Immersion education is an approach of using the target language as the medium through which curricular content is conveyed, to help the learners not only to strength their ability of the native language and the understating of lesson subjects, but also to acquire the proficiency in the target language and linguistic abilities in the immersion environment. To start the first English immersion education program in an affiliated elementary school of the national university, members of the Preparatory Office of the International Course in the Elementary School attached to the Faculty of Education, Kumamoto University, visited 8 model schools of the English immersion education from May 2024 to January 2025 to observe their practice. As a result, we conclude the experience of the model schools as adjusting the immerison education methods based on their real situation, establishing the two classroom teachers system and coordinators (responsible persons)in the immersion programs, combination of both English and Japanese textbooks, and conducting regular tests and English exams. On the other hand, we also observe the chanllenges in the future such as the insufficiency of English environment, limitation of the early partial immersion, the concern of maintaining the students’ cultural identity and so on.departmental bulletin pape

Teaching material development about Sakurajima volcano

To make people living in regions far from volcanoes recognize large-scale volcanic disasters as their own problem, it is necessary to increase interest in volcanoes. Sakurajima volcano, which is active daily, will become good teaching material. The volcano has been continuously active eruptive activity for 70 years since the Minamidake eruption in October 1955. Approximately 3,600 people reside on Sakurajima Island, and about 590,000 people in Kagoshima City, located roughly 4 km west across the Kagoshima-bay, coexist with the volcano. Therefore, the observation of volcanic activity and the atmospheric environment regarding Sakurajima volcano has been enhanced. We have installed fixed-point observation cameras for Sakurajima's volcanic plumes in Tarumizu City and Kagoshima City since 2006. In this paper, we summarize the volcanic plume activity of Sakurajima since 2006 using various materials such as notable eruption videos created from images taken by these cameras, and charts showing time series of ashfall amounts and SO2 concentrations, etc. graphed using observation data from public institutions.departmental bulletin pape

Health education with a view to achieving optimal sleep habits for sixth graders by reducing time on digital equipment : Learning about lifestyle habits and healthy bones based on the results of physical examination in school, and self-reflection about lifestyle habits

With a view to formulating healthy sleep habits for sixth graders,as well as spending less time on digital equipment, the children learn about the correlation between bone health and healthy daily living habits in a short time, upon collection of height/weight etc. data collected by physical examination in school,as the primary focus. The convenience of digital equipment,as well as the impact on the body,is highlighted. The students have opportunities to self-review their own daily life habits, including taking stock of the amount of time spent on digital equipment. By learning about the correlation between bone growth and healthy daily life habits, students are encouraged to make sure they get the appropriate number of sleep hours. The more they understand the correlation between bone growth and daily life habits on days off,the more they may strive to spend less time on digital equipment, possibly going to bed earlier. Meanwhile,in our present society, digital equipment is an essential element, both as one form of leisure and as a way for children to obtain more information. For these reasons it was very difficult to dramatically reduce usage time on weekdays.departmental bulletin pape

Change in Social Norms regarding Mask-Wearing and Restaurant Anti- COVID Measures in Japan : Using Survey Experiment and Discrete Choice Experiment

This paper compares three surveys conducted between December 2022 and July 2023 to analyze changes in social norms related to COVID-19. The degree to which respondents reported wearing masks in places such as parks, streets, and shopping centers decreased over time, regardless of whether there were descriptions of others wearing masks or not. However, as of July 2023, many people still indicated that they would wear a mask and did not immediately change their behavior after the official standard was relaxed. The timing and extent of the decline over time in the degree to which people thought they would wear a mask and the degree to which they reacted to those who did not wear a mask differed from place to place. Furthermore, the degree to which people thought they would wear a mask was also influenced by factors such as consideration of reactions to people not wearing masks and anxiety about COVID-19. We used a discretechoic experiment to investigate people’s evaluations of the various anti-COVID measures in restaurants and found that the evaluations declined over time. The influence of gender and age, as well as the influence of anxiety about COVID-19, affected the evaluations. Thus, social norms related to COVID-19 do not change immediately with a change in official standards alone but are intricately intertwined with people’s attitudes and feelings, as well as environmental factors. departmental bulletin pape
