With this article we intend to pay homage to the creator of the tensive semiotics, Claude Zilberberg, deceased recently. We try to demonstrate the scope of the central thesis of his theoretical postulations, that of the omnipresence of affection in any and all discursive products, from the arts to the logics of science. Indeed, affective entities have a high relevance in the economy of meaning, since, as we shall try to show, they even measure the degree of internal cohesion of the three types of argument identified by Peirce: deductive, inductive, and abductive. These three types of argument differ from one another according to the degree of salience of the conclusion within the argumentative structure and the power of doxality referring to the propositions that prepare the conclusion

Placenta: the dimension of the words. Clarice Lispector’s meaning of it and her instant-now-halleluja

The article discusses the linguistic abstraction in Lispector’s Água Viva, according to European semiotics. It is based on the author\u27s strategy of inserting, in the enunciation-enunciated, the marks of a creative process that resulted in a continuous reading grid, without divisions in chapters. A simulacrum of enunciation being enunciated. The author does this by writing by sketching: creating a more opened meaning effects to interpretations, surrounding them by denying the shared crystallization erected by the dictionary’s tradition - that relegates words to closure. In the book, the fundamental semantic opposition between life and death ceases to exist. Both are merged into a single object with status of subject - which takes the actor of enunciation in a metaphor of the new signification of the words. The narrative is interested in what is described as it, which is not ontological and cannot be named. In this paper, Lispector’s book is taken as a rich source of semiotic reflection on a general and abstract project that guarantees to the language the possibilities of semantic overcoming of any limits, showing the strength of syntagmatic constructions of discourse in the course of signification in which affection is underlying the categorization of the lexeme

Hieroglyph: a concept in the light of Semiotics

In this article, we intend to discuss the semiotic processes of resignification and transfiguration of the sign from the specific case of hieroglyphs, which illustrate, in their historical reception in the West, a kind of narrative interpretation based on a certain perception of non-arbitrariness in the relation between the sign and its object. Therefore, we will talk about sign displacements in historical and cultural contexts, and in the new semantic coverings that they can acquire beyond their traditional spheres of use and the social practices they denote. We will see, finally, how this revisited concept applies to the reading of different poetic processes, to the aesthetic phenomena proper to verbal language and to the uses of rhetoric extended to the field of signification

Complexity in the tensive hypothesis of Claude Zilberberg

Complexity occupies a prominent place in the tensive hypothesis formulated by Claude Zilberberg. The focus of this article is to promote, as a tribute, a reflection on the theoretical treatment given by him to this phenomenon. Zilberberg (2010, 2011a) assumes a "development complexity" that allows the coexistence or "collaboration" between discrete and gradual units and that maintains the theoretical coherence of the concept of tensiveness in the semiotic description. Despite being a conciliatory position, this theoretical movement represents for many the passage from a semiotics of difference to a semiotics of interval. However, it should be noted that the coexistence of magnitudes should not imply exactly graded operations in the description of the sensible, let alone the subordination of the operations opposed to those considered scalar, as some interpretations of tensive semiotics suggest. Zilberberg’s theoretical formulations allow us to think of a simulation of graduality through a complexification of the discontinuous dimension, in which certain analytic operations dilute the boundaries between the discrete units, without, however, eliminating them completely. It is, in our opinion, a gradation of difference, by another differential operation, of a metalinguistic order. With the adoption of this view, complexity would not give rise to any substantialist or ontologizing interpretation and would gain epistemological status as an instance of mediation between semiotic approaches that direct their attention to the dimension of both the continuous and the discontinuous perspectives. Moreover, the postulate of difference, a sine qua non of scientific intelligibility, remains intact in the description of affections by the bias of tensivity

The weakening of democracy in Venezuela: the Afiuni case

This study analyses two speech events where president Chávez informs that he has incarcerated a judge. He demands the maximum penalty, because she has unfulfilled his desire of maintaining a banker in prison. With this incursion into the judiciary, the president weakens the democratic principle of separation of powers (Brewer-Carías, 2012). I follow Van D¼k (2008) in his notion of context and Shuy’s (2013) forensic linguistics, with an ethnographic base, and descending from the speech event to minor language unities. There are two participants: the executive formed by the president and his companions at the table. A compliant wide auditorium represented by the hearers present in the room – including the President of the Supreme Court of Justice – and the country at large, who receives the message by radio and television. The first has absolute power, shown by the discursive features found in this study. The second is dominated by the first; in fact, the General Attorney of the Republic is not on the podium, but is part of the auditorium. The discursive features show the power of the president, who dominates the rest of the powers. The discourse of the president evidences an authoritative form of government

