    Frontal theta activation associated with error detection in toddlers: Influence of familial socio-economic status

    Error detection is one of the functions of the executive attention network, a brain system involved in executive control that includes the anterior cingulate cortex and other prefrontal regions. Despite the key role of this function in a wide range of life outcomes, very limited research has examined the early development of the network and whether its functional efficacy is related to environmental factors. Electrophysiological studies with adults have shown oscillatory activity in theta (4-7 Hz) range arising from medial frontal cortex that follows the detection of self-committed or observed errors. In the current study, we designed a novel experimental procedure that involved a familiarization phase with simple three-pieces puzzles followed by an experimental phase in which toddlers observed the puzzles being formed either correctly or incorrectly. Observation of incorrect configurations produced increased potentials in midline channels and greater power theta activity for both toddlers (n=56) and adults (n=14). Additionally, socio-economic status of the family in general, and parental education in particular, contributed to individual differences in the amplitude of the error-related signal and associated theta power in toddlers, indicating that children raised in lower SES families show poorer activation of the executive attention network. These data demonstrate the influence of environmental factors at the earliest stages of development of the executive attention network. Importantly, results show that error-detection EEG signals can be used as neural markers of the initial development of executive attention, which could be of great help for the early detection of risk for developmental disorders involving deficits in this function

    Relationship between Mismatch Negativity and Antipsychotic Treatment Response in Young People at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis

    Background: Antipsychotics are often prescribed to individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P), despite many not developing psychosis or benefiting from treatment. Mismatch negativity (MMN), linked to glutamatergic NMDAR hypofunction, may predict antipsychotic response. We hypothesized that reduced baseline MMN might indicate poorer response to first-line antipsychotics, which minimally affect glutamate neurotransmission. Methods: Thirty-five CHR-P participants from the NAPLS-3 study completed a roving MMN paradigm prior to commencing or when minimally treated with antipsychotic medications. Baseline electroencephalographic waveforms and peak MMN amplitudes were quantified at FCz electrodes. Symptom severity was measured using the Scale of Psychosis-Risk Symptoms (SOPS) at baseline and after eight weeks of treatment. Baseline peak MMN amplitudes were correlated with symptomatic changes. Results: No reliable MMN response was observed in the full CHR-P sample after Bonferroni correction. Peak MMN amplitudes were not significantly associated with changes in symptom severity across any domain. Exploratory analyses in 17 antipsychotic-naïve participants revealed a significant MMN response and a strong positive correlation between peak MMN amplitudes and increases in positive symptom severity. Conclusions: The utility of MMN as a prognostic marker of antipsychotic treatment response in CHR-P individuals remains unclear. Methodological limitations and MMN paradigm design may have influenced results. Further research addressing these issues is needed to clarify MMN's potential in predicting treatment outcomes in the CHR-P population

    Enacting desired change in the present: Explaining prefigurative collective action in Chile’s 2019 social explosion

    Contemporary mobilisations increasingly confront existing power structures while experimenting with alternative social relations – a dynamic often discussed as prefigurative politics. Yet social psychological research on collective action has prioritised explaining why people participate, paying less attention to what unfolds through action itself. This study examines how 16 participants in Chile’s 2019 ‘social explosion’ made sense of their participation. Drawing on interviews and thematic analysis informed by the elaborated social identity model, we examine whether this involvement was understood in prefigurative terms and if so whether this was grounded in prior commitments or emerged through collective action. We identify four processes through which most participants came to understand their participation as prefigurative: collective identity formation, collective self-objectification, empowering outcomes of collective self-objectification, and prefigurative realisation. Although participants entered the mobilisation with activist commitments, these processes point to the interaction between prior experience and dynamics of struggle, as political meanings were validated and reconfigured in practice. These findings indicate a need for social psychology to approach collective action not just as a behavioural outcome but as a potentially transformative practice in which action is not merely a means to change but a site where social change may begin to take shape

    Can neuroimaging-based machine learning deliver reliable ADHD classification? A systematic review of classification studies

    Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis currently relies primarily on subjective clinical reports, prompting investigation into more objective, brain-based markers using neuroimaging and machine learning. This systematic review examined 236 studies employing machine learning techniques on electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data for ADHD classification. Overall reported classification accuracy across studies was high (87%), with a substantial upward trend over publication years. We found higher classification accuracy in studies using EEG, those that included a cognitive task during data acquisition, and those focusing on younger participants. However, most studies compared ADHD with typically developing participants, and only a very small number included other clinical comparison groups, which may be more informative for clinical translation. In addition, smaller studies tended to report higher accuracies than larger studies, and many studies used validation procedures that may be more prone to overfitting, underscoring the need for larger, more controlled studies in future work. These findings suggest that neuroimaging based machine learning might support reliable ADHD classification under specific methodological conditions, while also highlighting substantial methodological limitations and heterogeneity in the literature that currently constrain direct clinical translation
