    Changes in frequency and abundance of Vernonia baldwinii and Solidago rigida under cattle grazing

    Presented to the 24th Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum (URCAF) held in Woolsey Hall, Wichita State University, April 25, 2025.It is widely believed that non-grazeable native grassland forbs, such as Vernonia baldwinii (Baldwin’s ironweed) and Solidago rigida (stiff-leaved goldenrod), negatively impact grazeable grasses and potentially lead to economic losses for ranchers. One reason for the increase in these forbs is overgrazing of pastures. This study tests whether decreased grazing pressure will lead to stabilization or reduction of S. rigida and V. baldwinii on a Flint Hills ranch. Following a noteworthy increase in these species at this ranch, long-term monitoring plots were established in 2019. The initiation of this monitoring coincided with a reduction in grazing intensity in 2020 and subsequent years. Using a systematic sampling design, six transects with six, 1x1 meter plots were surveyed periodically over a five-year period to quantify species frequency, abundance, and the presence of other grasses and forbs. Data collection adhered to a standardized protocol to ensure consistency and accuracy. I found evidence for stabilization or declines for these forb species over the sample period, and there was evidence for broad decline of these species in certain portions of the ranch. These findings suggest that, under careful cattle management, these non-grazeable forbs are unlikely to negatively impact pasture quality. This conclusion would be strengthened by further monitoring of species abundances and quantification of grazing activity

    Design modifications and fabrication of endcaps and loading-unloading mechanism for a chemical vapor deposition system

    Presented to the 24th Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum (URCAF) held in Woolsey Hall, Wichita State University, April 25, 2025.The objective of this project is design, optimization, and manufacturing of endcaps and loading-unloading support assemblies for a quartz-tube furnace used in a Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) system for synthesis of carbon nanostructures. This project is being executed for the Multifunctional Nanocomposites Lab (MNL) at WSU in support of our sponsor's (Dr. Askari) research on high-performance nanocomposite materials systems and devices. Principle of mechanical design, materials science, manufacturing, computer-aided-analysis, and iterative design procedures were used for design modification/optimization of a set of endcaps and design of a support mechanism, and a loading-unloading system for the CVD system. Our problem statement is to develop a method by which the endcaps can be attached easily/safely, and perfectly seal the quartz-tube reaction chamber, while reducing the stresses induced on the ends of the quartz-tube during the operation (i.e., exposed to nearly 750°F). The goal is to provide perfect sealing and to retain as much of the original endcap design as possible to minimize machining and material costs. In this project, design standards such as ASTM E228-22, ASTM A962, ASTM A193, and ASME Y14.5 were considered, when designing these endcaps and the additional supports. Design software like SolidWorks and Catia were used to fully design the required parts/subsystems. For parts fabrication, existing facilities in GoCreate and the Innovation Hub at WSU (e.g., manual and CNC machine tools, drills, and waterjet cutter) will be mostly used per our design specification, in addition to our own personal devices/tools (e.g., manual machines and 3D printer). Through this design project, the existing CVD system in MNL lab will be completed and ready for installation and operations for synthesis of nanomaterials and nanostructures for a wide range of engineering applications

    Thermoeconomic optimization of climate-adaptive solar and wind multi-generation systems using artificial intelligence and thermal energy recovery

    Click on the DOI link to access this article at the publishers website (may not be free).This study presents a hybrid multi-generation energy system designed to overcome solar intermittency while meeting the global demand for integrated delivery of electricity, water, cooling, and sustainable fuels in the transition to decarbonization. The engineering application integrates solar thermal and wind energy with a modified Brayton cycle, a Steam Rankine Cycle (SRC), and a Thermoelectric Generator (TEG) to simultaneously produce electricity, fresh water via Reverse Osmosis (RO), hydrogen and oxygen via Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer (PEME), and cooling (via absorption chiller) within a unified optimization framework. The system was modeled using Engineering Equation Solver (EES) and optimized via Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on 11 decision variables. To address the complexity of optimization, a second phase applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques: Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost) for predictive modelling and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for global optimization. Under optimal conditions, the Response Surface Methodology yielded an exergy efficiency of 45.8 % with a cost rate of 576.76 United States Dollars per hour (USD/h), while AI reduced costs to 211.2 USD/h with a moderate efficiency trade-off. Simulation of the optimized configuration across eight diverse climates identified Quebec as most viable, generating 22,629.6 Megawatt-hours per year (MWh/year) of electricity and avoiding 4616.4 tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions annually. Integration of wind energy stabilizes solar variability, enhancing performance. AI contributes to optimizing complex interactions, nonlinear constraints, and multiple conflicting objectives. The methodology offers a scalable, generalizable framework for designing intelligent, climate-resilient infrastructures. Future research includes AI-enabled real-time control, experimental validation, and broader deployment strategies

    Perceived challenges/stressors to leadership positions in higher education and their impact on leaders’ psychological well-being

    Thesis (E.dD)-- Wichita State University, College of Applied Studies, Dept. of Intervention Services and Leadership in EducationThis quantitative study examined the perceived challenges associated with academic leadership roles in higher education, including positions like dean, associate dean, assistant dean, department chair/head, program chair/ head, co-chair, and academic vice president. Utilizing the One-Way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis, the research evaluated how leadership positions and perceived challenges affected the psychological well-being of academic leaders in various roles. The findings indicated significant differences in well-being based on leadership position, with program chairs and deans reporting higher levels of well-being. In comparison, department chairs and academic vice presidents experienced lower levels of well-being. Additionally, stress levels negatively impacted well-being, whereas the frequency of challenges was positively correlated with psychological health. This suggests that adaptive coping strategies may mitigate the adverse effects of stress. The study emphasizes the importance of institutional support and stress management training for academic leaders, particularly those in mid-level positions. Moreover, it highlights the need for resilience-building initiatives and comprehensive mental health support to enhance well-being and leadership effectiveness. Limitations include the use of a non-random sampling method and the absence of qualitative data, which may restrict the generalizability of findings. Future research should investigate these dynamics over time and across different leadership styles to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing the psychological well-being of academic leaders

Food safety audits are crucial for identifying risks and creating a robust food safety culture. An internal food safety audit serves as a continuous improvement tool and prepares for food safety certifications or other standards; however, if auditors are not proficient, food safety audits may be less effective. Measuring internal auditors' calibration can provide value, ensuring that auditors understand the standards and associated food safety risks. This case study analyzed metrics to measure the calibration of internal food safety auditors