Semiotics and education: possibilities for reading work in Fundamental Education

Considering that reading teaching is one of the biggest challenges of the Brazilian school, we propose - in our masters research - to carry out a study that would contribute to an effective approach to the text, with regard to the teaching and development of reading proficiency in 9th grade students. Therefore, we performed an action research, in light of Algirdas Julien Greimas\u27s Semiotic (French line) and the reading strategies proposed by Solé (1998). In this article, we present one of the activities implemented in a 9th grade elementary school class of a public school in the municipality of Igarapé-Açu, Pará. The results showed that, despite its complexity, Semiotics becomes effective when oriented didactically for the processing of the senses in reading activities. Moreover, it was confirmed that, even though not known as a theory for reading teaching - especially in basic education - Semiotics injects a different perspective at school than those commonly used by teachers in the classroom, becoming another possibility. as a theoretical and methodological resource for the teaching of reading in school contexts

    Complexity of repetition

The vast presence of repetition in texts invites multiple approaches. On this article, we investigate the relation of repetition and the construction of tension, expectation, and, finally, a textual rhythm. To do so, we inquire on its role as the manifestation of a manifested structure, which is organized around the notions of aspect and tempo. Such configuration is thus drawn up by means of the investigation of extreme cases: impossible texts. We then compare repetition with the mechanisms behind isotopy and explanation and argue for a difference in the configuration of tensive styles, where repetition, initially lacking stress and direction, later produces an ascending style of tension due to the excessive permanence on the same unstressed state. Finally, the structure under scrutiny is approached from the perspective of the text as a whole and repetition is treated as a factor on the construction of the evolution regime of texts, which is seen as progressing in small, localized circles, in large arches (taking up the whole text), or by intertwining circles in a spiral progression. The bond between what is lacking and what surprises which is brought to light by the inner workings of repetition seems to bring about a tensive solution to the opposition between classical French school semiotics and the point of view inaugurated by Claude Zilberberg

The catenation and tensive structures as patterns for the semiotic square

The aim of this article: to explore a suggestion of Zilberberg in an en passant speculation, when he proposes that “the categorical presupposes the progressive, that establishes the first one” and that “the categorical is reached by the suspension of the catenary terms and conservation of the extreme terms” (1981, p. 10). Catenary – from the Latin catena [chain] – is defined in dictionaries as a curve in which hangs, under the influence of their own weight, a thread suspended by the extremities. This geometric figure allows to “reflect” the tensive gradient – the figure of the letter L, with intensive vertical axis and extensive horizontal axis – coupled to its mirror (an inverted L), a second intensive and extensive axis. The first L would respond by the “tonicity” (in the intensive verticality) and its “degradation” (in the horizontal horizontality) of the first term (S1); the inverted L would respond by the tonicity and degradation of the second term (S2). In short, the tensive gradient is doubled to accommodate the two categorical terms of the semiotic square, which thus becomes tensive (or “tensivises”)

The street harassment’s political dimension: mapping applications as smart cities initiatives

The street harassment mapping applications that began to emerge from 2014 in Brazil can be understood, at a first glance, as smart city initiatives. With these initiatives, the population and other social instances can participate in solving city problems. Such applications would help to combat street harassment and, consequently, improve the conditions for urban mobility of women. By analyzing the meanings produced by the semiotic texts of the applications, can we consider them as smart city initiatives? More specifically, does their discursive doing provide the appropriate political dimension to transform the narrative of harassment by promoting urban forms-oflife with more citizenship for women? To answer these questions, we analyze in this article – based on the canonical concepts of discursive semiotics – four street harassment mapping applications. The theoretical approach also operates an understanding of smart cities as helpers in the achievement of the object of value of society. In this case, such object should be the fight against street harassment. The analysis shows that not all applications accomplish the same performance, suggesting that the promotion of public policies is hampered by a repeated and distorted view of the problem

Contributions from Semiotics to the practices of multiliteracies

The article takes the semiotics as its theoretical framework, the general theory of meaning that supports the approach of any text or social practice through the use of consistent methodological instruments, in order to reflect on the multiliteracies. Such concept is considered to be settled upon two main axes: the relationship between languages in the production of syncretic texts and the social practices in which they are put into social circulation. To illustrate the analysis possibilities and the contributions to teaching that stem from them, the article tackles, based on the levels of pertinence proposed by Fontanille and the concept of syncretism, the teaching of reading at school, going through different genres such as news, book covers, blogs, narrative adventures and online petitions. The analysis aims to play a part in facing the challenges imposed by the texts, objects and contemporary practices of teaching reading. It is also intended to deepen the dialog between semiotics and the theories concerning teaching and multiliteracies
