Fullerene and nanotube models in Bolyai - Lobachevsky hyperbolic geometry H3 on the 200th anniversary of its discovery
The Archimedean solid (5, 6, 6), where regular pentagon, hexagon and hexagon surround each vertex, so altogether 60 vertices (with carbon atoms for C60 fullerene). 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons bound this football polyhedron, as a regular (say white) icosahedron truncated by 12 (black) pentagons at its 12 vertices. </p
Bullying, spirituality, anxiety and depression
A recently developed Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT)-based process has been used to understand and explore the nature of spirituality and spiritual experience and its healing characteristics. Experiences of self-worth and dignity (both are operationalized) as the core of spirituality are directly injured by bullying with resultant depression and anxiety. Bullying experiences with progression to actively bullying are devastating to our spiritual core and undermine fundamental faith in self, others and life. This level of injury is often not recognized by many bullying programs. This preliminary communication is presented for researchers in these areas to consider how this process may be used for further research and prevention and intervention efforts. </p
Risk factors for COVID-19 infection in people with 4th dose of bivalent mRNA vaccines in general medicine from October 2022 to February 2023
Background: Risk factors of COVID-19 infection in people vaccinated with the 4th dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine remain the subject of debate. Objective: To identify risk and protective factors of COVID-19 in vaccinated people with 4th dose of bivalent mRNA vaccines.Location: General Practitioner consultation in Toledo (Spain).Methodology: Longitudinal and prospective study of cases and controls of adult patients with or without COVID-19 infection in vaccinated people with 4th dose of bivalent mRNA vaccines, from October 1, 2022, to February 28, 2023.Results: Five cases of COVID-19 infections in vaccinated people with 4th dose were included, which were compared with 52 controls (with 4th dose and without COVID-19 after the booster). The risk factors for COVID-19 infection with the 4th dose were: Women (RR = 1.67), Socio-Health Care Workers (RR = 10.39; p = 0.0349), Chronic Diseases of the blood (RR = 6.9. p = 0.0322), Chronic Diseases of Endocrine (RR = 2.72. p = 0.039425), and Chronic Diseases of Circulatory system (RR = 1.87).Conclusion: In the general practice setting in Toledo, Spain, being a socio-health care worker and having chronic diseases presumably associated with immunosuppression were statistically significant risk factors for COVID-19 infection in people vaccinated with the 4th dose of bivalent mRNA vaccines. The most exposed or immunosuppressed people continue to be at risk of becoming infected with SARS-CoV-2 despite having received the 4th dose of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, so other preventive methods in these groups are advisable.</p
Translational movement of the eyeball under the influence of an air impulse
The study of the biomechanics of the eye is important for understanding the mechanisms of its functioning and the causes of the development of pathologies. New knowledge helps to better diagnose a number of diseases and develop effective methods for their treatment. The theoretical results obtained can give impetus to new research in this area. In this paper, the displacement of the eyeball as a whole body along the optical axis is considered.</p
Two methods for determining combinatorial identities
Two methods are presented for determining advanced combinatorial identities. The first is based on extending the original identity so that it can be expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions whereupon tabulated values of the functions can be used to reduce the identity to a simpler form. The second is a computer method based on Koepf's version of the Wilf-Zeilberger approach that has been implemented in a suite of intrinsic routines in Maple. As a consequence, some new identities are presented. </p
An innovative method and a medical screening device for cancer detection in real-time
Histopathology is the main technique to assess the presence of cancer cells in biopsy material and for the evaluation of positive resection margins, but it is not real-time. Older methods to assess resection margin intraoperatively are either time-consuming or exhibit a low accuracy. More recent imaging techniques have various drawbacks, like the need for exogenous contrast agents or excessive time to assess the entire resection surface or a low diagnostic performance in detecting certain types of cancer. The purpose of the current research work is the development of a medical screening device for cancer cells detection with very high accuracy and selectivity, based on a newly developed method in order to experimentally measure in real-time the excitation response of the charged elements of the biological tissue under study to the applied alternative electrical field, over a wide range of frequency spectra. The aim of this study is to present an innovative method and results from a prototype medical screening device, which allows the selective and “real-time” detection of cancer cells of any type among normal cells in any tissue type. The innovation of the proposed method lies in the view of the cell membrane emulation as an electrical circuit and also in the ability to experimentally measure in real-time the excitation response of the charged elements of the biological tissue under studies like ions, interfaces or dipoles to the applied alternative electrical field, over a wide range of frequency spectra according to the dielectric spectroscopy method. The ions can very easily follow the variations of the applied alternating electric field moving along the dynamic lines of the field. In contrast, the incapability of the abnormal neoplastic cellular formations to follow the frequency changes causes them to perform dipole oscillation instead of moving along the dynamic lines of the field. This experimentally appears as a significant increase of the capacitive component contribution to the total impedance of the tissue, relative to the purely electrical resistance contribution of the ions. A model, backed by the relevant mathematical equations, has been developed to integrate the unknown impedance of both the tissue under assessment and the interdigital micro-sensor with the known complex impedance of the data acquisition system. The ability to selectively detect cancer cells has an obvious interest and various applications in cancer diagnosis and therapy. </p
