A Large Fibroid Uterus Removed with a Bipolar Morcellator
We report our experience with the use of the PlasmaSord bipolar morcellator on a fibroid uterus over 1500 grams. We suggest some modifications to improve the function of this morcellator to make it more appropriate for true advanced laparoscopy
The menopause mess
Our beliefs about menopause have been challenged by a series of randomized clinical trials, including the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), which have contradicted the results of observational studies which suggested hormone treatment as a “prevent all” for coronary heart disease, as well as several other common chronic diseases. The message, based on the WHI analyses to date, remains the same: while hormone treatment is the most effective way to treat vasomotor symptoms, its use for prevention of chronic disease in women over 60 is not recommended. The Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN), seeks to better characterize the hormonal and symptom patterns of the menopause transition--the phase in which women move from reproductive age ovarian functioning to the final menstrual period--find a marker that will predict the final menstrual period, and determine factors that predict healthy aging
The VBAC dilemma
Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) has been a contentious and controversial issue for fifty years. Once a woman is delivered by cesarean, her options in a subsequent pregnancy are either a planned trial of labor or a planned elective repeat cesarean. There are no randomized trials comparing the two choices to definitively guide patients and physicians. Complicating the VBAC issue is the rising primary cesarean rate, viewed by many as too high, at a time when VBAC rates are decreasing
A case for the resuscitation of infants born at less than 24 weeks gestation
Despite improvements in survival of extremely preterm infants, the decision whether to begin intensive care for infants at borderline viability is controversial. A great deal of this controversy focuses on concerns of survival, cost and neurodevelopmental outcome. Why are these concerns more emphasized in discussions of prematurity than other areas of medicine
ACOG Iowa Section Report, November 2011
The Iowa Section of the American College/Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) represents the practitioners of Iowa locally and nationally. A robust group of legislative advocates and nationally renowned educators and researchers are among our members. Service to women, including international medical missions, has been one of our strengths
Zmiz1 is overexpressed in epithelial ovarian cancer and associated with p53 gene mutations
Zmiz1 staining is elevated in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer. Tumors that are Zmiz1 positive are associated with mutations of the p53 gene. Zmiz1 overexpression may be associated with decreased survival in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer. Additional studies are needed to more clearly determine the role of Zmiz1 in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer
