USING VIGNETTES TO EXPLORE TEACHERS’ STRATEGIES FOR FOSTERING STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION FOR LEARNING MATH

    No full text
Mathematical knowledge and skills are an essential resource not only for schooling and academic achievement but also for general problem-solving and successful functioning in various areas of everyday life. Schools and teachers play a crucial role in encouraging and developing students’ abilities and skills in mathematics, with one of the main goals being to foster motivation for learning. However, previous findings indicate that learning mathematics in Serbian schools often entails negative emotions and a decrease in motivation. The project “Co-constructing Mathematical Motivation in Primary Education - A Longitudinal Study in Six European Countries” examines the development of mathematical motivation and the factors influencing this process. This paper presents part of the project’s results, specifically related to teachers’discourses on student motivation for learning mathematics in elementary school. The research employed vignettes—short descriptions of three students’ profiles based onmotivation, emotions and achievement measures—as prompts for semi-structured interviews about teachers’ attitudes and practices related to students’ motivation to learn mathematics. Key themes from the interviews include how different students can be supported, what experiences help teachers implement practices to encourage and motivate students, the resources they rely on or may lack, and the strategies they find particularly successful for motivating students of different profiles. The study encompassed a total of 12 teachers from schools participating in the project, including 6 classroom teachers and 6 mathematics teachers. These teachers were selected as examples of good practice regarding student motivation, based on the average scores of students in their classes concerning intrinsic motivation, perceived competence, and enjoyment of learning mathematics. Respondents’ answers were analyzed using inductive-deductive thematic analysis, with some codes defined based on the theory of motivation and others derived from the collected responses. The results indicate that teachers often spontaneously design strategies “on the fly” through trial and error, searching for what will be most successful with individual students. Classroom teachers cite their relationship with students and the enthusiasm they convey as key motivators. Mathematics teachers frequently apply strategies aimed at the utility of mathematics or enhancing students’ perceived competencies. They recognize highly motivated and successful students as “talented” in mathematics and strive to keep them engaged with additional, interesting tasks to prevent boredom in class. Peer interaction is often used as an incentive for both successful and less successful students. Teacher narratives are fundamental in constructing an evidence-based support tool to enhance students’ motivation to learn mathematics

Adolescents have a task of choosing an educational path that suits them, but often lack the knowledge in their abilities, leading to mismatch between aspirations and competencies. Aims of this study are to test how many students are realistic about their future education. Second aim is to describe extracted profiles based on their demographics and socio-emotional skills (SSES). We used data from PISA 2022 which consisted of 6256 Serbian students. Findings reveal that 24% of students are low performers, with 22% realistically aiming for high school (RLP), 36% unrealistically aspiring to tertiary education (ULP), and 42% undecided. Conversely, 19% are high performers, with 8% unrealistically aiming for high school (UHP), 80% realistically aspiring to tertiary education (RHP), and 12% undecided. RLP are more often from vocational schools, males, and have lower ESCS. They exhibit lower perseverance, curiosity, empathy, and assertiveness scores. ULP are more often from vocational schools and have lower ESCS. They show higher curiosity and assertiveness than RLP. RHP, more often from gymnasium, females, and higher ESCS demonstrate the highest SSES scores across all domains. UHP, more often males, show moderate levels of perseverance, empathy, and assertiveness but lower curiosity than RHP. Understanding unrealistic aspirations is crucial for guiding students towards setting achievable educational goals

