Exercise-associated Hyponatremia Developing Immediately after a Musical Stage Performance in a Healthy Actress
Exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) is a life-threatening dilutional hyponatremia that typically occurs during or immediately after exercise in endurance athletes. A 49-year-old actress experienced dizziness 15 min after a 2-h stage performance while drinking several bottles of water. Thirty minutes later, the patient fell unconscious and was hospitalized. On admission, she showed dilutional hyponatremia (117 mmol/L) with extremely elevated arginine vasopressin (11.3 pg/mL). After initial treatment with 3% saline, her sodium levels immediately increased, and she recovered consciousness without developing subsequent osmotic demyelination syndrome. This case emphasizes the need for caution against excessive fluid intake during and/or after exercise to avoid EAH, even in non-athletes.Internal Medicine, 64(5), pp. 735-740; 2025journal articl
APPLICATION OF BIOCHAR AND PLASTIC CHAR TO INCREASE AGRICULTURAL SOIL FERTILITY AND EVALUATION OF PLANT (SPINACH) GROWTH
The decrease in soil fertility due to natural and anthropogenic factors has reduced crop growth and yield. The use of carbon-rich amendments in soil, such as biochar and plastic char, increases soil fertility, thereby promoting crop growth. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of biochar and plastic char on spinach growth. A pot experiment was conducted in two phases (namely, the first and second experiments). The soil was treated with (1) biochar (B), (2) plastic char (P), and (3) a mixture of B and P (B+P). A total of five treatment rates for each phase (first phase: 1 t/ha, 5 t/ha, 10 t/ha, 15 t/ha, and 20 t/ha, and 2nd phase: 0.2 t/ha, 0.4 t/ha, 0.6 t/ha, 0.8 t/ha, and 1 t/ha) were applied including control. The second experiment was conducted because the first experiment failed to identify the minimum amount required for treatment. In each treatment, the soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total organic carbon (TOC), water holding capacity (WHC), and fresh weight biomass (FWB) significantly increased in the treated soil compared with the control. The results indicated that plastic char treatment has a significant effect on the growth of spinach. However, despite performing the two experiments, we still could not determine the minimum amount required for treatment because even the lowest treatment rate increased the soil pH, EC, TOC, WHC, and FWB of spinach. Since the treatment with plastic char alone showed the best outcomes, namely, a twofold increase in crop yield and FWB of spinach, we suggest that plastic char is an effective alternative to biochar as a soil amendment.Journal of Japan Society of Civil Engineers, 12(2), art. no. 24-27045; 2025journal articl

ベトナム・フーラン焼の発展過程と製品分類-900年の歴史を未来へ紡ぐやきもの-
Phu Lang ceramics, with a heritage of over 900 years, is renowned for its distinctive pottery that highlights traditional Vietnamese craftsmanship. Located in Bac Ninh province, the village produces a diverse array of ceramic items, including functional household goods and decorative pieces. The ceramics are distinguished by their warm, earthy tones―such as rich browns, yellows, and reds―achieved through high-temperature kiln firing. This process involves using locally sourced clay, which is hand-shaped or wheel-thrown by skilled artisans. Unlike other pottery traditions, Phù Lãng ceramics feature unique natural glazes and intricate hand-carved designs that reflect both the artistry and cultural heritage of the region. Phu Lang produces a variety of products, including jars, vases, bowls, and teapots, as well as more elaborate decorative items like figurines and sculptural pieces. Each piece is meticulously crafted, combining traditional techniques with artisanal innovation. The village’s distinctive approach to glazing and carving sets Phu Lang ceramics apart from other pottery styles, preserving its rich cultural legacy while continuing to captivate both local and international audiences.多文化社会研究, 11, pp.321-346; 2025departmental bulletin pape
The effect of ionizing radiation on testicular interstitial stromal cells
Purpose: Testis is one of the most radiosensitive tissues. Interstitial stromal cells play a supportive role in male fertility, but radiation-induced damage to those cells has not yet been well understood. We aimed to investigate radiation-induced changes in interstitial stromal cells in the testis. Methods: Adult male C57BL/6N mice (8 weeks) received a single pelvic exposure to a relatively high dose (1 Gy) or a very high dose (8 Gy) X-ray. We collected the testicular tissues for evaluation at 1, 9, and 60 days after irradiation. Results: We detected a recoverable moderate degeneration of seminiferous tubules after 1 Gy exposure but an irreversible severe damage to the testis after 8 Gy exposure. Immunostaining results revealed that 1 Gy exposure induced DNA damage at day 1, upregulated intratubular GDNF at days 1 and 9, upregulated FGF at all time points, and upregulated CSF-1R at day 9. In contrast, 8 Gy exposure induced DNA damage at days 1 and 9, upregulated intratubular GDNF at days 1 and 9, downregulated CD105 at day 60, and upregulated FGF at all time points. Conclusion: Radiation-induced dynamic changes to interstitial stromal cells in the testis. Upregulated interstitial CSF-1R and FGF2 may support spermatogenesis recovery after high-dose radiation.Reproductive Medicine and Biology, 24(1), art. no. e12639; 2025journal articl
