Delaying payments after the financial crisis: Evidence from EU companies
The paper investigates economic impact of delayed payments caused by liquidity crisis in the European Union. Using micro data sets on financial statements of 54,277 firms for the period of 2005 to 2014 inclusive, we perform panel data analysis by estimating fixed effects regression models with selected macroeconomic shocks. The results show high variability of late payments during financial crisis compare to period of relative stable economic situations and late payments is significantly evident across countries under different economic conditions. Additionally, we identify positive relationship between the response variable, late payments, and firm profitability measured with returns on assets, but negative relationship with firm total assets as it depends on the speed of collections from receivables. The results suggest delays in payment of invoices beyond the given credit period across the different European Union member countries.O
Factors affecting the adoption of electronic data interchange
Implementation of electronic data interchange (EDI) is thus more desirable and will be one of the major determinants of business success of a company. Despite the current pressure of the public sphere and all the benefits that the adoption of EDI provides, the expansion of this technology is still a minority in the Czech Republic. The aim of this paper is to identify the specifics of EDI adoption, quantify their significance, mutual conditionality and propose a new general model of EDI adoption in businesses. The conclusions of this document are based on the primary data collected through a questionnaire survey in 2015. There were the key factors influencing the likelihood of EDI adoption and their interconnectedness identified. This model reflects the main determinants of the adoption of exchange structured messages for businesses as perceived benefits, external pressure, readiness, attitude of CEO, type of product, participation of trading partners, character of company etc. This study provides a comprehensive survey of motives and barriers of EDI adoption for enterprises, which are aware of the necessary interoperability within the single European market and its highly competitive environment.O
Selenium in Goat Nutrition
The aim of the experiment was to assess the effect of selenium on the qualitative and quantitative parameters of goat milk. The experiment was conducted on an organic farm in June and July of 2016. The experiment lasted for 30 days. The breeds were chosen shorthaired. Twelve goats were categorized into the experimental group (n = 6) and the control group (n = 6). At the beginning and at the end of the experiment, milk samples were taken from each goat for the analysis. The results showed that the addition of selenium proved an effect on selenium concentration in goat milk. However, the effect of the milk components (fat, protein, lactose, urea, number of SB) and milk yield were not observed. These results confirmed that a functional food can be produced by adding selenium to the goat diet.O
Effect of Temperature Cumulation on Milk Yield of Czech Fleckvieh-Simmental Cattle
The aim of this study was to asses the effect of temperature cumulation on milk yield of Czech Fleckvieh-Simmental cattle. Experiment for this study was executed on private farm in Czech Republic with permanently open-sided barn, in which were cows stabled (49o12'36.7"N 16o23'42.1"E). Cows were stabled in free stall box system. Experiment lasted three months (May-July) of 2016. In total 114 cows were include in this study. They were divided according to yield to three groups: more than 25 kg of milk per day, 20.1-24.9 kg of milk per day and less than 20 kg of milk per day. The data loggers placed inside the stable collected data about temperature every 30 minutes. Data about milk yield were obtained from software in milk parlour. After data were collected, the sum of effective temperatures (SET) was calculated. The SET was calculated for temperatures surpassing 21 oC. Data shows that all groups were affected by rising SET. The group with yield above 25 kg of milk per day was the most affected by the high SET (r = MINUS SIGN 0.4931) in contrary with the group with less than 20 kg of milk per day (r = MINUS SIGN 0.1380). Our result suggest, that the SET might be better marker for evaluation of the impact of heat stress than temperature itself. The results of this paper also shows, that the high-yield cows are affected by cumulation of temperature more.O
Monitoring of aquatic biota in intensive fish farming system
The aim of the study was to conduct a detailed research of aquatic invertebrates in the intensive breeding system of salmonid fish in order to determine the taxonomic composition of the community and its seasonal dynamics, and to identify those species that may be hosts of parasitic disease agents. To date, this issue has not been studied at all in the Czech Republic. Monitoring was conducted on the Danish type recirculation system near the municipality of Pravíkov in the Highlands of the Czech Republic from April till November 2015. A total of 9 series of samples were taken. Macrozoobenthos was evaluated in terms of taxonomic composition and abundance. Basic physicochemical properties of water (temperature, oxygen concentration, pH and conductivity) were also measured. In total, 69 taxa of aquatic invertebrates were noted, with the wall being the richest with a mean abundance of 756 pcs/m2. Permanent groups predominated; the most numerous group was the subphylum Crustaceae, represented by a single species, Asellus aquticus.O
Economic Aspects of the Missing Data Problem - the Case of the Patient Registry
