The Kumamoto Domain’s Ban on Tile Roofing in Japan and the Eto Family Residence
This paper explores the historical background of the construction of the Eto family residence, a nationally designated important cultural property located in Shimojinnai, Ozumachi, Kikuchi-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture. The Eto family residence was severely damaged by the Kumamoto earthquake in April 2016. Since that year, disaster restoration work has been ongoing, continuing until 2023. The original manuscript of this article was written for publication in the “Report on the Conservation and Repair of the Main Building of the Eto Family Residence and Six Other Important Cultural Properties (Disaster Restoration)” (The Japan Cultural Heritage Consultancy, June 2023) ; however, as a result of the abstract being published in said report, the author has decided to expand upon and revise the original manuscript for submission to this journal. On beginning this study, the author researched the history of the Eto family and determined that the house was built at a time when the Eto family was at the peak of its rise in social status. At the same time, attention was drawn to the fact that the Kumamoto clan government had previously issued a ban on tile-thatching. This is because the Eto family residence was regarded as being outside the scope of this prohibition; thus, tiled roof construction was permitted. In light of these circumstances, in 1826, Sadanosuke Eto submitted an application to the Koshi county commissioner, requesting permission to build the Eto family residence with a tiled roof, based first on “fire precautions” and, second, on “the difficulty of obtaining kaya (miscanthus sinensis),” and the application was actually approved. He pointed out that the reason for this was the close relationship between the Eto family and the Hosokawa family, the lords of the Kumamoto domain. We then concluded this study by referring to the degree of economic development of the Kumamoto domain society in the mid-to-late modern period.departmental bulletin pape
A Developmental Model of Juvenile Child Molester : Focusing on attachment
In recent years, there has been increasing concern about juvenile sex offenders and the need for intervention support for them. However, reports on their treatment effectiveness are mixed. This paper reviews previous research conducted on the classification of juvenile sex offenders. It examines whether the existence of subtypes of juvenile sex offenders can explain the variation in treatment effectiveness. We found the groups of juvenile sex offenders for whom conventional treatment is effective and ineffective. We then construct a developmental model of juvenile child molesters. Juvenile child molesters have attachment problems and seek to feel secure in their relationships with younger children who are less likely to be a threat when they reach adolescence.departmental bulletin pape
