A retrospective on the 2008 financial crisis: in-depth analysis

    No full text
The financial crisis has always been one of the most worrying and talked-about topics in finance. Triggered by a series of interconnected factors, the main causes included the housing market bubble and subprime mortgages. The wide-ranging and long-lasting consequences included a global economic recession, rising unemployment, massive losses for investors, and deteriorating public finances in many countries. In the liberal capitalist economy, financial crises are frequent and repetitive phenomena, hence the importance of analyzing the 2008 financial crisis to prevent future ones. Regulations and laws such as the Dodd-Frank Act and the Basel III reform have been put in place to meet the challenges of this crisis. It is against this backdrop that the present document focuses on an in-depth analysis of the causes and consequences of the financial crisis, as well as an overview of the regulations, laws, and reforms put in place to meet these challenges. The various factors that led to the crisis, such as the formation of a real estate bubble, inappropriate monetary policies, sub-prime mortgages, and credit default swaps, have been meticulously analyzed to provide a comprehensive view of the deep roots of the crisis. The repercussions of the crisis, including bank failures, mass bankruptcies of major financial institutions (LEHMEN BROTHERS), unemployment rates, and stock market fluctuations, were also examined to highlight the considerable impact of the crisis on various sectors of the economy. The main objective of this research is to highlight the influence of the adoption of e-banking channels on customer loyalty in the context of the development of mobile money in Cameroon. In the context of our study, we are therefore using a mixed approach, a complementary design that manipulates both quantitative and qualitative research, letting the two complement each other in the strengths of one or the other. The inferential statistical analysis will use multiple linear regression preceded by factorial analysis (FA), more specifically principal component analysis (PCA) to extract the dimensions of the variables used in our research. Our sample consisted of three hundred and ninety (390) individuals/customers of commercial banks in Cameroon. The econometric manipulations by the OLS method through the use of the STUDENT test and the FISHER test provide information on the individual and global significance of the parameters of the multiple linear regression model in order to evaluate the influence of the independent variables extracted from the PCA on customer loyalty (score of the dimensions retained in the research) in the context of the development of mobile money in Cameroon. At the end of our investigations in the field, we found that the adoption of internet banking improves customer loyalty in the context of the development of mobile money in Cameroon (H1), the adoption of mobile banking strengthens customer loyalty in the context of the development of mobile money in Cameroon (H2) and the adoption of ATMs and debit cards increases customer loyalty in the context of the development of mobile money in Cameroon (H3). Despite the results obtained, it is important to stress that for a successful digital transformation, Cameroonian banks must first ensure that the physical framework and environment of their businesses are suitable.

    No full text
The relationship between rent and economic growth in Morocco is an important subject that merits in-depth analysis. The concept of rent generally refers to income derived from natural resources or monopolies, while economic growth represents the positive evolution of a country’s production and economic activities over a given period. In Morocco, this relationship has been shaped by various historical, political, and economic factors, which have influenced how rent has been generated, distributed, and invested. The methodology adopted in this article is mainly descriptive, providing a detailed overview of the relationship between rents and economic growth in Morocco. This article begins by presenting the conceptual and theoretical framework of the rent - economic growth duo. It then examines how rent, particularly artificial rent (as opposed to natural rent, which resembles a Natural gifts), can influence the country's economic growth. This paper also discusses measures taken by the government to combat this phenomenon. By better understanding this complex relationship, we will be able to propose solutions to stimulate economic growth while reducing dependence on rent.   Keywords: Economic Growth; Rent; Economic Rent; Institutions.

    No full text
The debate between free trade and open access in the context of Moroccan exports raises crucial questions. While free trade promotes economic growth by eliminating trade barriers, open access emphasizes the overall availability of resources. In the case of Morocco, this dichotomy takes on a particular dimension due to the significance of its diverse sectors. Advocates for free trade highlight increased competitiveness in international markets, while proponents of open access emphasize the importance of ensuring access to local products for everyone. Examining these two approaches closely, it becomes essential to find a balance that promotes both economic development and national self-sufficiency. Morocco has established strategic free trade agreements (FTAs) with several global partners, including the European Union, the United States, Turkey, and countries in the MENA region. These agreements aim to promote the free movement of goods and services, fostering economic growth by opening new trade opportunities. Through these partnerships, Morocco has diversified its export markets, strengthening its position in the global economy and boosting key sectors such as agriculture, industry, and services. To analyze the impact of these FTAs on the open access of Moroccan exports, we will conduct an empirical verification using a gravity model to understand the influence of these agreements on Morocco's exportable supply.   Keywords : Free Trade, Open access, Exports, Free trade agreement, Gravity model. JEL Classification : F10, F13, F14, F50, O13, O24.

    No full text
The aims of this study is to analyse the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in the relationship between employee retention practices and the performance of Cameroonian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) during a health crisis. The data required for the study were obtained from a questionnaire survey of 271 SMEs operating in the catering, accommodation and transport sectors. After testing for multicollinearity between the independent variables in the study using the chi-square statistic, multinomial logistic regression analysis was employed. The results of the multi-colinearity tests indicated that there was no relationship between the variables in the study. The results of the econometric analyses demonstrated that the adoption of ICT by certain SMEs in the service sector mediates the relationship between loyalty practices and SME performance. In particular, SMEs that adopted or improved their use of ICTs as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic were able to offer their employees enhanced job security and flexible working hours, thereby improving their performance. This result thus supports the relevance of a contingency approach in defining SME employee loyalty practices in times of crisis and the necessity of associating ICTs with the production and sales system of Cameroonian SMEs in order to improve performance. Furthermore, the results indicate that the types of ICT influence the type of employee loyalty practices adopted by SMEs.   Keywords: Employee loyalty, ICT, performance, SME, crisis. This article is part of a national context marked by the pursuit of the Moroccan government to ensure the right to health care and medical coverage[1]. It’s part of an international context guided by the 17 SDGs Declaration[2]. As well, in the empirical studies, several works have been devoted to the study of the determinants of Productivity in Morocco. However, all of the analyses carried out by these works have remained at a global macroeconomic level without taking into consideration the data from the regions and the qualitative dimensions of health and education. This study investigates the impact of health on worker productivity for a sample of 16 Moroccan regions from 1994 to 2019. Firstly, to estimate this relationship, we use two proxies that take into account the quantitative and the qualitative dimensions of health: the number of doctors per capita and the number of consultations of public physicians reported to the labor force by region. The empirical methodology is based firstly on the employ of both Pedroni and Kao cointegration tests and the Dumitrescu and Hurlin causality test. Secondly, we apply the regression of an endogenous growth model augmented by human capital to explain worker productivity. The results of the cointegration tests accept the existence of long-term relationship between proxies of health and the productivity of Moroccan workers. However, Dumitrescu_Hurlin causality test results accept the short-term two-way causality relationship just for one proxy of health. The results of the regression assert that only the proxy of quality of public health capital affects positively and significantly worker productivity. Faced with these results, and to improve worker productivity, the authorities must make more effort to improve the efficiency of public health capital.
