Taking language seriously: the teaching of Portuguese based on texts
One of the main ingredients for effective first language teaching is that teachers possess the theoretical categories and practical procedures in order to work well with language in use. This paper argues that future teachers, during their initial formation level at universities, must become familiar with categories, theoretical and procedural issues. The discussion points the role linguistic sciences must play in this scenario. In order to do so, three main questions are addressed: (i) What is supposed to be taught in regular education?; (ii) What is supposed to be taught in courses at universities concerning language?; (iii) How can linguistic sciences guide first language teaching? The first two questions are answered by analyzing the official national documents proposed by the Ministry of Education and the last question, by an examination on how a functional approach can contribute to first language education, since it is a theory that allows the analysis of texts, and, thus, penetrates in the life of the language
Teaching coherence in verbal and non-verbal texts: an alternative approach
Coherence is usually analysed by the textual linguistics paradigm (Fávero, 1991; Koch & Travaglia, 1997). We propose an alternative approach to this phenomenon in the basic education by establishing a dialogue between discursive semiotics (Greimas & Courtés, 2012, Greimas, 2014 [1983]) and dynamic semantics (see Stalnaker, 1999; Portner & Partee, 2002). From the first theoretical framework, we borrow the concepts of isotopy and veridiction contract; from the second one, we borrow the concepts of contradiction and that of common ground. The approximation of these two theories allow us to distinguish internal incoherences from external ones. The former emerge when there is a contradiction between ideas within the same text, while the latter emerge from a contradiction between a proposition of the text and the pool of common knowledge shared by the enunciation subjects. Potential applications of these concepts will be at first demonstrated in the analysis of simple texts extracted from social networks, then with visual texts and at last with more complex verbal texts. The didactic activities follow the principles of cooperation-based active learning (Pilati, 2017; Johnson et al., 1998; Johnson & Johnson, 2008). The proposed approach allows one to recognise the employment of incoherences for rhetorical, argumentative and aesthetic purposes
Based on the theoretical framework of Claude Zilberberg’s tensive grammar – particularly with reference to the central notion of event – as well as on the concept of fracture, conceived by A. J. Greimas, we attempted to carry out a brief study of the novel Near to the wild heart (1943), by Clarice Lispector, focusing on one of its most representative passages, whose nature allows us to investigate the development of extraordinary events that sometimes happen as abrupt, undesirable ruptures on the subject’s course, and sometimes present themselves as epiphanic moments of aesthetic contemplation of the world. We also aimed to highlight the way tensive adjustments made by the subject contribute to the regaining of discourse balance, by correcting insufficiencies and containing surpluses which result from the impact of the extraordinary event. These adjustments play a fundamental role in the restoration and maintenance of discourse progression. Lastly, we sought to demonstrate that fracture and event – usually taken as similar, though not identical, concepts, given the essentially aesthetic dimension of the former – are compared and equated in the text analyzed, providing the subject of the narrative with new knowledge of the world. This knowledge will form the very basis of the subject’s identity, thereby determining their interventions in the world and their actions over other subjects throughout the novel
About the concept of collective actor: the discursive construction of the demonstrator in Facebook posts of \u27Mídia Ninja\u27
In March 2015, there were protests against and in favor of the policies of the newly re-elected president Dilma Rousseff. The popular mobilization was intense and encouraged the National Congress to begin the impeachment process. From the Facebook posts by the group Media Narrativas Independentes, Jornalismo e Ação (Ninja Media), during the above mentioned period, this study develops the concept of collective actor. The notion of collective actant was first proposed by Greimas and Landowski (1981) in a semiotic analysis of legal discourse. Since then, it has been a concept that has not been explored more intensely by theorists of text and discourse. Through the discursive construction of Media Ninja, we developed the notion of a collective actor from the demonstrator actor. As theoretical framework, we assume the theoretical premises of Greimas and Courtés (2008) and the tensive unfoldings of Fontanille and Zilberberg (2001) and Zilberberg (2011). The methodology is a literature review supported by the semiotic analysis of two selected Facebook posts. The results indicate that there are two profiles for the demonstrator collective actor: the generalized and the personalized ones
Little Semiotics of memory