Stigma determining factors in patients with epilepsy

    No full text
Purpose: To find factors determining the stigma in people with epilepsy (PWE) living in Belgrade, Serbia. Method: Consecutive adult patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy able to understand and complete the questionnaires were included in the study. Patients completed the Serbian version of the Stigma Scale of Epilepsy (SSE) (Lalatovic et al. 2023), Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDI-E), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). A two-sample t-test was used to detect the effects of sociodemographic and epilepsy-related variables on stigma, and Pearson's coefficient for correlation between mood-related variables and stigma scores. By stepwise regression analysis, the major factors associated with stigma perception among PWE were identified. Results: The sample consisted of 108 PWE (60.2% were female, age range: 19–67 years). Adverse effects of antiseizure medications (ASMs) (t(106)=2.07, p=0.04, d=0.48) and driving ability (t(45)=2.90, p=0.006, d=0.85) significantly influenced SSE scores. Other socio-demographic and clinical variables had no significant effects on epilepsy-related stigma. Depression severity significantly influenced SSE scores (based on the NDDI-E cut-off score), and SSE showed a positive association with PHQ-9 (r=0.42, p<0.001) and GAD-7 scores (r=0.35, p<0.001) as well. All potential predictor variables that showed a significant relationship with SSE (driving ability, adverse effects of ASMs, depression, and anxiety levels) were included in the stepwise regression analysis. Depression severity measured by PHQ-9 remained the only significant predictor of the SSE total score (F(1,45)=10.01, p=0.003). PHQ-9 accounted for 16.4% of the variance in the SSE total score. Conclusion: There was a significant association between perceived stigma in PWE and adverse effects of ASMs, driving ability, and mood disorders, but the level of stigma total score could be predicted by the depression symptoms severity

Trust as an indicator of the quality of the parent – preschool teacher relationship in an inclusive kindergarten

    No full text
Due to the importance of collaboration between families and educational institutions in fostering children’s development and their positive academic outcomes, it is necessary to develop a partnership between preschool teachers and parents from the onset of a child’s enrollment in kindergarten. One of the most crucial aspects of building a partnership between parents and preschool teachers is trust. Given the lack of research on this topic in Serbia, the aim of this study was to examine differences in the level of trust between parents and preschool teachers, as well as in relation to the developmental status of children. The sample consisted of 306 preschool teachers and 450 parents of children with and without developmental difficulties. The Trust Scale was applied, with separate forms for teachers and parents. The results confirmed that preschool teachers have a higher level of trust in parents than parents have in preschool teachers. Additionally, parents of children with disabilities have less trust in preschool teachers than parents of typically developing children. The findings indicated that the parents of the children with disabilities should represent a target group for intervention regarding the development of trust in preschool teachers. Further research on the correlates of trust as an integrative element of a quality relationship with preschool teachers is needed to better understand how parents and teachers collaborate for the benefit of children. Such understanding is crucial for the development of successful inclusive educational programs, where parents and children feel a sense of belonging

Maloletnička delinkvencija: pogled kroz prizmu negativnih iskustava u detinjstvu

    No full text

Verbal communication disorders are heterogeneous disorders that can have a negative impact on the acquisition of reading and writing skills. It is assumed that the presence of verbal communication disorders, regardless of etiology, is a risk factor for the development of deficits in the development of skills necessary for mastering reading and writing. The aim of this research was to review and systematize the available literature in order to present devices and applications that make it possible to overcome obstacles in the mastery of reading and writing skills in children with verbal communication disorders. Also, to describe their characteristics, identify their advantages and possible uses, as well as the factors that influence their use in the education of students with these disorders. The review of the literature was carried out using the database of the Serbian Library Consortium for Coordinated Acquisition and Internet search engines, such as Google Scholar Advanced Search and Research Gate. Research shows that the use of assistive technology to overcome barriers to literacy mastery in children with verbal communication disorders has two basic functions related to stimulating literacy learning and providing an alternative means of accessing written text. Assistive technology used to support this process includes word processing, spell checking, word prediction, speech-to-text or text-to-speech applications. In recent decades, programs and applications to support literacy acquisition have been developed for tablets and cell phones, increasing their availability, portability, user independence and ability to participate equally in social interactions. This improves self-confidence and the development of a positive attitude towards activities that involve reading and writing

When there is a will there is a way: The social teaching practices of primary school teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Get PDF
The study aimed to examine the implementation of social teaching practices (STP) in primary schools in Serbia during the COVID-19 pandemic. We explored how the flexibility of STP relates to teachers’ socioemotional competencies (SEC), general teaching difficulties during the pandemic, their satisfaction with the education system, and perception of professional future on a sample of 817 teachers. Research findings suggest that those teachers with higher SEC, less teaching difficulties, and those who are more satisfied with the education system and more optimistic about their professional future implement more STPs. Differences in STPs were also found regarding the teachers’ gender, education cycle, and teaching modality. The study indicated that use of STPs by teachers in times of crisis can be empowered with diverse support opportunities through professional development.

    Roditeljstvo i zatvor

    Get PDF
