A linguística e a semiótica no quadro geral das ciências: Naville, Saussure e Peirce
Full text linkThe paper examines the place of semiotics and linguistics, as well as their historical precursors in the framework of the sciences in general. Early classifications of the sciences considered include those of Aristotle, the Scholastics, Francis Bacon, and John Locke. The focus of this paper is on XIXth-century systems. After a cursory glance at André-Marie Ampère’s and Roswell Park’s systems, the study will turn to the classifications of linguistics and semiotics within the systems of Adrien Naville, Ferdinand de Saussure, and Charles S. Peirce. The paper provides a brief survey of XXIst-century views on the place of linguistics in its relation to semiotics before concluding with a study of semiotics among the sciences of the XXIst century.O artigo examina o lugar da Semiótica e da Linguística, bem como de seus precursores históricos, no quadro geral das ciências. As classificações anteriores das ciências consideradas incluem aquelas de Aristóteles, dos escolásticos, de Francis Bacon e John Locke. O foco deste artigo está nos sistemas do século XIX. Após uma rápida leitura dos sistemas de André-Marie Ampère e de Roswell Park, o estudo volta-se para as classificações da Linguística e da Semiótica dentro dos sistemas de Adrien Naville, Ferdinand de Saussure e Charles S. Peirce. O artigo fornece um breve panorama das visões do século XX do lugar da Linguística em relação à Semiótica, antes de concluir com um estudo sobre a Semiótica entre as ciências do século XXI
Emancipação e protagonismo por um olhar semiótico: racismo, antirracismo e a negação de direitos à juventude negra no Brasil
Full text linkThis article analyzes phenomena related to Emancipation, Social Protagonism, and the Racism and Anti-Racism agendas in contemporary Brazilian society, seen from a semiotic perspective and with a special focus on the study of Youth. In agreement with Almeida (2021), we believe that racism is not only expressed through individual actions, but is the result of a complex network of economic, political, and social influences and mechanisms. We approach works by contemporary thinkers who have gained increasing prominence and prestige in public debate and we observe the harsh phenomenon of violence against black youth in Brazil. Our approach experiments with the operationality of concepts from contemporary Semiotics Theory, with regard to the analysis of the manifestations of racism proposed by the authors which we work with. The findings point to a possibility of applying concepts coming from Sociossemiotics of Landowski\u27s (2014) theory of interaction regimes to work on the issues observed.Este artigo analisa fenômenos ligados à emancipação, ao protagonismo social e às pautas do racismo e antirracismo na sociedade brasileira contemporânea, vistos desde uma perspectiva semiótica e com foco especial no estudo da juventude. Com Almeida (2021), acreditamos que o racismo não é apenas expresso por meio de ações individuais, e sim fruto de uma complexa rede de influências e mecanismos econômicos, políticos e sociais. Abordamos obras de pensadores contemporâneos que têm obtido cada vez mais destaque e prestígio no debate público e observamos o duro fenômeno da violência contra a juventude negra no Brasil. Nossa abordagem experimenta a operacionalidade de conceitos da Teoria Semiótica contemporânea no que tange à análise das manifestações de racismo propostas pelos autores. As conclusões apontam na direção da aplicação de conceitos da Teoria dos Regimes de Interação, extraída da Sociossemiótica de Landowski (2014), no que concerne especificamente ao trabalho sobre os assuntos observados
Institutional detachment: the Federal Prosecutor’s Office and the Operation Car Wash
No full textThis article aims at enlightening the constitution of the actor Operation Car Wash (OLJ), investigating to what extent it is possible to think of an actor which detaches itself from its original institution, the Federal Prosecutor Service (MPF), starting to appear as a relevant political agent. For such, we start from the meanings expressed in the first criminal complaint of the operation against former president Lula and from quantitative data collected from the 58 criminal complaints of this operation, from the core of Curitiba, carried out between 2014 and 2016. Initially, we infer the constitution of the actor of the enunciation in the complaint. The elements included in the text show the construction of two different actors, even if interconnected. We conclude, through semiotic analysis, that this separation occurs through a screening, in which in the MPF there