Based on tensive grammar proposed by Jacques Fontanille and Claude Zilberberg, the article focus on the theoretical contributions of presence field and event concepts for the study of autobiographical discourses. For this purpose, we observe the connections between memory and perception in José Saramago\u27s book As pequenas memórias (2006). The notions of memory of the past and event memory, developed in previous works, are useful to explain the gradations of the work impact on the enunciatee (presupposed reader). While the memory of the past privileges the legibility of the text, producing on the enunciatee the effect of detachment and comfort; the event-memory captures him by impact
Tensive enunciation in dialogue
By unveiling the sensible dimension of texts in an operational way and by proposing the perspective of a dynamic system, Zilberberg and others allowed some openings for greimasian semiotics that realigned the theory to contemporary challenges that would escape the scope of initial proposals. We follow a path that allows us to aim for an integrated view of the two enunciation conceptions already established in the theory - the enunciation as conceived by Greimas and the tensive enunciation. For that we pull the thread of the process of identity construction through the concept of junction to show how the subject of the greimasian enunciation can be united with the tensive praxis. We establish a parallel of the categories of person, space and time of the discursive level with the organizing perceptive deixis of the tensive flows, understood in the form of space-time depths organized from the perspective of an observer. We propose to relate time and space with temporality and spatiality, both elements that line off the situation of interlocution organized by an observer who at the discursive level controls the delegation of voices and in the tensive arena rules “despotically” the constitutive increases and decreases of our experience, the same increases and decreases that, not by chance, Zilberberg calls aspect
Claude Zilberberg: the aestheticized semiotics
Algirdas Julien Greimas (2014), when writing about believing and knowing, alludes briefly to the conversion of the epistemic act into interpretative doing and into discursive process. To do so, he compares the concept of aspect with the role of the reader observer. In the same work, when discussing the world semiosis, he alludes to a “patient” subject, that, other than that active or agent one, is confronted with the modal status of the contemplated object. Otherwise, Claude Zilberberg (2011) anchors the notion of aspect in a tensive space, while he creates conditions for the description of the subject as the one that presents itself hit by an extraordinary event. In our reflections, we compare how issues of aspectual processing and of a “patient” subject formation, come to light within the framework of narrativity, resonate in tensive semiotics. Meanwhile, we also confront styles sketched in the discursive genres and configured as authorial styles. We are moved by the desire to honor Zilberberg, who, having recently departed from this life, leaves us with an epistemological legacy which allows us to understand the aesthesia which constitutes the language, the subject and the discourses, all coming from the most diverse fields of knowledge
The poetics of image according to Bachelard
The author also tackles the theory of subvalences – tonicity, tempo, spatiality and temporality – as well as the role played by the \u27syntactic styles\u27 when it comes to the choices made by the subject of enunciation in a given utterance
Towards a Semiotics directed by methodology
One of persistent difficulties in semiotics is the gap installed between the theoretical speculations and the epistemological reflections, on the one hand, and the methods and the results of data description and interpretation, on the other hand. In order to solve the problem noted, we propose in this paper to invert the natural order of priorities, and to take into consideration that the semiotics should be piloted by the methodology and not by the epistemology directly. To this first position, we add two criteria: (i) the method capability to be able to report the singularity of the analyzed objects, (ii) the articulation of this method with the neighboring disciplines that deal with the same objects. Therefore, our proposition will be articulated in two moments: (1) a detailed examination, in the language theory, of conditions in which is possible, at the same time of the form structuration, to take into account the substantial variations, (2) a reflection, based on results from the first point, about the practical singularity treatment at the interface between the semiotics and the ethno-anthropology. The whole is a contribution in favor of a controlled diversification of methodological regimes in semiotic
Some reflections about the role of linguistic and discursive studies in teaching and learning in school
In this paper we discuss the role of linguistic and discursive studies, particularly the study of discursive semiotics, in teaching and learning practices. We show that some of the knowledge developed in discursive semiotics about intolerance in and of language, about the constitution of acceptance speeches, contrary to prejudicial and hateful ones, and mainly discourses about the truth and lie in texts is a good path to deal with these matters in schools. The main reason for this is that, in order for there to be acceptance of social differences, in order for social and discursive change to have great impact, in order for children and teen to learn how to read internet text and discern the lie behind most of them, it is paramount that this body of knowledge lead to critical thinking, because, without schools, expected discursive and social changes simply do not happen or do not have the desired impact
