Development of the Theme of Race : Manuscripts of James Baldwin’s Another Country
Get PDFThis article examines the manuscripts of James Baldwin’s third novel Another Country (1962) and how he developed the theme of race in the more than decade-long process of writing and revising the novel. The working notes and manuscripts written in the late 1940s and the early 1950s show that Baldwin originally intended to write about a group of white characters with different ethnic backgrounds. His involvement in the Civil Rights movement in the late 1950s appears to have inspired him to pen the story of Rufus Scott, an African-American jazz drummer, whose premature death influences his white friends’ race consciousness. The first section of this article traces Baldwin’s manuscripts and working notes chronologically to clarify how he attempted to merge the story of the victimized African-American man into a novel revolving around white characters. The latter part focuses on the story of the interracial couple, Italian-American Vivaldo Moore and African-American Ida Scott, who struggle to come to terms with Rufus’s sudden suicide and confront the difficulty of bridging racial and ethnic boundaries that complicate their relationship. Get PDFThe purpose of the research reported in this paper was to examine the model fit of an adapted version （English-speaking population to Japanese-speaking population） of the Junior Metacognitive Awareness Inventory （JMAI; Sperling, Howard, Miller, & Murphy, 2002）. The full 18-item version of the instrument was translated and then administered to N=464 high school students. Confirmatory factor analysis（ CFA） was used to test for model fit, and the 18-item model was rejected. Following this modification indexes were used to test a series of changes in the model which arrived at an abbreviated and balanced model of two constructs measured by four items each. This model produced good fit, and is short and convenient to administer. However, the model will require further a priori testing in new samples from the same population in the future. Other implications of the research are discussed in the paper.本研究の目的は、「ジュニア層を対象とするメタ認知意識度インベントリー日本語版」（Junior Metacognitive Awareness Inventory（JMAI）: Sperling, Howard, Miller, & Murphy, 2002）のモデル適合性を検証することである。JMAI は全18 個のアンケート項目から構成される。調査は464 人の日本人高校生に実施した。モデル適合性の検証には確認的因子分析を用いた。解析で得られた結果から、JMAI のモデル適合度は不十分であることが判明した。修正指数に基づきモデルに一連の修正を加えた結果、いずれも4 つの項目を持つ2 つの構成要素から成る、バランスのとれたモデルを得ることができた。本研究において最終的に得られたこのモデルは適合度が高く、オリジナル版よりも項目数も少なく、修正版を用いての調査も短時間で可能となる。今後は新たな被験者からさらにデータを収集し検証を重ねる必要がある。departmental bulletin pape
A Research on Pottery Impressions from Xiying Site and Rongshan Site of Fujian Province, China
Get PDFBy analyzing impressions on pottery sherds excavated from Xiying site and Rongshan site in the Pingtan Island of coastal Fujian province with the ‘replica method’, we found grains of rice, foxtail millet, broomcorn millet and other kinds of grass seeds. The earliest rice husk impressions discovered on pottery sherd from Xiying site could date back to 7300BP. The present rice remains of charcoal seeds, phytoliths and pottery impressions from early Neolithic period of archaeological site at Fujian province support the hypothesis that rice was first brought into the Fujian coastal area by sea and was cultivated there during the early Neolithic period at around 7000BP. This may be related to the southward migration of rice farmers from the lower Yangtze River region due to sea-level change.departmental bulletin pape
