Research Trends on Sludge and Dark Nudges in Influencing Human Decision-Making
Background: Nudges are behavioral science tools designed to guide individuals toward better decisions. However, sludge and dark nudges?their harmful counterparts?obstruct rational decision-making or exploit cognitive biases. Sludge creates unnecessary barriers, while dark nudges manipulate individuals into choices that favor industries over consumers. This study reviews recent trends in sludge and dark nudges, examining their impact on consumer behavior, and highlights the need for policy interventions to protect autonomy and well-being.
Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and CiNii, focusing on studies up to September 2024. The selection process was not industry-specific but rather based on articles that provided detailed examples of sludges. From over 40 studies identified, six were chosen for their clear descriptions of sludge mechanisms affecting decision-making in various sectors.
Results: The six targeted papers all focused on the private industry sector and online sludge (dark nudges). Among them, alcohol companies use misleading health messaging and complex website designs to obscure risks, encouraging higher consumption. Dark nudges manipulate users by promoting social norms around drinking while making health warnings hard to find. In the food sector, AI-driven nudges manipulate product visibility and encourage bundled purchases, often steering consumers toward unhealthy choices. These strategies exploit consumer vulnerabilities, particularly online, leading to uninformed decisions.
Conclusion: Sludge and dark nudges undermine consumer autonomy and pose significant public health risks. As their use expands, particularly in digital environments, stricter regulations are urgently needed to protect consumers from manipulative practices that exploit cognitive biases and hinder informed decision-making.departmental bulletin pape
“Come, You Spirits” : The Intersection of the Succubus and the One-Sex Model in Macbeth
This paper examines the recurring metaphors of sexual impotence and masturbation in Macbeth through two intellectual frameworks: the unique anatomical theories of the Renaissance and the witchcraft theories that James I adopted from the continent. The succubus-like imagery of the witches presented at the beginning of the play and the lines repeatedly suggesting Macbeth’s sexual impotence by the Macbeths highlight how the theme of “barren kingship” is expressed through metaphors of sexual desire. Particularly, the obsessions with masculinity and femininity can be interpreted, not merely as issues of gender roles, but as processes of reproductive dysfunction, in light of the contemporary concept of sexual fluidity within the one-sex model. Furthermore, Macbeth’s lines suggesting masturbatory desires symbolize the waste of bodily fluids/semen unrelated to reproduction, portraying Macbeth as a “deficient” individual incapable of producing heirs, both in terms of royal succession and family lineage.departmental bulletin pape

departmental bulletin pape

Potential of data in education for curriculum evaluation
This paper examines how data in education can be utilized for curriculum evaluation in Japanese primary and secondary schools by organizing such data within the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, and Product) model. Building on current national initiatives in education DX, it clarifies the scope of data in education, and argues that curriculum evaluation is a value judgment grounded in evidence while oriented to both improvement and accountability. The study proposes a correspondence framework that links typical evaluation questions in each CIPP phase to concrete data sources and feasible analytic methods. Context evaluation uses pre-existing administrative and school data to prioritize needs. Input evaluation assesses the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of plans using staffing, scheduling, and alignment with national curricula. Process evaluation monitors implementation with activity logs and observational records. Product evaluation triangulates test scores, performance tasks, portfolios, costs, and unintended effects to judge outcomes and sustainability. The paper emphasizes that data use is a means to inform (rather than replace) teachers’ professional judgment, and it outlines operational considerations. Future work is identified in (a) identifying data definitions and keys to operationalize the framework in schools, (b) designing evaluation criteria that balance locally meaningful judgments with cross-school comparability, and (c) articulating interdependencies across CIPP phases to support cyclical, evidence-informed improvement.departmental bulletin pape
