A case of vasa corona ruptured pseudoaneurysm: case report and review of literature

Ruptured aneurysms or pseudoaneurysms associated with the vasa corona, in the absence of cerebral arteriovenous malformation or dural arteriovenous fistula, are extremely rare but should be recognized as a possible cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). We report the case of a 51-year-old female who presented with SAH due to a ruptured vasa corona pseudoaneurysm, with no associated anatomical abnormalities involving the vertebral artery or the posterior inferior cerebellar artery. She recovered after direct surgery. In previous cases, anterior spinal artery dilatation due to posterior inferior cerebellar artery anomalies prompted endovascular treatment. A thorough assessment remains crucial, and direct surgery can be effective.Acta Neurochirurgica, 167(1), art. no. 114; 2025journal articl

Overview of International Health in Postwar Japan

This commentary traces the emergence and evolution of international cooperation in the medical and public health fields in postwar Japan. It examines how trends in the nature of its international cooperation efforts reflected economic and social trends over three time periods between the end of World War II and the end of the twentieth century. In the first period, Japan’s approach to international cooperation was both limited and influenced by its own reconstruction. In the second period, Japan sought to reenter the international community by making contributions towards world peace and international health. In the third period, Japan’s remarkable economic growth enabled it to become a major source of overseas development assistance around the world. The paper includes short profiles of eight Japanese innovators in international health cooperation (and mentions numerous others who were similarly active in the field). Over the years, these and many other individuals built Japanese international health agencies and shaped the country’s changing approaches to international health.Health systems and reform, 11(2), art. no. 2475556; 2025journal articl

Effects of pH and ultrasonication for decomposition of Microcystis formed colony in a bloom sample from a reservoir

In this study, we investigated the effects of pH and ultrasonication on Microcystis degradation in bloom samples consisting predominantly of colonial Microcystis. The biofilm-spiked bloom samples were incubated for 7 days with shaking at low pH (7−8) and high pH (9−10) conditions in the dark. This resulted in a significant decrease in chlorophyll-a at the low pH condition compared to the high pH condition. Conversely, Bayesian regression analysis indicated that the difference in the degradation rate of Chl-a with and without ultrasonication treatment was not statistically significant. It was hypothesized that the dispersed cells rapidly reaggregated, which inhibited the degradation of Microcystis cells. The degradation rate of the IPC gene (intergenic spacer region within the phycocyanin operon) and the mcyB gene (microcystin synthesis gene) demonstrated enhanced degradation rates at low pH conditions relative to high pH conditions, as well as Chl-a. The proliferation of microfauna, including rotifers and protozoa, and the active predation of Microcystis cells were confirmed through microscopic observation under low pH conditions. Notwithstanding the high pH condition, some protozoan species were observed. However, many Microcystis cells and colonies remained. The comparison of the decomposition rates of the IPC gene and the mcyB gene using Bayesian analysis revealed that non-toxic were slightly more preferred than toxic Microcystis cells in the predation process. The estimated cost for adjusting the pH of a small eutrophicated reservoir to pH 7 using industrial sulfuric acid to enhance predation falls within the range of costs that could be considered for practical implementation.Desalination and Water Treatment, 322, art. no. 101203; 2025journal articl