is a euphorization of the universe values – composing democratic values –, while, in the OLJ, there is a euphorization of the absolute values – composing aristocratic values, characterized by a hyperbolic and anti-political discourse.O artigo procura lançar luz sobre a constituição do ator Operação Lava Jato (OLJ), investigando em que medida se pode pensar em um ator que se descola de sua instituição de origem, o Ministério Público Federal (MPF), passando a figurar como um agente político relevante. Para tal, partimos dos sentidos postos na primeira denúncia da operação contra o ex-presidente Lula e de dados quantitativos colhidos das 58 denúncias dessa operação, do núcleo de Curitiba, efetuadas entre os anos de 2014 e 2016. Inicialmente, depreendemos a constituição dos atores na petição, identificando as características de cada um. Os elementos postos na peça evidenciam a construção de dois diferentes atores, mesmo que interligados. Concluímos, por meio da análise semiótica, que essa separação ocorre por uma triagem, na qual há no MPF uma euforização dos valores de universo – compondo valores democráticos –, enquanto, na OLJ, há uma euforização dos valores de absoluto – compondo valores aristocráticos, que se caracterizou por um discurso hiperbólico e antipolítica
De la Sopa al pistou a la cocina con 20 soles: semiótica del valor entre lo estético y lo cotidiano
Full text linkEl objetivo de este artículo es analizar las tensiones entre lo estético y lo utilitario en las representaciones culinarias, comparando la receta-parangón de la alta gastronomía con las recetas populares en plataformas digitales y televisivas como "20 Lucas". La metodología empleada es el análisis semiótico estructural, basado en los trabajos de Algirdas Julien Greimas y Émile Benveniste, enfocándose en cómo el lenguaje configura los objetos de valor en ambos contextos. El hallazgo principal revela que mientras las recetas clásicas, como la sopa al pistou, enfatizan el hedonismo estético y la estabilidad cultural, las recetas populares contemporáneas responden a un utilitarismo poético, adaptándose a restricciones económicas y prácticas cotidianas. Este artículo aporta una extensión crítica al análisis de Greimas al integrar las realidades económicas y mediáticas actuales, mostrando que la semiótica culinaria no solo debe enfocarse en el valor ideal, sino también en los procesos de ajuste y negociación que caracterizan las prácticas sociales contemporáneas.El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las tensiones entre lo estético y lo utilitario en las representaciones culinarias, comparando la receta-parangón de la alta gastronomía con las recetas populares en plataformas digitales y televisivas como "20 Lucas". The methodology employed was structural semiotic analysis, drawing on the works of Algirdas Julien Greimas and Émile Benveniste, focusing on how language shapes objects of value in both contexts. The main finding reveals that while classic recipes, such as pistou soup, emphasize aesthetic hedonism and cultural stability, contemporary popular recipes respond to poetic utilitarianism, adapting to economic constraints and everyday practices. This article provides a critical extension to Greimas’ analysis by integrating current economic and media realities, demonstrating that culinary semiotics must not only focus on idealized values but also on the processes of adjustment and negotiation that characterize contemporary social practices
La théorisation sémiotique des modalités et le statut de la vérité
Full text linkThis article dynamically rereads four of Greimas’s texts in Du sens II, which are devoted to the semiotic theorization of modalities. We begin by showing how this theorization relates to the progress of narrative semiotics, and in what direction it takes it. We then set out to clarify the problems it raises regarding the definition of modalities, their typology and their metalinguistic designations. Finally, given that this theorization encounters in these texts interests specific to the theory of logic (from which the very notion of modality is borrowed), we attempt to grant the notion of truth a status that is compatible with semiotic theory. To this end, a distinction is made between truth enunciated by default and modal enunciations (alethic and epistemic, no less than axiological and fiduciary) of truth.Le présent article se propose de relire de manière dynamique quatre textes de Greimas contenus dans Du sens II et consacrés à la théorisation sémiotique des modalités. On montre d’abord de quelle façon cette théorisation se rattache aux progrès de la sémiotique narrative et dans quelle direction elle l’oriente. On s’attache ensuite à expliciter les problèmes qu’elle soulève à propos de la définition des modalités, de leur typologie et de leurs désignations métalinguistiques. Enfin, étant donné que cette théorisation rencontre dans ces textes des intérêts propres à la théorie de la logique (à laquelle la notion même de modalité est empruntée), on cherche à accorder à la notion de vérité un statut qui soit compatible avec la théorie sémiotique. Du sens II: fidelity and change
