On Virtues and Skills
Get PDFThis paper examines the perspectives of Julia Annas and Matt Stichter on the concept of virtue as akin to or constituting a skill, highlighting their differences. Annas suggests that while virtue bears similarities to skill, it is not inherently a skill, contrasting with Stichter's assertion that virtue constitutes a skill. Furthermore, Annas defines virtue as a character trait, whereas Stichter challenges this characterization. Both philosophers agree that virtue requires practical wisdom (phronesis) but do not classify practical wisdom as a skill. Additionally, they share the view that skill does not fall under the category of character traits. Building upon these distinctions, this paper contributes to the ongoing discourse on virtue and skill by proposing that virtue encompasses elements of skill and introducing the maximal and juridical concepts of virtues.
