    An acute bout of cycling does not induce compensatory responses in pre-menopausal women not using hormonal contraceptives

    There is a clear need to improve understanding of the effects of physical activity and exercise on appetite control. Therefore, the acute and short-term effects (three days) of a single bout of cycling on energy intake and energy expenditure were examined in women not using hormonal contraceptives. Sixteen active (n = 8) and inactive (n = 8) healthy pre-menopausal women completed a randomised crossover design study with two conditions (exercise and control). The exercise day involved cycling for one hour (50% of maximum oxygen uptake) and resting for two hours, whilst the control day comprised three hours of rest. On each experimental day participants arrived at the laboratory fasted, consumed a standardised breakfast and an ad libitum pasta lunch. Food diaries and combined heart rate-accelerometer monitors were used to assess free-living food intake and energy expenditure, respectively, over the subsequent three days. There were no main effects or condition (exercise vs control) by group (active vs inactive) interaction for absolute energy intake (P > 0.05) at the ad libitum laboratory lunch meal, but there was a condition effect for relative energy intake (P = 0.004, ηp2 = 0.46) that was lower in the exercise condition (1417 ± 926 kJ vs. 2120 ± 923 kJ). Furthermore, post-breakfast satiety was higher in the active than in the inactive group (P = 0.005, ηp2 = 0.44). There were no main effects or interactions (P > 0.05) for mean daily energy intake, but both active and inactive groups consumed less energy from protein (14 ± 3% vs. 16 ± 4%, P = 0.016, ηp2 = 0.37) and more from carbohydrate (53 ± 5% vs. 49 ± 7%, P = 0.031, ηp2 = 0.31) following the exercise condition. This study suggests that an acute bout of cycling does not induce compensatory responses in active and inactive women not using hormonal contraceptives, while the stronger satiety response to the standardised breakfast meal in active individuals adds to the growing literature that physical activity helps improve the sensitivity of short-term appetite control

    The impact of parkrun on inactive populations in the UK

    Physical inactivity is one of the most significant contributors to chronic disease and is a global public health priority. parkrun is a free, timed, weekly five-kilometre event that takes place in public spaces across the world with over 1 million people having completed a parkrun in the UK. This research analysed the demographics of those attending UK parkruns and showed that the number of parkrunners is growing by approximately 310k per year. parkrun attracts more women than men with a peak in numbers at age 11 and between 25 and 45, reflecting its attraction for families. Registrants were asked the number of times per week they had undertaken exercise for 30 minutes or more at moderate intensity in the previous four weeks (<1 to ≥4 times) with inactivity defined as achieving less than 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week. Previously inactive parkrunners, ( <1 per week) represented up to 6.9% of the total and is growing at 0.46% per year. In contrast, the most active groups decreased in their proportion. People from all activity groups continued to complete parkruns five years after their first with the least active group completing more parkruns per year than the most active group. Data showed that there were 32,100 parkrunners in 2016 who identified themselves as inactive (<1 per week) at registration with 69,327 being borderline active (≈1 per week). This research suggests that parkrun has potential to reach and engage inactive communities in long-term physical activity. Its scalability and reach across the life-course confirms its potential as a public health intervention. Further research will explore the levels of activity of parkrunners outside parkrun, the impact of parkrun on activity, the barriers to participation, the impact on health, the effect of social deprivation on engagement, and parkrun’s economic value

    "HCI Lessons From PlayStation VR"

    PlayStation VR has quickly built up a significant user-base of over a million headsets and its own ecosystem of games across a variety of genres. These games form part of a rapidly evolving testing ground for design solutions which can usefully inform HCI design for virtual reality. This paper reviews every PlayStation VR title released in the first three months of its lifecycle in order to identify emerging themes for locomotion. These themes are discussed with respect to the lessons learned as part of the on-going development of an Environmental Narrative game for PlayStation VR as part of the Horizon 2020 REVEAL project

    Rapid, continuous movement between nodes as an accessible virtual reality locomotion technique

    The confounding effect of player locomotion on the vestibulo-ocular reflex is one of the principal causes of motion sickness in immersive virtual reality. Continuous motion is particularly problematic for stationary user configurations, and teleportation has become the prevailing approach for providing accessible locomotion. Unfortunately, teleportation can also increase disorientation and reduce a player’s sense of presence within a VR environment. This paper presents an alternative locomotion technique designed to preserve accessibility while maintaining feelings of presence. This is a node-based navigation system which allows the player to move between predefined node positions using a rapid, continuous, linear motion. An evaluation was undertaken to compare this locomotion technique with commonly used, teleportation-based and continuous walking approaches. Thirty-six participants took part in a study which examined motion sickness and presence for each technique, while navigating around a virtual house using PlayStation VR. Contrary to intuition, we show that rapid movement speeds reduce players’ feelings of motion sickness as compared to continuous movement at normal walking speed

    These data were collected November 2016 at Bangor University, Bangor, Wales, UK, as part of the Reading Digital Fiction project study on hyperlinks. Nineteen people participated in the study. The significant data collection consisted of an audio-recorded structured reading of a piece of digital fiction and an associated structured interview. The digital fiction was The Futographer by Lyle Skains (2016): http://lyleskains.com/Twine/The_Futographer.html The transcripts are anonymised transcriptions of the structured reading session for each participant.     These data were collected in November 2015 at Bank Street Arts Gallery in Sheffield, UK, as part of the Reading Digital Fiction project study on immersion. Fourteen people participated in the study in total. The data collection consisted of four audio-recorded structured discussions of a piece of digital fiction which was exhibited at Bank Street Arts as a installation and which participants had experienced before the discussion. The digital fiction was WALLPAPER by Andy Campbell and Judi Alston (2015). The transcripts are anonymized transcriptions of four discussion groups

    Data from: Effects of a 12-week aerobic exercise intervention on eating behaviour, food cravings and 7-day energy intake and energy expenditure in inactive men

    This study examined effects of 12 weeks of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on eating behaviour, food cravings and weekly energy intake and expenditure in inactive men. Eleven healthy men (mean ± SD: age, 26 ± 5 years; body mass index, 24.6 ± 3.8 kg/m2; maximum oxygen uptake, 43.1 ± 7.4 mL/kg/min) completed the 12-week supervised exercise programme. Body composition, health markers (e.g. blood pressure), eating behaviour, food cravings and weekly energy intake and expenditure were assessed before and after the exercise intervention. There were no intervention effects on weekly free-living energy intake (p=0.326, d=-0.12) and expenditure (p=0.799, d=0.04), or uncontrolled eating and emotional eating scores (p>0.05). However, there was a trend with a medium effect size (p=0.058, d=0.68) for cognitive restraint to be greater after the exercise intervention. Total food cravings (p=0.009, d=-1.19) and specific cravings of high-fat foods (p=0.023, d=-0.90), fast-food fats (p=0.009, d=-0.71) and carbohydrates/starches (p=0.009, d=-0.56) decreased from baseline to 12 weeks. Moreover, there was a trend with a large effect size for cravings of sweets (p=0.052, d=-0.86) to be lower after the exercise intervention. In summary, 12 weeks of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise reduced food cravings and increased cognitive restraint, however, these were not accompanied by changes in other eating behaviours and weekly energy intake and expenditure. The results indicate the importance of exercising for health improvements even when reductions in body mass are modest
