    EVALUATION OF HEAVY METALS (Cu, Zn, Pb) UPTAKE IN CARROT AND ASSOCIATED HEALTH RISK

    The escalating levels of heavy metals in soil, attributed to diverse sources, pose a pressing concern for human and animal health through their entry into the food chain. This study aimed to evaluate the uptake behavior of Cu, Zn, and Pb in carrots grown in different levels of contaminated soil (control, 30, 60, 90, 120 ppm) and to assess the associated health risks to mitigate the enrichment of heavy metals. The pot study revealed distinct trends in the bioaccumulation of these metals within the carrot plants, with Zn exhibiting the highest uptake, followed by Cu and Pb. Results demonstrated varying ranges of metal concentrations in the carrot plants, at 120 ppm soil contamination level, Zn, Cu, and Pb concentrations in the edible part of the carrot measured 59.7, 27.5, and 2.5 mg kg-1, respectively, surpassing WHO limits. Bioaccumulation factor spanning from 0.3 to 0.6 for Cu, 0.3 to 0.8 for Zn, and 0 to 0.4 for Pb, indicating differential uptake behaviors among these metals. Health risk index (< 1) indicated that immediate health risks were not significant but highlighting potential risks with long-term exposure. Notably, the side roots of the carrot plant exhibited higher metal concentrations, underscoring the importance of consuming washed and peeled carrots. This study emphasizes the implementation of preventive measures, such as optimal soil zone management and regular monitoring of soil and crop metal concentrations, to mitigate the adverse effects of heavy metal toxicity.Journal of Japan Society of Civil Engineers, 12(2), art. no. 24-27052; 2025journal articl

    Recruitment and Work Conditions of Factory Workers in Thailand

    This study investigates the current working conditions of factory production workers in Thailand. We used information obtained from job offers posted around Bangpu Industrial Estate, Samut Prakan Province, Thailand. We obtained the following results: First, the target companies tend to prefer either males or ignore workers’ gender. Second, Junior high school or high school grads aged between 18 and 40 meet companies’ demands. Third, workers’ wages are comprised of low base payments, small diligences, and overwork allowances. Considering legal working hours, workers need to add two or three hours to fulfil their desirable wages. The results suggest that companies appear to remain limited by their range of preferences for workers’ traits, even though they have faced shortages in managers and technical staff.経営と経済, 104(3-4), pp.53-66; 2025departmental bulletin pape

    Fe–Pt films prepared from plating baths containing glycine as a complexing agent

    We have reported Fe–Pt films with hard magnetic properties electroplated from plating baths using citric acid as a complexing agent. The present study focuses on glycine as a new complexing agent instead of citric acid. We developed an electroplating process of Fe–Pt films using glycine-based plating baths and then investigated the effect of Cl ions on the coercivity. High coercivity could be obtained around the film’s composition of Fe50Pt50, and the obtained value (∼1000 kA/m) was almost the same as that in the previous study of the citric acid-based plating bath. The amount of glycine slightly affected the coercivity and the Fe content in the film, and under our experimental conditions, 20g/l of glycine was effective in obtaining a high coercivity. From the investigations of the effect of Cl ions on coercivity, we confirmed that the coercivity reduction by the presence of the Cl ions does not depend on the complexing agent and concluded that complexing agents are not a factor in the decrease of coercivity by the presence of the Cl ions in the baths.AIP Advances, 15(3), art. no. 035020; 2025journal articl

    The role of note-taking in listen-to-summarize tasks and its cognitive processes

    In recent years, more integrated tasks have been included in language proficiency tests such as TOEFL and IELTS. Currently, the number of integrated tasks research is still limited, and most of the present studies are focused on the productive skills involved. Thus, the role of listening comprehension is still mostly unexamined (e.g., Rukthong & Brunfaut, 2020). To gain more insight into listening comprehension processes during the completion of listen-to-summarize tasks, we conducted testing among 20 university students with English proficiency ranging from A2 to C1 levels according to CEFR. All participants completed two listen-to-summarize (LTS) tasks using two levels of EIKEN test items. A mixed-methods approach was employed with an eye-tracking device to collect gaze data and keystroke loggings to gain more insight into participants’ writing processes. A survey and follow-up interviews were conducted to deepen the understanding of participants’ listening and general task-completion processes. This study focuses primarily on the results of qualitative analysis of the study. So far, we have found significant eye-movement differences between successful and unsuccessful participants during the summary writing stage, especially in how they viewed the keyboard and screen. Additionally, successful test-takers had a distinct pattern of engaging with notes during the listening and writing phases, indicative of selective attention for inferencing information that mirrors high-level metacognitive processing. Thus, higher-quality note-taking appears to be a predictor of better-written summaries in this test format: even if participants stated that they could not hear or understand certain parts of listening materials, they were still able to produce good summaries if they had good notes. Participants who received high scores for their essay summaries tended to write generative notes that involved generating test-takers’ own reproduction and interpretation of the information being heard and showed understanding of the main themes and general structure of listening materials.多文化社会研究, 11, pp.297-319; 2025departmental bulletin pape

