The Birth of EBM: A Rhetoric of “Probabilization of Medicine”
Get PDFThis paper examines the formation of the concept of evidence-based medicine（EBM） in physician culture by analyzing articles on EBM published in medical journals between November 1992 and January 1996. The analysis focused on contestation over EBM. The results revealed that articles supporting and criticizing EBM, although seemingly at odds with each other, share a common view. In other words, together, the papers defending and denying EBM constituted a rhetoric that promoted the “probabilization of medicine”.departmental bulletin pape

Polysemy and Network Structure of the Japanese Word Chotto : An Analysis of the Corpus of Daily Japanese Conversation
Get PDFIn this paper we examine the polysemy and network structure of the Japanese word chotto from the perspective of discourse analysis and cognitive linguistics in the corpus of Japanese Daily Interaction (Gendai Nihongo Kenkyukai 2016), finding the following : 1) Of the 639 cases of chotto from the corpus, more than 40% were difficult or impossible to replace with sukoshi ‘a little’. 2) These uses making up more than 40% of chotto were analyzed in terms of what they modify, and five types were identified. 3) We analyzed these five types based on the schematic-network model, finding a structure consisting of extensions and links from the prototypical meaning of ‘small amount or low degree’. Two super-schemas were extracted at the top level in this structure: ‘restriction on the degree of modifiers’ and ‘no modified part, discourse management function’, and links between them were also identified.departmental bulletin pape
Intentional binding during restricted body movements
Get PDFIntentional binding(IB) is the phenomenon wherein the perceived time between action and the following event reduces when the event follows voluntary action. IB comprises two components: the shift of the perceived timing of the action toward the event （action binding） and that of the event toward the action （effect binding）. Previous studies have shown that older adults have specific IB. However, the underlying mechanisms are unknown. We investigated whether restricted body movements, a characteristic of older adults’ bodies, affect IB. Young participants performed a button press action with a finger to which either a straight bar (restriction condition） or movable bars (no-restriction condition） were attached and heard the sound following the action. The results showed that the restricted finger movements did not significantly change the IB but expanded the effect binding, suggesting that the body’s mobility can modulate the mechanism involved in the perceived time of the action’s consequence.departmental bulletin pape
