Relationship between resilience and subjective adjustment to the classroom in upper grades of elementary school

Recently, it has been pointed out that the number of truancy, bullying, and violence in schools is increasing, and teachers are becoming busier. There is an urgent need to propose educational methods that help children acquire the ability to cope. In recent years, psychoeducation and preventive education focusing on resilience have been attracting attention, and the purpose of this study was to create a version of the Bidimensional Resilience Scale (BRS) for elementary school students. We also aimed to clarify the relationship between resilience and classroom adjustment. The subjects were 787 4th to 6th grade elementary school students in Prefecture A. The author revised the BRS for elementary school students and administered it along with the Classroom Adjustment Scale. First, a confirmatory factor analysis of the resilience scale was conducted, and the suitability of the conventional model was confirmed for elementary school students. Furthermore, when we compared resilience based on the level of class adaptation, only “self-understanding” showed different characteristics from other factors. On the other hand, a characteristic influence of resilience was shown for each subfactor of classroom adjustment. Next, when we examined differences by grade and gender, we found that there were some factors that decreased in 6th graders in terms of resilience and classroom adjustment, and gender differences were also shown.departmental bulletin pape

Reimagining “Blackness”: Representation of Italian Ethnicity in James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room

This article explores how James Baldwin’s second novel Giovanni’s Room represents Italian ethnicity in association with racial blackness and dramatizes the complex intersection of race and ethnicity in the transatlantic context. Baldwin’s frequent portrayal of major white characters with Italian heritage supposedly stems from the fact that he was raised in ethnically diverse Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s where African Americans and Italian immigrants lived in the same blocks, and were constantly at conflict over housing, jobs, and politics. Few critics have pointed out that African-American writers preceding Baldwin were keenly aware of the intense and intimate relationship between these two groups and attempted to articulate the racial in-betweenness of Italian immigrants in their works. Baldwin followed the African-American literary practice of representing Italian ethnicity and developed his imagination by authoring a story of a passionate but failed love affair between a white American man and an Italian man living in Paris. This article contends that Giovanni’s Room reveals Baldwin’s insight into the nature of the white male identity constructed by rejecting the racial and ethnic other.departmental bulletin pape
