Writing and Arm Use in Aphasia Rehabilitation for Left-Handed Individuals: A Scoping Review Protocol

    No full text
This project will conduct a scoping review to examine the existing literature on aphasia recovery in left-handed or non-right-handed individuals, with particular emphasis on the role of motor status, dominant-hand preservation, and manual communication strategies such as writing and gesture in rehabilitation. Aphasia is a common consequence of stroke and is frequently associated with right-sided hemiparesis due to damage to left-hemisphere language regions that are adjacent to motor areas controlling the contralateral upper limb. Because most individuals are right-handed, this pattern of motor impairment often affects the dominant hand and may limit the use of writing or other manual strategies during rehabilitation. However, in left-handed individuals with left-hemisphere damage, motor impairment patterns may differ, and some patients may retain functional use of their dominant hand. This preserved motor capacity may influence participation in rehabilitation approaches that involve writing, drawing, or gesture-based communication. Despite these potentially important clinical implications, handedness is rarely examined systematically in aphasia research, and most rehabilitation studies do not analyze whether dominant-hand preservation influences recovery outcomes or engagement in therapy. Furthermore, although writing and other manual communication modalities are sometimes used in aphasia therapy, their relationship to motor status and handedness has not been comprehensively mapped across the literature. The purpose of this scoping review will be to map and synthesize the breadth of existing evidence related to aphasia recovery in left-handed individuals. Specifically, the review will examine how frequently handedness is considered in aphasia research, how motor impairment and dominant-hand preservation are described in this population, and how writing, gesture, or other manual communication strategies are incorporated into rehabilitation or communication support. By systematically identifying and charting studies that report on left-handed individuals with aphasia, the review will provide an overview of the types of evidence available, the methodologies used, and the main themes emerging in the literature. The expected outcomes of this project include a comprehensive evidence map describing how handedness has been addressed in aphasia research, as well as the identification of major knowledge gaps in the field. In particular, the review will highlight the limited empirical investigation of the relationship between handedness, motor impairment, and rehabilitation strategies. The findings will help inform future research directions and may contribute to the development of more individualized aphasia rehabilitation approaches that consider motor function and dominant-hand use as part of therapy planning

Subclinical hypothyroidism in the first trimester of pregnancy: a comprehensive review of its diagnostic criteria, therapeutic approaches, and perinatal outcomes

    No full text

Species composition, microhabitat and dominant species traits aid persistence of Kalmia-black spruce shrub savannah in eastern Canada

    No full text
Question: In eastern Canada, black spruce-Kalmia forests after wildfire turn to either spruce forest, Kalmia heath, or Kalmia-spruce shrub savannah (SS) depending on fire severity. Do species composition, microhabitat, soil, and dominant species traits in the island and heaths of SS can explain its persistence? Location: Eastern Canada. Methods: We compared species composition, microhabitat conditions, soil properties, and dominant species functional traits in island and heath of three SS sites in Terra Nova National Park, Newfoundland. We determined functional hypervolumes of the four most abundant species using four functional traits that represent resource acquisition and use. Results: High tree cover, cryptogamic species cover, and organic matter depth were associated with island; high light, soil moisture, and shrub cover were associated with heath. Heath soil had higher total N, and lower total C, P, C:N ratio, and K concentration than island soil. Heath had less functional trait variability. Ericaceous species showed a tradeoff between resource conservation in heath to resource acquisition in island. Conclusion: We conclude that the different microclimate, vegetation structure and function of island and heath combinedly contribute to the SS persistence

Architectural Adaptation Strategy of Puri Agung Ubud, an Effort to Preserve Cultural Heritage

    No full text
Puri Agung Ubud is one of the traditional Balinese palaces that functions as a living cultural heritage (living monument) as well as an important cultural tourism attraction in Ubud, Gianyar. The pressure of modern tourism has encouraged various forms of architectural adaptation, both in spatial function, physical form, materials, and socio-cultural utilization patterns within the palace. This study aims to identify architectural adaptation strategies that occur at Puri Agung Ubud, analyze their impact on cultural values and traditional architecture, and formulate conservation directions that are integrated with the development of sustainable cultural tourism. The research method used is descriptive qualitative through field observations, physical measurements, visual documentation, in-depth interviews with puri administrators and cultural figures, and analysis of relevant documents. The analysis is carried out by linking the concepts of Tri Mandala, Sanga Mandala, and Tri Hita Karana to the puri's spatial system, and applying Schmidt & Austin's typology of adaptation strategies (adjustable, versatile, refitable, convertible, scalable, movable) to four main palebahan: Ancak Saji, Semanggen, Rangki, and Saren Agung. The results of this study indicate that Puri Agung Ubud is able to maintain its traditional spatial macrostructure and sacred-cosmological orientation, while selectively adapting through changes in spatial functions, hybrid construction techniques, and transformation of architectural elements to accommodate tourism needs, without completely eliminating its authentic value. The main findings indicate that controlled adaptation based on critical conservation has the potential to strengthen the palace's sustainability as a cultural heritage, on the one hand by maintaining traditional practices and on the other hand by opening economic and educational opportunities through cultural tourism. This article offers a framework for architectural adaptation strategies for similar cultural heritage sites in Bali that face similar pressures from global tourism

A Game-Theoretical Approach to the Accession of Central and Eastern European countries to the European Union in 2004 and 2007

    No full text
This paper employs a novel approach in applying the cheap talk signalling game to study the EU accession game of the 10 Central and Eastern European states that joined the European Union in 2004 and 2007. The interdisciplinary application of a Bayesian game to international relations reveals the strategic interactions between the Union and applicant states in the light of the Copenhagen criteria and the unprecedented challenges countries faced during the post-Communist transition since 1989. The paper first presents the historical background about the EU accession process, debates on EU conditionality and existing game-theoretical approaches, before presenting the timeline and data on accession and reform speed of applicant states from 1989 to 2007. The model applies a signalling game to the negotiations process where the European Commission’s annual progress reports are seen as costless, unverifiable and observable signals to the applicant states about their final EU accession speed. It is demonstrated that possible equilibria outcomes can be uninformative or informative, depending on the players’ divergence of interests with regards to reform speed. Furthermore, the model is used to explain the outcomes seen in three ex-post case studies, taking into account additional domestic and external factors that shaped the varying outcomes of accession and reform speeds in the two EU enlargement waves in the 2000s
