    No full text
Hydrogels have peculiar physical and chemical properties and therefore, are used in a variety of biomedical applications including drug delivery agents, prosthetic devices, the repair and replacement of soft tissues, contact lenses, etc. Consequently, investigation of mechanical, physical and chemical properties is crucial in biomedical application of hydrogels. Poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA), as a biocompatible hydrogel, was first hydrogel used for making soft contact lenses. Many researches have been modified pHEMA with the aim of improving its properties. Application of nanotechnology is one of the possible solutions for improving the characteristics of this biocompatible hydrogel. In this paper, polyhydroxyethyl methacrylate was used as standard material for soft contact lenses (SL 38). This material was incorporated with fullerene C-60 (SL38-A), fullerol C-60(OH)(24) (SL 38-B) and fullerene metformin hydroxylate C-60(OH)(12)(OC4N5H10)(12) (SL 38-C), respectively. Three new nanophotonic soft contact lenses were made. The main goal of this research was to develop appropriate process parameters for soft contact lens micro-turning. Also, studying the thermal decomposition of standard soft contact lens, pHEMA, as well as three new nanophotonic soft contact lenses was one of the main objectives. Results have shown that manufacturing process of nanofotonic soft contact lens is considered to be a micro-turning process regarding the cutting depth and tool nose ratio. Thermal stability of all three nanofotonic soft contact lenses was significantly improved comparing to the standard soft contact lens. Still, further research needs to be done so these nonophotonic soft contact lenses could find practical application in the field of biomedical engineering

Aphasia is a multimodal language impairment that can affect all of the language modalities: the speech, auditory comprehension, designation, repetition, reading and writing abilities, gesture and linguistic thinking (Vuković, 2016). The aim of this study is to determine Reading aloud and reading comprehension in patients with aphasia. The study enveloped 16 respondents aged from 50 to 75 years. Aphasia was assessed using the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE). The study was carried out at the ''Institute for psychophysiological disorders and speech pathology 'PhD Cvetko Brajović' '' in Belgrade. What came after determining the type of aphasia was the data collection for the needs of this study. For the evaluation (assessment) of the reading ability the following tests were used: subtest for oral reading of words, phrases from BDAE, as well as the story “Peasant’s sons“. The results of this study show that people suffering from aphasia can have problems with reading and understanding words and phrases. Also those problems can corelate with type and severity of aphasia

During the COVID-19 epidemic, distance learning was implemented by all the educational institutions in the Republic of Serbia. Due to the fact that children with disabilities were included in this type of learning, this research aimed to investigate the experiences and attitudes of their parents towards distance learning. The research sampled 61 participants, and the research instrument consisted of the adjusted questions that the authors retrieved from the research previously done in China. The participants completed an online questionnaire, and the results were interpreted with descriptive and inferential statistics. According to the statistical analysis, the parents that spent more time on their children’s education than usual, as well as parents with a higher level of education demonstrated more negative views on distance learning. Apart from that, their attitudes towards distance learning were negative in general, and the parents’ and teachers’ interaction plays a significant role in the parents’ satisfaction with distance learning. The results highlight the need for encouraging the interaction and cooperation between parents, school, and children in distance learning planning and organization while taking the specific needs of children with disabilities into consideration.U vreme epidemije virusa COVID-19 u Republici Srbiji organizovana je nasta- va na daljinu u svim obrazovnim ustanovama.

A telemedical approach to the hearing assessment

    Get PDF
Although the idea of providing long-distance medical services dates back to the middle of the last century, only the development of information technology enabled the development of a different approach to the healthtelehealth. Benefits such as speed, availability, reduced travel costs, available expertise, real-time consultation, etc., greatly improve medical care. In many fields of medicine, telehealth has replaced classical approaches and procedures and has become the standard. The first applications of telehealth were in the field of audiology in the form of long-distance hearing screening. This paper describes an example of an online hearing test system. The system is based on listening to speech in noise using the "Quick Speech in Noise Test" – QuickSIN test. The criteria on the basis of which the system was implemented are described: methodological and technological requirements, hardware and software environment, procedure for forming a base of spoken material for Serbian language and corresponding masking signals. There is a QuickSIN test for adults and for children. For this occasion, QuickSIN test for adults will be described as the first triage test for distant hearing testing that does not require special environmental conditions. As the test is sensitive and easily accessible, it can be of great help in detecting initial levels of hearing impairment and thus a significant help in preventing severe damage.