Registries are indispensable in medical studies and provide the basis for reliable study results for research questions. Depending on the purpose of use, a high quality of data is a prerequisite. However, with increasing registry quality, costs also increase accordingly. Considering these time and cost factors, this work is an attempt to estimate the cost advantages of applying statistical tools to existing registry data, including quality evaluation. Results for quality analysis showed that there are unquestionable savings of millions in study costs by reducing the time horizon and saving on average EUR 523,126 for every reduced year. Replacing additionally the over 25 % missing data in some variables, data quality was immensely improved. To conclude, our findings showed dearly the importance of data quality and statistical input in avoiding biased conclusions due to incomplete data.O
Water constructions in countryside - Case study of land use on the river Svratka in the village Ujčov (Moravia)
Buildings and facilities on waterways have significant landscaping, water management and ecological importance. They affect the landscape and create conditions for the emergence of new habitats. Small dams, mills, saws, small hydropower plants, dams and other water objects and structures, which more or less affect the flow of the surrounding countryside, are built and are building in the countryside. Within design and construction of these objects environmental relationships must be respected and in line with the sustainable exploitation of the territory. Many objects built in the past adversely affected the flow and the landscape while make it impossible the migration of fish and amphibians. A series of objects is currently non-functional and have a negative impact on the flow and the surrounding countryside. In such cases the streams are revitalized or inoperative objects are removed, fish ladders are often built. This study evaluates the possibility of using land adjacent to the fixed weir on the Svratka river in the Ujčov village, from the viewpoint of maintaining the existing biodiversity, aesthetic and economic potential of the territory. A study with several options of land use is the result.O
Study on the (bio)degradation process of bioplastic materials under industrial composting conditions
The objective of this study was to determine the biodegradability of bioplastic materials-sponge cloths-available on the European market. They are labeled as 100 % biodegradable but not certified as compostable. The test was carried out in real composting environment. The project duration was 12 weeks. The emphasis was put on discovering whether the sponge cloths are biodegradable or not. Based on the results, it can be concluded that sponge cloths have decomposed completely (sample C and sample D). Samples A have decomposed but exhibited slower degradation rate. Samples B exhibited the higher degradation rate. The main conclusion from this study is that biodegradation of bioplastics materials strongly depends on both, the environment where they are placed and the chemical nature of the material.O
Research Note Effects of preincubation and higher initiating incubation temperature of long-term stored hatching eggs on hatchability and day-old chick and yolk sac weight
We studied the effect of increased initial incubation temperature and repeated preincubation of 35-d stored eggs from 46 week old Ross 308 parental stock on the hatchability and day-old chick and yolk sac weight. Two different temperatures were applied during the first 36h and they were combined with four preincubation treatments during storage. One half of the hatching eggs (2400) were incubated for the first 36h at an incubation temperature of 38.3 oC, and the second half were incubated at a higher temperature of 39.2 oC. Four different preincubations were applied; none, once at the 7th day of hatching egg storage, twice at the 7th and 12th days of storage and three times at the 7th, 12th and 19th days of storage. Both preincubation and increased temperature had negative effects on hatchability (P<0.001). The interaction between these two factors was also significant (P<0.05). These two factors also negatively affected early and late embryonic mortality (P<0.001). However, middle embryonic mortality was not influenced. Live weight, weight of residual yolk sac and yolk sac proportion were not affected by repeated preincubation nor by increased temperature over the first 36h of incubation (P>0.05). A higher initial temperature decreased chick yolk free body mass (P<0.05).Although neither increased initial temperature in the setter nor repeated preincubation affected one day old chick weights, these treatments were not suitable for long-term stored eggs because of decreased hatchability and impairment of one day chick quality expressed as yolk free body mass.O
Measuring the Public Perception of the European Integration Process: Evidence from the United Kingdom and Germany
This paper investigates a new method of measuring public perception of European integration policies. The methodology is based on a monthly frequency of news generating a negative attitude toward the EU integration process in newspapers from 2010:1 to 2018:12. The studies concerning similar topic are mostly based on survey data, which does not allow measuring dissatisfaction with individual political acts. The newly constructed indexes show that the identified spikes correspond to all major European integration events and can capture public disagreement attitude with the implementation of individual policies on a European or national level. The results are compared with the interest of individuals with the use of Google trend data analysis. Indexes may be useful to understand the non-economic cost in policy decision making, the same as in the question of the ambivalence of Europe.O