Antimicrobial prescription pattern in the Deido health district, Douala, Cameroon
Inappropriate antimicrobial prescriptions are among the highest contributing factors to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Most low and middle-income (LMICS) countries with high AMR burdens like Cameroon, seldom document information on prescription patterns, whereas this information is crucial in addressing inappropriate antimicrobial prescriptions. This study was therefore designed to elucidate antimicrobial prescription patterns in order to tailor interventions to mitigate AMR in Cameroon. The study adopted a multicentre cross-sectional design. Information on antimicrobial prescriptions was collected from four hospitals within the Deido Health District, between October 2019 and March 2020. Of the 1398 participants that were enrolled in the study, the most presented age group were participants aged 15-45 years 913(65.3%) and prescriptions were higher amongst females (923,53.6%). The highest number of antimicrobial prescriptions was made in the outpatient department 592(42.3%) followed by the pediatric unit, 344(24.6%). Most of the prescriptions were for patients with respiratory tract infections 436 (31.2%), followed by those with digestive tract infections 248 (17.7%). The most frequently prescribed class of drugs were the Penicillins 690 (40.3%, 37.8 – 42.6), with Amoxicillin clavulanic acid accounting for 27.8% of the overall prescriptions followed by Cephalosporins 392 (22.7, 20.6 – 24.7), with Ceftriaxone being the most prescribed in the class (13.3%). The need for prescription was mainly determined by clinical judgement (61.1%), while only 9.5% of prescriptions were based on antimicrobial sensitivity test. In the struggle to mitigate AMR, there is a great need to exploit data on prescription patterns and develop stewardship programs in order to optimise antimicrobial use in Cameroon. We emphasize in this communication the potential benefits and outcomes of foresight thinking, such as improved resilience, better resource allocation, and effective response strategies.</p
The conclusion of the limitless hotel problem
Mathematician Cantor's Set theory appeared paradox and mathematical theory crisis. The famous German mathematician Hilbert used "Hilbert Hotel" to describe Cantor's Set theory paradox. At that time, people could not find a strict mathematical theory to refute Cantor's Set theory, but let everyone get used to and accept Cantor's Set theory, and thought that it was not a paradox. After the proposal of the limitless Hotel question, it caused controversy between the two parties. I quoted the definition of mathematical logic and got the correct answer.Proved that there is no paradox in limitless hotels (Reason: limitless hotels cannot increase the number of new guests staying.).A deep analysis of Cantor's limitless elements and the infeasibility of one-to-one correspondence was conducted.2020 Mathematics Subject Classification: 03G27, 03F07, 03D45, 03F55</p
Duodenal injury: A challenging diagnostic enigma for clinicians
The objective of the article is to familiarize clinicians with duodenal injury and to recognize timely intervention to prevent morbidity and mortality associated with such injury. Although uncommon, duodenal injury challenges a clinician’s ability to diagnose and treat it in a timely fashion to prevent any associated mortality. The retroperitoneal anatomy makes duodenal injury difficult to diagnose. However, a high degree of suspicion based on the mechanism of injury and appropriate, timely diagnostic study leads to the correct identification of injury to the duodenum. The specific treatment depends on the type of injury that is detected. In conclusion, early recognition, and timely intervention of duodenal injury leads to a successful outcome. </p
How to anticipate and control possible future health crises through foresight approaches using the COVID-19 pandemic crisis?
Prospective studies have evolved towards a more integrated, complex, and diachronic way of thinking about the future. What is the future? It is a set of possibilities, delimited by what we think is impossible (limits of plausibility) and by the difficulty of estimating the degree of plausibility of an event in a V.U.C.A. period. The term V.U.C.A. refers to the four characteristics that reflect the world according to military thinking: Volatility; Uncertainty; Complexity; Ambiguity. The COVID-19 crisis is an example of V.U.C.A with an uncertain situation. Foresight is a discipline that allows us to understand the forces at work in the construction of the future. Resolutely oriented towards action, it aims to enlighten the choices of the present by exploring possible futures. Strongly linked to strategy, it allows the determination of a desirable future, a vision, and the implementation of the means to achieve it. Foresight is exploratory (of possible futures), normative (creating a chosen future), quantitative (using statistical data), and qualitative (using survey data). Foresight does not foresee, it anticipates. Prospective approaches could be used more in particular in the field of health to define more or less pessimistic scenarios in order to define strategies of anticipation of futures that we do not want to see happen. The foresight for pandemics and epidemics initiatives can create a space for dialogue and bring together diverse perspectives and lived experiences. We emphasize in this communication the potential benefits and outcomes of foresight thinking, such as improved resilience, better resource allocation, and effective response strategies.</p
