A clinical trial evaluating the feasibility and acceptability of orthotic shorts for walking function in people with multiple sclerosis.
Research design
This study was a mixed methods feasibility study conducted for the principal investigator’s (PI’s) PhD studies. Only quantitative data is archived to protect the identity of participants. The study used a crossover design investigating the effects of two different pairs of shorts, one designed as an orthotic pair and one a placebo pair. Each pair were evaluated for their immediate objective effect and their acceptability to participants following two weeks’ wear at home.
Data are included for the following variables:
• GAITRite data for spatiotemporal gait parameters, available:
o as Excel sheets downloaded from the GAITRite system for each test and
o as a summary sheet of step width, step length, stride time, % of gait in double support, self-selected gait speed and cadence.
• IMU data, which is provided as:
o Excel sheets of acceleration and angular velocity for each test and
o as h5 files, which is the file type produced by the Opal sensor software. The h5 samples were those sent to Matthew Brodie for analysis for Visits’ 3 and 5 only
o a summary sheet of the IMU data following analysis by Matthew Brodie.
• ABC-UK and MSWS-12 data available as scans of the original paper forms and as a spreadsheet of summary data.
• T25FW and dual task cost, data are available for each participant and as a summary sheet, all contained with one Excel file, stored with the Summary Data sheets
Research Use in Schools Collaboration, 2016-2019
This project includes a portfolio of research examining research use and Knowledge Mobilisation in social policy and practice, and particularly in education. The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) commissioned and convened the research, with specific research teams conducting the research activities. The project include: 1) Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) evaluation of different approaches to disseminating and communicating research evidence. The co-design of a psychoeducational complex intervention for children and young people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
The study team have created a prototype of an ADHD psychoeducation 'magazine' for young people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The term 'magazine' is used as information is provided in the form of activities often found in children's magazines. The resource is aimed at primary school-aged children with ADHD.
This study aims to improve the current prototype of the psychoeducation magazine by adopting a co-design methodology (that is, to design the magazine with the young people, for the young people with input from key stakeholders: parents/guardians). A psychoeducation magazine is a magazine that educates an individual about a specific condition (e.g. ADHD). Information may include what ADHD stands for, what it means, how to explain the diagnosis to friends and family etc
Differences in older adult walking football initiation and maintenance influences across respondent characteristics: a cross-sectional survey
Despite health benefits gained from physical activity and sport participation, older adults are least likely to be active. This study investigates what influences walking football initiation and maintenance in 50–75-year-olds (n=439) across gender, socioeconomic status, number of health conditions and weekly PA level. It also considers the relationship between participant characteristics and influences, and the intention to continue play after a forced break (Covid-19 Pandemic). Results of a cross-sectional survey in the UK found those with two or more health conditions rated social influences significantly higher in both initiation and maintenance phases, than participants with no health conditions. Regression analysis found a positive walking football culture and perceived use of maintenance resources contributed to the intention to return to play after Coronavirus restrictions eased. VISTA, Visual and Inertial Sensor for recogniTion of human Activities
Over the last years, human activity recognition has gained considerable success due to the importance to understand what a person is doing during normal daily activities.
The correct understanding of human-being activities is playing a fundamental role also in the field of Human-robot interaction. Indeed, robots can collaborate with humans and help people to perform their actions.
The recognition of activities can be achieved by exploiting different kinds of sensors, such as inertial or visual ones. However, no single modality sensor can cope with all the situations that occur in the real world.
The VISTA dataset as a unique compromise for the recognition of activities of daily living between datasets based on visual sensors and the ones based on the inertial ones. Particularly, the unique values of the VISTA dataset are:
Daily Actions and Activities. For VISTA actions selection we referred to the Cornell Activity Dataset (CAD-60) and the MSR Daily Activity 3D Dataset. Ten actions in common between the two datasets were selected. Then, these actions were combined in five activities (i.e. scene) of daily living.
Multimodal data. VISTA dataset proposes the combination of RGBD cameras and inertial sensors positioned on the fingers and the wrist of the subjects. This allows creating a complete and heterogeneous dataset, in which the big movements of the body can be captured by the visual sensors and the fine ones by the inertial ones.
Multiple views. One of the drawbacks of using a vision system is the camera occlusion that can occur if the subject is not positioned frontally to the camera. VISTA dataset provides the simultaneous video record from two different perspectives, frontal and lateral, with the purpose to investigate whether the use of a multimodal approach could improve the accuracy of the recognition when the subject is not in a frontal position, thus to mimic more realistic operative conditions.
Human-Robot Interaction. VISTA dataset was acquired from the interaction with the Pepper robot. The participants interacted with the robot and performed what it was explaining and requiring.
We envisage several applications in which our dataset can be used. For instance, action and scene recognition, analysis of transition between actions, development of customized machine learning algorithms, comparison of approaches using different sensor modalities, just to name a few. The implications of such research efforts are important in the field of activity recognition. but also in the field of Human-robot interaction, since the understanding of the actions and the context can improve the robot perception ability
The health benefits of volunteering at a free, weekly, 5 km event in the UK: a cross- sectional study of volunteers at parkrun
Objectives
The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of volunteering at parkrun and the motives for first participating as a volunteer, compared to those who do not volunteer.
Methods
A cross-sectional survey was emailed to parkrun registrants, resulting in 60,680 survey returns from parkrun participants who self-identified as volunteers (n=681), runners/walkers who volunteered (n=21,928) or runners/walkers who did not volunteer (38,071). Surveys were matched to respondents’ parkrun registration information (gender, age, index of multiple deprivation score, activity level at registration) and parkrun statistics (years registered, number of volunteering occasions, number of runs or walks). This study focussed on two survey questions: motives for first participating in parkrun as a volunteer (26 measures) or runner/walker (11 measures) and the perceived health and wellbeing impact from volunteering (17 measures) or running/walking (11 measures) at parkrun. Groups were compared using Mann Witney U, χ2 tests and effect size calculations.
Results
More than half of volunteers were female and were predominantly from a white ethnic background. Compared to runners/walkers who volunteered, those who volunteered exclusively were older, more likely to be retired and more likely to be inactive at registration. Volunteers were motivated by wanting to give something back to the community (45.8%), to feel part of a community (26.1%), to help people (24.5%) or because they were unable to run (21.1%). Runners/walkers who volunteered were more likely to volunteer because they felt obliged to (49.3%). A large proportion of volunteers reported improvements to connections with others such as feeling part of a community (83.5%), the number of new people met (85.2%) and time spent with friends (45.2%). While mental and physical health were ranked low as a motive for participating in parkrun by volunteers (4.7% and 2.7% respectively), 54.5 and 29.3% of volunteers respectively reported improvements.
Conclusions
Volunteers were much less likely than runners/walkers who also volunteer to be motivated by a feeling of obligation or moral duty, but equally likely to volunteer to help people or feel part of a community. Large proportions of parkrun participants identifying exclusively as volunteers reported improvements to connections with others due to volunteering at parkrun. While improving mental and physical health was ranked low as a motive for volunteers, over half reported improvements due to volunteering at parkrun to mental health, and a quarter to physical health. The data shows that volunteering at parkrun without participating as a runner or walker can deliver some of the components of the Five Ways to Wellbeing advocated by the NHS. The characteristics of parkrun (free, regular, local, accessible and optional) make it a viable social prescribing offer that can be used as a model for other community events seeking to attract volunteers
