The theory is then modified by applying cognitive map referring to the principle of signification system. The data used were obtained from the ritual speech Onen Fen Nahat Nitu 'prayer for offering souls' which is grouped into the ritual of death. Data interpretation uses cognitive map instrument to describe the visual image of Boti people's point of view. In this way, the result of the supernatural signifying system 'amuf' is realized by the lingual pronoun of singular second person ho 'you', that is the allomorph of ko 'you' (if it presents as an object/personal pronoun stating ownership/genitive/possessive). The paradigmatic network analysis describes supernatural features of amuf 'ancestral spirits' in 10 paradigmatic relations derived from amuf/ho, namely: (1) ho meitik fani mnahat bi ho lanan 'you bring provisions for your journey'; (2) ho he mfani neu hit ama uis neno 'you go back to father uis neno' (3) ho he mfani neu hit kua mnasi es nane 'you go back to the old village'; (4) ho simo nae ho pa 'ma ho nama' you take your rights and portion '; (5) ho he mnao nei bi tabu i 'you go now'; (6) leka ho mtia hit uam mnasi if you get to our old village '; (7) ho mueku mok ale 'hit amuf sin' you meet our ancestors' (8) ho mnaiti mutonan sin, onen neu kai bi pah manifu i 'you meet them, pray for us'; (9) ho mnao 'you go'; (10) ho naikais amnikan kai ok-oke 'you do not forget us all'

This descriptive qualitative research is done based on slave and slavery problem in Indonesia in literary work. It is executed by using deconstruction technique, and it has the goals to describe: (1) The relation between colonials and colonialized people in Surapati novel and (2) The resistance of slave to the employer, and (3) The characteristics of Surapati novel in postcolonial perspective. The result of this research shows that the relation between colonials and colonialized people, it is between Dutch and Indonesian indigene is an unbalanced relation. Dutch’s domination toward indigene is shown through Dutch’s prejudices toward indigene, animal stereotyping to indigent, and skin color discrimination which is constructed by colonial. Dutch viewed themselves are more civilized than indigene because they have white skin color, otherwise indigene have black skin color, or not white. This point of view is reconstructed in their mind and attitude, so there is a stereotype that indigene is uncivilized, negligent, lazy, and like an animal (monkey). The impact of this domination (discrimination, racism, and marginalization) makes indigene perform resistance. Resistance is done by slave/indigene in form of mimicry, and mockery that mocking Dutch colonial as an effort to destroy their power. The mimicry and mockery show the hybrid attitude of slave/indigene, so the discourse that is constructed in Surapati novel is ambiguous. So that, in postcolonial perspective this novel can be said having ambiguous characteristics. In one side it constructs opponent discourse, but in another side it is hegemonies by colonial discourse

Reading Wilde's Vera as an expression of the dramatist's evolution

    Get PDF
Wilde’s early plays are tragic and political in nature. He writes in his early career as an evolving dramatist as with a sense of missionary and experimental zeal. Vera’s importance in the Wildean canon is that it traces the early elements of the formative mould in which Wilde later wrote his satires and brilliant comedies. The critical essence of the play is its serious, tragic and political tone that Wilde converts to farce in his later career. These are the points that this paper touches upon to conclude that the early Wilde canon is a reflection both of the later Wildean farce and the very early Wildean erudition.  &nbsp

Representation of Bali in tourism advertisement videos

    Get PDF
Employing the Halliday’s theory of transitivity (1985), this study explores the representation of Balinese religion, culture, and nature in the Bali tourism advertisements videos produced by Bali’s Tourism Office, Bali Tourism Board and Ministry of Tourism of Indonesian Republic. The study reveals that the language of the advertisements mostly describes Bali in terms of material process, mental and relational process.  In terms of relational process, the beauty of Bali’s culture and nature is capitalized and portrayed as having certain kind of qualities: indicated by the use of adjectives typical to tourism advertisement such as mesmerizing, exotic, unique, etc. and it is constantly defined as paradise. A stark difference, however, occurs in terms of the participants of the clause. In the advertisement produced by the Bali Tourism office, the participants having the role of ‘actors’,  ‘senser’  and ‘carrier’,  are  Balinese people, Bali’s nature, and culture. The advertiser, taking the position of ‘we’, the Balinese, speaks to the world, explaining their home island, culture and belief.  On the other hand, the more ‘mainstream’ advertisements of Bali, give more to the prospective tourists, addressed as ‘you’.  Here the tourists are the actors and sensers of everything Bali can offer.  Bali is depicted as purely a travel destination that can satisfy the visitors and in the position of passive ‘phenomenon’ and ‘goals’. The advertisers are taking the position of ‘the travel agent’, the third party that promotes Bali.[1] [1] Some parts of this article have been presented in KOLITA 15, The Annual Linguistic Conference of Atmajaya University, April 2017