No full textThis article aims to highlight some of the contributions the book Du sens II. Essais sémiotiques (1983) has brought to Discursive Semiotics, especially in Brazil. The discussion is organized into three sections: in the first section, for a general approach to the work, parts of the Preface written by the author for the Brazilian translation of Sobre o sentido II. Ensaios Semióticos, published in 2014, are revisited; in the second and third sections, two specific questions are examined, that of enunciation and that of veridiction, concepts whose trajectories have been drawn from the theoretical and methodological approach presented in Greimas’ book.Este artigo procura ressaltar algumas das contribuições que o livro Du sens II. Essais sémiotiques (1983) trouxe para a Semiótica Discursiva desenvolvida, sobretudo, no Brasil. A discussão se organiza em três partes: na primeira, para uma abordagem geral da obra, são retomadas partes do Prefácio que a autora fez para a tradução brasileira de Sobre o sentido II. Ensaios semióticos publicada em 2014; na segunda e na terceira, são examinadas duas questões específicas, a da enunciação e a da veridicção, cujos rumos foram tomados a partir do que se apresenta como encaminhamento teórico e metodológico nesse livro de Greimas
Misogyny in Political Imagery: Violence and Power in the Portraits of Dilma Rousseff
No full textDilma Rousseff played a groundbreaking political role in Brazil, shattering gender barriers that had long hindered women\u27s access to leadership roles in the government. Her significant involvement in the left\u27s resistance against the military dictatorship in the 1960s led to her imprisonment and torture. Released in 1973, she continued her political activism, contributing to the reconstruction of the Brazilian left during the transition to democracy. This challenging political landscape triggered an unprecedented response: misogynistic discourses in political media coverage became more prevalent. In this context, considering the portrait as the "conversion of a phenomenological presence into another, imagined" (Beyaert-Geslin, p. 28, 2017), and acknowledging gender as ideal for establishing (inter)subjective affirmation and exposure strategies (Dondero, 2014), we aim to illustrate how misogynistic discursive operations in media discourse permeate framing strategies, enunciative projection, and actor construction in Dilma\u27s media portraits.Dilma Rousseff, figura política única no Brasil, quebrou barreiras de gênero e desempenhou um papel crucial na resistência à ditadura militar nos anos 1960. Após ser presa e torturada, participou ativamente da reconstrução da esquerda durante a transição para a democracia. Contudo, seu papel desafiador desencadeou uma reação inédita na mídia: discursos misóginos tornaram-se frequentes. Este trabalho explora como tais discursos permeiam os retratos midiáticos de Dilma, analisando estratégias de enquadramento, projeção enunciativa e construção da identidade. Ao considerar o retrato como a "conversão de uma presença fenomenológica em outra, imaginada" (Beyaert-Geslin, p. 28, 2017) e o gênero como estratégia de afirmação (inter)subjetiva (Dondero, 2014), investigamos como as operações discursivas misóginas se manifestam na representação midiática de Dilma, revelando complexidades na interseção entre gênero, política e mídia
Sobre o sentido II: sugestão de leitura
No full textThis study seeks to demonstrate that, while it is still the consummation of a fundamental phase of semiotics and despite founding several of the theory\u27s foundations that are still valid, Du sens II also sowed the seeds of the transformations that semiotics would undergo in the following years and which are still thriving today. To do so, we first look at general aspects of the book, such as the chronology and organization of the studies that make it up. This is followed by a brief analysis of Greimas’ preface and the central aspects of each of the eleven studies that make up the book. Finally, the conclusion seeks to highlight the perspectives opened up by the book and its effectiveness in the development of the theory.Este estudo procura demonstrar que, sem deixar de ser a consumação de uma fase fundamental da semiótica e tendo fundado diversos dos alicerces da teoria, Sobre o sentido II lançou as sementes das transformações pelas quais essa ciência passaria nos anos seguintes e que vicejam até os dias atuais. Para tanto, em um primeiro momento são abordados aspectos gerais do livro, tais como a cronologia e a organização dos estudos que o compõem. Em seguida, é feita uma breve análise do prefácio de Greimas e dos aspectos centrais de cada um dos onze estudos que constituem o livro. Finalmente, na conclusão, busca-se destacar sucintamente as perspectivas abertas por Sobre o sentido II e sua efetivação no desenvolvimento da teoria