Toll-like Receptor Gene Polymorphisms as Predictive Biomarkers for Response to Infliximab in Japanese Patients with Crohn’s Disease
Objectives: To explore the possible relationship between Toll-like receptor (TLR) gene encoding and a predictive outcome for the loss of response (LOR) to IFX treatment among Japanese patients with Crohn’s disease (CD). Methods: An association analysis that involved 25 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the TLR1, TLR2, TLR4, TLR6, TLR9, and TLR10 genes was performed on a cohort of 127 Japanese patients with CD. The therapeutic responses were evaluated at 10 weeks, 1 year, and 2 years using three different inheritance models. Results: The CD patients with a G/G genotype of rs5743565 in TLR1 were significantly less likely in the responders at 10 weeks compared with the non-responders (p = 0.023, OR = 0.206). The frequencies of the C/T or T/T genotypes of rs5743604 in the TLR1, G/A, or A/A genotypes of rs13105517 in TLR2, both in the minor allele dominant model, were significantly higher in the responders at 10 weeks as compared with those in the non-responders (p = 0.035, OR = 4.401; p = 0.017, OR = 5.473). The patients with an A/A genotype of rs13105517 in TLR2 in the minor allele recessive model were significantly less likely in the responders at one year of IFX treatment compared with those in the non-responders (p = 0.004, OR = 0.195). Conclusions: The polymorphisms of TLR1 and TLR2 can be useful as biomarkers for predicting initial and secondary LOR to IFX in Japanese CD patients. The IFX response in genetic testing may target molecules for new drugs to overcome the non-response and LOR to IFX.Diagnostics, 15(8), art. no. 971; 2025journal articl
Pemafibrate Reduced Liver Stiffness in Patients with Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease Complicated with Hyperlipidemia and Liver Fibrosis with a Fibrosis-4 Index Above 1.3
Objective: To evaluate the effect of pemafibrate (PEM) on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 43 patients with hyperlipidemia and MASLD to determine changes in clinical factors between the start of PEM treatment and 0.5 years later. Using FibroScan, 39 of 43 patients were evaluated for liver stiffness (LS; kPa) and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP; dB/m). None of the patients had decompensated cirrhosis. Results: Thirty patients were women, the median age was 66 years old, the median fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score was 2.52, the median LS was 8.05 kPa, and the median CAP was 280.5 dB/m at the start of PEM treatment. AST, ALT, ALP, γGTP, and triglyceride levels decreased 0.5 years after starting PEM treatment, but FIB-4, LS, and CAP values did not decrease. However, LS decreased in patients with a FIB-4 index ≥1.3 at the start of PEM treatment, whereas it did not change in patients with a FIB-4 index 1.3 or LS >8 kPa). Although there is currently no approved treatment for MASLD, PEM may be a viable treatment option for MASLD with mild LS.Internal Medicine, 64(9), pp.1296-1302; 2025journal articl
Antifibrotic effects of IL-12-treated natural killer cells on collagen type I regulation in lung fibroblasts
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic fibrotic lung disease with limited treatment options, making the development of new therapies crucial. We previously demonstrated that γδ T cells, a subset of immune effector cells, exhibit antifibrotic properties. We have also shown that natural killer (NK) cells, another class of immune effectors, can be efficiently expanded in culture using interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interleukin-18 (IL-18). This study examined the effects of interleukin-12 (IL-12)-stimulated NK cells, expanded with IL-2 and IL-18, on type I collagen and α-smooth muscle actin (αSMA) expression in pulmonary fibroblasts. IL-12-stimulated human NK cells exhibited reduced cytotoxicity toward pulmonary fibroblasts while retaining their proliferative capacity. Co-culture of IL-12-stimulated NK cells with fibroblasts significantly suppressed type I collagen and αSMA expression, even without direct cell contact, indicating the involvement of soluble factors. Supernatants from IL-12-stimulated NK cells partially inhibited the expression of these antifibrotic factors, suggesting a dual mechanism: direct cell-cell interaction and soluble factor secretion. Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in the supernatant significantly increased, and neutralizing anti-IFN-γ monoclonal antibody partially reversed type I collagen and αSMA suppression. Similarly, IL-12-stimulated murine NK cells suppressed type I collagen in mouse pulmonary fibroblasts. These findings suggest that IL-12-stimulated NK cells inhibit the expression of fibrosis-associated molecules via contact-dependent and -independent mechanisms, supporting their potential for adoptive cell therapy in pulmonary fibrosis.Experimental Cell Research, 449(1), art. no. 114584; 2025journal articl