    Comparison of the inhibitory effects of tooth brushing and povidone-iodine mouthwash on salivary bacterial counts in patients undergoing surgery for malignant solid tumors other than head and neck cancers

    Background/purpose: Infectious complications after invasive surgeries may originate from oral sources through either hematogenous infection or direct exposure to salivary bacteria. Perioperative oral management aims to remove oral foci of infection. However, the type of oral care that can reduce the salivary bacterial load remains unclear. This study aimed to identify factors influencing salivary bacterial counts during the perioperative period in patients with malignant tumors and to evaluate the effectiveness of tooth brushing and povidone-iodine mouthwash in reducing oral bacterial counts. Materials and methods: Patients aged ≥18 years who underwent surgery under general anesthesia for malignant solid tumors other than head and neck cancer were included. Participants were randomly assigned to the brushing or povidone-iodine mouthwash groups. Factors such as sex, age, primary disease, preoperative blood-test results, oral functional metrics, and salivary bacterial counts were analyzed. Saliva samples were collected before and on the day after surgery, both before and after oral-care interventions. The total bacterial and streptococcal counts were determined using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and delayed real-time PCR was used to determine the viable bacterial count. Results: Postoperatively, the salivary bacterial counts increased slightly. Significant factors affecting postoperative bacterial counts included high preoperative counts and postoperative fasting status. Brushing increased salivary bacterial counts, whereas the povidone-iodine mouthwash decreased them. Conclusion: Poor preoperative oral hygiene and postoperative fasting were significantly associated with increased salivary bacterial counts. The povidone-iodine mouthwash reduced postoperative bacterial counts, indicating its effectiveness as a perioperative oral-care method.Journal of Dental Sciences, 20(2), pp.854-861; 2025journal articl

    Experimental insights into anchorage performance of en-echelon joints under cyclic shear loading

    Understanding the anchorage performance of en-echelon joints under cyclic shear loading is crucial for optimizing support strategies in jointed rock masses. This study examines the anchorage effects on en-echelon joints with various orientations using laboratory cyclic shear tests. By comparing unbolted and bolted en-echelon joints, we analyze shear zone damage, shear properties, dilatancy, energy absorption, and acoustic emission characteristics to evaluate anchoring effects across shear cycles and joint orientations. Results reveal that bolted en-echelon joints experience more severe shear zone damage after cycles, with bolt deformation correlating to shear zone width. Bolted en-echelon joints exhibit faster shear strength deterioration and higher cumulative strength loss compared to unbolted ones, with losses ranging from 20.04% to 72.76%. The compressibility of en-echelon joints reduces the anchoring effect during shear cycles, leading to lower shear strength of bolted en-echelon joints in later stages of shear cycles compared to unbolted ones. Bolts reinforce en-echelon joints more effectively at non-positive angles, with the best performance observed at 0° and –60°. Anchorage accelerates the transition from rolling friction to sliding friction in the shear zone, enhancing energy absorption, which is crucial for rock projects under dynamic shear loading. Additionally, rock bolts expedite the transition of the cumulative AE hits and cumulative AE energy curves from rapid to steady growth, indicating that strong bolt-rock interactions accelerate crack initiation, propagation, and energy release.International Journal of Mining Science and Technology, 35(3), pp.399-416; 2025journal articl

Whilst the fundamental principles―protection of competitive processes, emphasis upon substantial ef­fects, and federal supremacy―remain unchanged, the methods of analysis have undergone considerable transformation. Market defi­nition has advanced from self-­evident competition to elaborate economic analysis. The theory of harm has developed from simple hori­zontal consolidation to complex examination of data feedback mechanisms and two­-sided markets. The assessment of consumer harm now encompasses manifold dimensions.
