The Benefits of Open Banking to Consumers, Banks and FinTech Companies.
This thesis presents a qualitative grounded theory investigation into the possible benefits
of open banking for consumers, traditional banks and FinTech companies, with the study
exploring the impact of open banking regulation on the banking industry as regulatory
actions occur globally, underpinning rapid innovation in banking, and effectively
supporting the rise of the FinTech phenomenon.
The general views held by traditional bankers on open banking are explored together with
the paths available to them, as they seek compliance with recently issued data sharing
regulation, and what this may mean for consumers and FinTech companies.
The role played by FinTech companies is also explored, including the possible benefits
they derive and contribute to banks and consumers. The benefits to consumers are
presented based on the findings and the literature, along with the benefits to banks and
FinTech companies, based on the research.
Purposive sampling was employed, arriving at a representative sample of top banking and
FinTech leaders against which a subjectivist approach application of semi-structured
interviews was administered. Data analysis and coding generated 4 themes from which
emergent theory arose, forming part of the contribution to knowledge. This emergent
theory argues that the current structure of bank business models appears unsustainable
under consumer-led pressure for innovative and convenient, independent mobile based
products; to respond, bank and FinTech collaboration is key.
The theory provides a basis for recommendations that form contributions to practice,
designed to support banks as they navigate the transformative nature of the open banking
regulation before them. These contributions take the form of a two-part model integrated
strategic review process by which banks can make better informed decisions, ensuring
improved sustainability and systemic stability. Practice recommendations were also
provided for the consideration of FinTech companies.
Consumers benefit from the posited contribution to practice as the industry reshapes to
specifically meet their needs based on collaboration, reduced systemic costs, increased
innovation and just sufficient regulation.
Whilst regulators were not a focus of this research, significant findings emerged from the
data which have been presented, along with a contribution to practice by way of a set of
recommendations for the consideration of regulators seeking to develop an appropriate
response to the rapid innovation coming from the FinTech companies

Non-invasive screening of breast cancer from fingertip smears - a proof of concept study
This collection includes MALDI MS filedata underpinning the study by Russo et al entitled "Non-invasive screening of breast cancer from fingertip smears : a proof of concept study" and published in Scientific Reports. In particular the files correspond to the acquisition of MALDI MS spectra from the fingertip smears of 15 patients split in three diagnostic catergories: healthy, early breast cancer and metastatic. Mass Spectra data have been supplied in three formats: raw spectra (in the proprietary Waters Corp Synapt G2 HDMS format), exported as text files after processing (.txt) and as the associated processed dataset that has been used for downsteam ML (.csv). Additionally, a Jupyter notebook containing all the data pre-processing steps, and also the subsequent undersupervised learning analysis
Torso Shape Improves the Prediction of Body Fat Magnitude and Distribution: Raw data
This dataset contains raw information obtained from 93 participants in an investigation into whether body shape parameters can improve predictions of body fat and distribution.
The data includes anthropmetrics of the torso, arms and legs, body volumes, surface areas, torso shape parameters and body fat percentage and distribution (given as the trunk:peripheral fat ratio)
Matlab files are included which process the data and also calculate new metrics that were used in analysis (average arm volume, for example). The statistics and neural network toolboxes are used in calculations
Applying behavioural science to promoting uptake of family hubs services - Wakefield project
The Wakefield project focused on evaluating a new communications strategy to advertise both ‘Team Around the School’ (TAS) support and family hub services. The communications strategy was designed by Wakefield Council and already in the process of being implemented at the beginning of the project. The strategy was designed for implementation by schools, who were supported in phased release of specific information and the provision of content to embed in school websites. Qualitative interviews were conducted with parents of children attending the schools where the new communications strategy was piloted (n = 7) and parents of children attending comparison schools which were not implementing the new communications strategy (n = 5). Interviews were also conducted with staff responsible for implementing the strategy in the pilot schools (n = 3). Parent interviews elicited barriers and facilitators to accessing TAS and family hub support to enable comparison of general awareness of the services in the parents recruited from the pilot vs. non-pilot schools. Staff interviews elicited staff experiences of implementing the strategy, and their perceptions of the strategy and its effectiveness. Interviews were transcribed and subjected to a thematic framework analysis using the TDF to identify barriers and facilitators. Findings indicated that generally, parents from the pilot schools appeared to have greater awareness than those from non-pilot schools that their child’s school could be a source of support for difficulties with their child. This suggests that the new communications strategy had a positive effect on knowledge of available support. Staff member reports also chimed with this – staff felt that the communications strategy had helped raise awareness of family support services. Findings also highlighted that despite the communications strategy, parents may not understand or remember jargon or details about how different services fit together. Barriers to accessing support when needed included negative emotions around needing support, and fear of social services’ involvement. These powerful factors are unlikely to be adequately addressed via communications alone and would require supportive conversations with trusted persons. Recommendations include simplifying the ‘call to action’ element of the communications strategy, and considering how trusting relationships can be built with families in advance of support being needed, such that accessing support at the point of need is facilitated

Studies in low energy nuclear physics at HIGS 16O
The deposit contains data obtained during experiments at the HIGS facility at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL), Duke University, in collaboration with the University of Connecticut (Uconn). The experimental work was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The data for these experiments were obtained from 2009 to 2011 and exact details of when each data file was generated can be found in the attached experiment runbooks. Data and analysis codes needed to analyse the data are contained within the archive.
