. Cohesion can promote conformity among sport teams. There are negative aspects of conformity such as groupthink that can inhibit a sports team’s future success. Conformity can also have positive aspects such as teamthink. Teamthink is important because it can enhance a sports team effectiveness and performance. There are helping and hindering forces of cohesion that can propel a sports team forward or hold them back. Cohesion of a sports team is effective when all aspects of task cohesion, social cohesion, and teamthink are involved. A multiple case study of transformational leadership at struggling colleges
Get PDFThis qualitative multiple case study sought to understand the common factors that colleges at risk of closure have to navigate to move from struggling, to surviving, and on to thriving. The primary question for this research involved the changes, and communication and governance strategies between the president, trustees, and faculty that affected positive change at small colleges and universities who successfully transformed their organizations. Data was collected through one-on-one interviews with presidents who led each institution through transformation.
This study identified similarities and differences between the cases allowing for the examination of the phenomenon in depth, using evidence obtained from interviews with those involved (Yin, 2014). Risk of closure was defined as schools that had a simple liquidity ratio of under 5%, who then moved to a liquidity ratio of over 10%.
Findings from this study identified six themes related to leading small at-risk colleges. These factors were common among the schools studied and are areas for consideration for schools that are working to move from struggling to thriving. These themes include; transforming the dynamic between the president and board of trustees; faculty role in organizational change; a strong leadership team as part of transformation; transparency in communication with stakeholders; impact and import of decisive and entrepreneurial leadership; and leadership background. In it for the long haul: The Nashville sit-ins, pioneering non-violence training and national leadership
Get PDFThis thesis examines the Nashville Sit-Ins, which were the first to desegregate lunch counters in the south during the sit-in movement that occurred in the south in the early 1960s. Despite the outcome of the results of the sit-ins, it has been largely overlooked by scholars and historians on its importance not only to the Sit-In Movement, but Civil Rights Movement. The Nashville Sit-Ins were the first to desegregate lunch counters in the south two months before Greensboro Sit-ins desegregated their lunch counters. The main importance that came out of the Nashville Sit-Ins was the preparation and training that the student participants of the sit-ins received by the Nashville Christian Leadership Council non-violent workshops led by James Lawson and Reverend Kelly Miller Smith. Another important aspect of the Nashville Sit-Ins was the student involvement from Nashville, four historically black colleges and universities that included Fisk University, Tennessee State A&I, Meharry Medical College, and American Baptist Theological Seminary. Some of the students from those four universities included Diane Nash, Marion Berry, John Lewis, Bernard Lafayette, and James Bevel who would go on to be involved in the most important civil rights events during that time like the Freedom Riders and Selma-to-Montgomery Marches. The sources that will be used in the thesis include primary and secondary sources. These primary sources include archives, photographs, interviews, and letters while the secondary sources include books and journal articles. This thesis explore how the Nashville Christian Leadership Council pioneered non-violent workshops during the civil rights movement and how the Nashville Sit-Ins created civil rights leaders. Nurse educators' beliefs and perceptions of giving feedback in online RN-BSN programs
No full textThis exploratory quantitative study investigated nurse educator beliefs and perceptions regarding giving feedback in online RN-BSN programs. The survey was developed to discover trends among nurse educators (N=76) in attitudes towards feedback and students, use of feedback strategies for learning, and perceived characteristics of feedback used in practice. Hattie’s (2009) model of feedback provided the framework.
Key Findings: Nurse educators value the importance of feedback for student learning and success. Preferences for choice of tools to use for providing feedback trended to more traditional choices of shared documents, asynchronous tools, and email. Positive attitudes about students and feedback were identified related to student involvement and engagement, application and interest, as well as agreement with feedback. Positive attitudes regarding practice were identified including role, efficacy at the application of feedback strategies, and formatting styles. Minimum differences in beliefs and perceptions were identified when compared to education, experiences, and employment status.
Limitations: Potential sample bias as the participants were identified as educators registered to teach within Shadow Health’s RN-BSN assessment modules. The newly developed survey requires further testing for validity.
