    Computational investigation of heat generation and dissipation in lithium-ion batteries during multi-rate charging

    Click on the DOI link to access this conference paper at the publishers website (may not be free).This study examines how heat affects lithium-ion batteries during their operation through detailed computer modeling. Our research uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to track heat flow and battery behavior in a rectangular pouch battery design. The model focuses on changes across the battery's thickness, measuring key factors: how electrical current moves, how heat dissipates, and how lithium ions travel through the battery. We tested the battery under two main conditions. First, keeping it a steady room temperature of 298 K, and second, letting it generate heat naturally during use. For each scenario, we tried three different charging speeds: a standard rate (2C at 18 A/m2), a medium rate (4C at 53 A/m2), and a fast rate (6C at 88 A/m2). Our results show important patterns in battery behavior. When batteries charge and discharge faster, they lose capacity more quickly. This happens both when the temperature stays constant and when the battery heats up during use. Interestingly, when heat builds up, the battery takes longer to complete its charge discharge cycles. This occurs because higher temperatures change how the battery works in two ways: they alter the electrical properties of the battery's electrodes and make it easier for lithium ions to move around inside. To address these challenges, we investigated various cooling methods. Our findings suggest that controlling battery temperature is crucial for maintaining performance, especially during fast charging. These insights help explain why battery sometimes underperform and point to ways we can make them work better through improved cooling systems. This study advances our understanding of why batteries heat up during use and how this affects their performance, offering practical solutions for better battery management

    Regional house price cohesion in the UK: recent trends and Covid

    This is an open access article under the CC BY license.Co-movement of house prices across geographical markets (or a lack of such co-movement) has implications for labour mobility and the effectiveness of monetary and other national policies. Previous research on home value co-movement across the UK has yielded mixed findings. In this study we employ a variety of different metrics, and use a sample which includes the covid and post-covid time periods. We find that co-movement has fluctuated greatly over 50 years, but there has not been a clear upward or downward trend in cyclical cohesion over the last five decades. However, there has been a sharp increase in co-movement after the covid pandemic. This reflects a “flattening of the gradient” found in other studies. To the extent that more targeted fiscal transfers to lower-income regions, as well as a relaxation of planning rules for new housing development may encourage greater co-movement, these policies may be worth pursuing. © The Author(s) 2025

    Omnisurface: Common reality for intuitive human-robot collaboration

The projection of images on non-planar surfaces using a conventional projector is challenging due to the inherent problem of distortion. The projection distortion occurs due to the variations in depth across the surface of the teaming workspace. As a result, the projected image, information, or symbols lose their original shape and create confusion during human-robot teaming. In this paper, we presented an innovative approach to perform distortion-free projections in the teaming workspace. A pre-warped image is constructed based on the surface geometry that the projector displays and accurately replicates the original projection image. Beyond the technical achievement, this research highlights the social acceptance of improved spatial augmented reality in human-robot teams. It fosters better teamwork, trust, and efficiency by enabling more intuitive and reliable interactions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025

    Mexican media art, ecologies, the posthuman, and politics

    Click on the DOI link to access this article at the publishers website (may not be free).This volume focuses on the connection between ecological thought and the technological arts in Mexico in order to challenge assumptions that ecological thought is a domain exclusive to the arts of the Global North and reconceive it as an inventive nexus of materialist speculations into a global posthuman world. Tracking the concept of ecology through a series of case studies taken from the histories of new media arts in Mexico over the last 50 years (from the mid-twentieth century to the present), this book differs from ecological art histories that either ignore technological art or associate it exclusively with the Global North. It includes artists and collectives working both in Mexico and transnationally and examines collaborative projects responding to anthropogenic environmental degradation in Mexico and elsewhere.     Tolkien’s languages: How linguistic relativity effects character agency in the lord of the rings

    Thesis (M.A.)-- Wichita State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dept. of EnglishThis paper aims to explore the presence of linguistic relativity in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The following discussion engages with the primary text of Tolkien’s famous narrative, while drawing on much of Tolkien’s published contextual material, such as his correspondence, but especially by drawing from his created languages. By exploring these primary sources and placing them in the context of secondary criticism and biography, we can see an intentional inclusion of attributes in Tolkien’s text that exemplified modern understandings of linguistic relativity. These examples can be found in the affect of the High-Elven language of Quenya on the Elves or “Eldar,” such as Galadriel, and also in the increase or decrease of character agency based on monolingual or multilingual status. Tolkien ultimately uses linguistic relativity to encourage the learning of languages in his characters as an example of how broadened perspectives lead to a healthier global community in the face of oppressive tyranny

    Boiling heat transfer enhancement of submerged water jet impingement on wick structures

    Click on the DOI link to access this article at the publishers website (may not be free).In this study, the boiling heat transfer characteristics of a submerged water jet impingement on a plain surface, a monolayer wick, and a columnar post wick were experimentally investigated. The effects of Reynolds numbers of 0, 846, 1270, and 1693 on the critical heat flux (CHF) were evaluated for the three different impinged surfaces. The wicks were fabricated using a multi-step sintering process with 200 μm copper particles, and boiling experiments were conducted using water at ambient pressure. The results show significant increases in CHF when monolayer and columnar post wicks were used in the boiling setup. This improvement is attributed to the reduced hydrodynamic instability wavelength, which decreased vapor generation and delayed surface dry-out. CHF enhancements were further amplified by employing an impinging jet. An important new finding in this study is that when the impinging jet is injected into the porous medium surface where boiling occurs, the CHF increases. Compared with the full boiling experiment, the CHF for the flat surface, single layer wick, and columnar post wick are 323.1%, 244.3%, and 266.6%, respectively. The wick and jet impingement design provides fundamental insights into simultaneous CHF enhancements, offering potential applications in advanced thermal management systems. © 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

    Epistemic and legal normativity: Reasons, guidance, rights, and capacities

    This is an open access article under the CC BY license.This paper address two related topics regarding reasons, rational guidance, and epistemic capacities. First, the paper draws a parallel between the publicity condition on the rule of law and legal normativity, and an internal guidance constraint on genuine epistemic reasons and justification: just as the rule of law requires that laws must be available to the people to whom they apply, genuine epistemic reasons must also be available to the people to whom they apply. The parallel supports a kind of qualified internalism about epistemic reasons, motivated by a “Guidance” constraint on normative reasons. Second, the paper addresses the relation between epistemic rights and epistemic capacities. Lani Watson has recently argued that epistemic rights do not depend on epistemic capacities. In particular, she argues that in order to have a right to know, it’s not necessary that you have a capacity to know. If her view is correct, it poses a threat to the general applicability of Guidance constraints across normative domains. Although I largely agree with Watson’s approach to epistemic rights, I argue that this particular aspect of her view is mistaken: while negative epistemic rights (typically) do not depend on having any particular capacities, positive epistemic rights to know things do depend on a capacity to know those things. © The Author(s) 2025