A tensive interpretation of suspense in Continuity of Parks, by Julio Cortázar
No full textThis article examines, under the interpretation of tensive semiotics, the effect of sense of suspense in the short story Continuity of Parks, by Julio Cortázar. It takes as a starting point the ascending canonical tensive scheme of suspense, which foresees, as a tensive cipher, a gradual increase in intensity, while the intelligible dimension of the discourse would tend to decrease. Based on the definition of suspense presented by Claude Zilberberg (2011, p. 136) as "the extensive dilation of an intensive expectation", it is defended, in the analysis of this text, a complexification of the canonical tensive scheme, to the extent that the suspense stems from movements of enunciative positions that overlap in the text and that configure a singular tensive path, in which the intensive subdimensions of tempo and tonicity gain strength at the end of the short story, without, however, compromising the exercise of the presence of the cognitive, intelligible dimension of extensity, which remains active in the discursive field, even in the moment of surprise, thus keeping the reader-enunciatee in a state.Este artigo examina, sob o viés da Semiótica tensiva, o efeito de sentido de suspense no conto Continuidade dos parques, de Julio Cortázar. Toma-se como ponto de partida o esquema tensivo canônico ascendente do suspense, que prevê, como cifra tensiva, um aumento paulatino da intensidade, ao mesmo tempo em que a dimensão inteligível do discurso tenderia à diminuição. Com base na definição de suspense apresentada por Claude Zilberberg (2011, p. 136) como “a dilatação extensiva de uma espera intensiva”, defende-se, na análise desse conto, uma complexificação do esquema tensivo canônico, na medida em que o suspense decorre de um jogo de posições enunciativas que se sobrepõem no texto e que configura um percurso tensivo singular, no qual as subdimensões intensivas do andamento e da tonicidade ganham força no final do conto, sem, no entanto, comprometer o exercício da presença da dimensão cognitiva, inteligível, da extensidade, que permanece atuante no campo discursivo, mesmo no momento de surpresa, mantendo, assim, o leitor-enunciatário em um estado de suspensão, próprio da interrogação, mais do que da exclamação
On transexuality: rationality and emotional-volitional tone in the Notes for the Oral Vote of the Rapporteur in the Federal Supreme Court
No full textEste artigo tem como objetivo a análise das Anotações para o Voto Oral de Ministro Relator no STF a respeito do tratamento social a ser dispensado a transexuais. A fundação teórico-metodológica do trabalho é a Análise Dialógica do Discurso, baseada na obra de Mikhail Bakhtin e o Círculo. Por meio de noções bakhtinianas como discurso, relações dialógicas, gêneros do discurso, cronotopo e tom emocional-volitivo, o artigo busca a observação, o reconhecimento e a interpretação: i.) dos cronotopos em conflito; ii.) das Anotações como um gênero do discurso jurídico e iii.) do seu tom emocional-volitivo. Concluímos que conteúdo e forma se juntam na entonação valorativa social, privilegiando a esfera jurídica no modo de refletir e refratar a realidade.This article aims to analyze the Anotações para o Voto Oral de Ministro Relator no STF [Notes for the Oral Vote of the Rapporteur in the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court], on the treatment to be given to transexuals, through the Dialogical Discourse Analysis, based on the work of Mikhail Bakhtin and the Circle. By adopting Bakhtinian notions on discourse, dialogic relations, discourse genres, chronotope and emotional-volitional tone, we aim to observe, recognize and interpret: (i) the conflicting chronotopes; (ii) the genre specificities of the discourse in the Notes; and (iii) the emotional-volitional tone of the utterance. We conclude that content and form come together in the social evaluative intonation, privileging the legal sphere in the way of reflecting and refracting reality