Discussion and recommendations: The results suggest that there has been movement to improve feedback practices in nursing education. Faculty development opportunities that center on strengthening use of feedback strategies and use of supportive technology will contribute to further improvement in feedback practices. Improvement in feedback strategies will contribute to the education of RN-BSN nurses to prepare them to thrive in practice within complex healthcare delivery systems. (Author abstract)Allen, C.M. The Grand Veteran Organizations and their Affiliates: Lobbyists and Revolutionaries
No full textThe Grand Army of the Republic was a critical and underappreciated organizations that historians view with a narrow lens. Organizations such as the Grand Army of the Republic, United Confederate Veterans and the women’s organizations that aligned themselves with these two veterans’ organizations developed educational curriculum and traditions that continued in contemporary schools in the United States. The GAR allowed integration, and thus a voice to African-Americans. For women had a social outlet and political influence by associating with both northern and southern veterans. Many times, these details take a back seat to the restrictions these populations faced. Civil War soldiers and veterans brought about changes to United States pension and voting policy. The Union veterans and the Women’s Relief and Corps solidified a national identity, while the UCV and the southern women created the Lost Cause which has permeated the American consciousness.
Using primary and secondary sources this paper evaluates the GAR, WRC, UCV, and the Daughters of the Confederacy and the role they had on American society. Many areas these organizations influenced continue to have major impacts on contemporary America. Get PDFThe presented thesis sought to discuss the cult of personality that surrounded Adolf Hitler and was functionally part of the Führer myth during the interwar period through a sociopolitical lens. In doing so, it addressed the public image of Hitler as he transitioned from simple orator to the head of the fascist Third Reich, through the use of propaganda and charismatic authority. Hitler had tapped into a völkisch belief in a heroic leader that predated the First World War and the distrust of the Weimar Republic and the agents of democracy that had, in the mind of many Germans, stabbed them in the back and surrendered them to hostile forces at the end of the war. Otherness as entertainment: the Victorian-era freak show and its legacy in contemporary popular culture
Get PDFThis research seeks to provide a more detailed examination of the fate of the Victorian-era freak show than provided in the historiography. The prominent contention is that once the specific maladies became known, the performers lost their draw as being mysterious and inexplicable. Consequentially, the freaks became human in the eyes of society and our ‘wonder’ was supplanted by sympathy and shame at our subjecting them to such degrading exploitation. The problem addressed in the following thesis is that there is little, if any, historical evidence to support this notion other than the conclusions drawn by a prominent sociologist. On the contrary, there exists ample evidence in the historical record that support three connected conclusions: First, the demise of the freak show cannot be divorced in the timeline from the decline of the circus and there exist numerous causal factors for the decline of both. Second, the public’s appetite for freak shows was based on spectacle and otherness and that that continues today. And the third conclusion is that of all the facets which made up the great railroad circus industry, the only one able to translate to the screen and thereby evolve to meet the requirement of modern mass media entertainment was the freak show. The circus is all but gone. The dime museums have long since faded. The freaks, however, and their varying expressions of otherness live on in contemporary popular culture. Louis Sockalexis and the right to use Native American imagery in sports: the Cleveland Indians and Chief Wahoo
Get PDFNative American imagery has been used for mascots, logos, and team names for almost two centuries. Many teams state that this is honoring the history of the Native American. Teams have utilized Native American Athletes for the reasoning behind their team name and logo. However, this imagery is often times raciest and contributes in offensive and historically inaccurate betrayals of Native Americans to be formed. The honoring of Native Americans continues to go on especially in the world of athletics, in local school districts, colleges/universities, and professional teams. This usage of Native American imagery helps to maintain the cultural and historical aspects of these important peoples.
Throughout the research many sources have been located and utilized. Local newspaper articles and other local references have been an important contribution. Over the past several decades, research has been completed in regards to Native American imagery being used for sports teams. This research has helped to support the thesis of the following paper. The following paper leaves a mark in Cultural, Social, Political, and Sports history. It has contributed to the progress that has been made in Native American sports research.
The conclusion of the following shows how important it is to honor Native Americans. It also shows the importance of the Chief Wahoo logo and the team name of the Indians to Clevelanders. The following research shows just how much Native American history and imagery has influenced the world of sports. There are aspects that should change when using these Native American images. Backwoods cures: An exploration of Southern Appalachian folk medicine
Get PDFThe people of the Southern Appalachians have a unique culture all their own. An important component of this culture can be observed in the manner in which these individuals chose to combat that enemy of all mankind: disease. A beautiful amalgamation of cultures including Cherokee, Scotch-Irish, and other European ancestries is present in this region and exhibited through the rural remedies utilizing a rich local pharmacopeia and magico-religious folklore related to healing. However, the people of the Southern Appalachians, while geographically isolated, did not exist in a vacuum. Exciting discoveries of local primary sources demonstrate the employment of contemporary medicine in tandem with what was available locally. This project also examines the utility of virtual museums. Together with the research on the subject of Southern Appalachian Folk Medicine, the research on virtual museums culminates in the creation of a digital exhibition using the Omeka exhibit building platform.
