Syllabic constraints in ekegusii borrowing: an optimality perspective
A language’s syllabic structure is key in determining linguistic borrowing. Research on loanword phonology indicates that when languages borrow segments, these borrowed segments undergo systematic adaptations which involve phonological structures at various levels and one of these is the syllabic level. Because languages have varied syllabic structures which will range from very simple to complex, a language’s syllabic structure will trigger repair strategies that ensure that its language phonotactics are not violated. However, how the syllable in Ekegusii constrains borrowing from English has not been adequately explained. This article that was based on Optimality Theory’s constraint approach examined how Ekegusii’s syllable structure constrains borrowing from the English language. The data used in this article was extracted from Mose’s doctoral study. The findings revealed that the Ekegusii syllable structure imposed various constraints spread across the three patterns which are permissible in the language. The specific constraints included: prohibition of cluster consonants, diphthongs or triphthongs, no coda consonants, and complex onsets, as well as syllables, must have onsets that were lowly ranked in the language. The article concluded that syllabic constraints determined that whatever was mapped to Ekegusii adhered to its syllable structure
The Vietnamese greetings in Mekong Delta, Vietnam
From long time ago, the Vietnamese have had the saying: ‘L?i chào cao h?n mâm c?’. It implied that a greeting was highly respected than being invited to enjoy a big meal although food was very rare after the wars in Vietnam. In recent years, studies of various levels have been carried out in the field of linguistics, based on the lexical-semantic and grammatical features of the language. In particular, effective work is being done to study the linguistic features of artistic sources on folklore. In addition to proverbs, phraseologies, there have been scientific works and studies devoted to the linguistic features of wishes and applause (applause-curses). These are being studied by folklorists as cultural units. In particular, there have been studies on the names of epics, fairy tales, wedding ceremonies, linguistic features of wedding songs, lexical and semantic analysis of Uzbek folk riddles. These cultural units are characteristic of oral discourse, although they are found in both formal and formal literature. Naturally, to research such a subject, it is necessary to know the way of thinking of that people. Valence adjusting operations in modern Uyghur
Valence has been considered as both a semantic and syntactic notion in linguistic study. Through valence adjusting, interchanges between semantic roles and grammatical roles would happen to facilitate the language. For example, increasing of syntactic valence can upgrade a peripheral participate to center stage of the clause. Languages typically have various ways of adjusting valence of a clauses. As is the case for many languages, Uyghur possesses rich morph syntactic means through which the valence of a clause can be changed. Uyghur adjusts valence through voice, as it is one of kinds of universal operations to adjust valence. However, being an agglutinative language, Uyghur exhibits many morphological means to adjust valence. This paper analyzes valence adjusting operations in modern Uyghur grammar