The objective of the survey was to verify the hypothesis that children from Serbia and children from Canada differ in their results on the Numeracy Screener test (NST) that correlates with the arithmetic competences of elementary school children. We sampled 105 subjects aged by 8.10 - 9.58, where the group from Serbia included all 27 pupils of a third-grade class from an elementary school in Belgrade and the group from Canada consisted of 78 third-grade pupils from an elementary school from southern Ontario. By applying the NST test (symbolic and non-symbolic subtests), the basic mathematical competences of children were examined. Statistically significant differences were found in favor of the examinees from Serbia on the symbolic subtest, whereas in the results of the nonsymbolic subtest no differences were found between the examinees. Also, within the Serbian sample, no differences were found between girls and boys of the applied instrument. We recommend that future research strive to validate the NST on a larger, and heterogeneous samples of the same-aged children from rural and urban milieus in Serbia, using the following criteria: non-verbal IQ, student’s marks from all teaching subjects during the current school year, evaluation scales for teachers, questionnaires for the parents and the results of the final math test.

Social care for persons with disabilities, which is a necessity in modern societies must be regulated legally and organizationally, but also based on a scientific basis, constantly checked and continuously upgraded. Sport is a form of cultural activities of man in society in order to detect motor skills of people and in terms of competitiveness. An important trend in the development of physical culture and sports is its universality, and the desire to sport attract all segments of the population, including people with disabilities. Therefore, physical culture and sport are the social sphere of society and to ensure proper formation and development of the physical characteristics and motor abilities of each person. Our work aims to show and explain opportunities for sport at a young age, with special emphasis on school sports and competitions held for deaf children in the Republic of Serbia. Zato fizička kultura i sport predstavljaju socijalnu sferu društva i obezbeđuju pravilno formiranje i razvoj fizičkih osobina kao i moto- ričkih sposobnosti svakog čoveka.

The main goal of this research was to describe the type and level of parents' concerns about child development and behaviour according to the PEDS test (Parents' Evaluation of Developmental Status). The sample included 289 parents of children from three to seven years of age, from two preschool institutions in Serbia. A significantly high correlation was determined between parents' general concerns and expressed concerns with regard to behaviour ((2)=17.86, df=2, p lt .001) and getting along with others ((2)=22.57, df=2, p lt .000). A marginally significant correlation was determined between parents' general concerns and manifested concerns with regard to fine motor skills ((2)=5.90, df=2, p=.052), as well as expressive language ((2)=5.858, df=2, p=.053). According to the criteria of PEDS test, this research identified 56.4% of children whose development needed to be monitored, 27.7% of children who needed to be referred for detailed diagnostic procedures, and 1.7% who needed to be included in treatment or special education support. This is the peer‐reviewed version of the article: Ilić, S. Get PDF
The aim of the study is to determine the characteristics of lexical-semantic processing of nouns in children aged five and a half to seven years. The sample consists of 60 children, of which 30 (50%) are boys and 30 (50%) are girls. In relation to age, the sample of children is divided into three age groups with an age interval of six months. In order to research lexical-semantic abilities, the Test of speech development-Testofword definitions and the Semantic test were applied. The results of the study show that preschool children most often produce functional definitions (31%), while the literary and descriptive definitions (18%), as well as logical definitions (17%) are almostequally represented in the answers ofchildren. When analyzing the results of semantic abilities, itwas found that children achieve the best performance on the antonyms task, while the lowest achievement was accomplished within the synonyms task. Only on the antonyms taskstatistically significant differences were identified in achievement between the youngest and middle-aged group, in favor of older children (p < 0.05). Boys and girls show similar tendencies in development of different abilities, measured by overall performance on all tasks, as indicated by the absence of interaction between age and sex factors (p > 0.05). The importance of children's vocabulary development and its impact on school performance has been the subject of many studies. A well-developed vocabulary in children is part of their language competence and contributes to development of adequate communication skills, therefore, the linguistic indicators we used in our study representa significant indicator oflexical-semantic development
