Comparative evaluation of platelet indices in Preeclamptic and Non-Preeclamptic patients in the Enugu Metropolis
Preeclampsia (PE) is one of the most common causes of maternal mortality and morbidity. It complicates 5% - 6% of all pregnancies globally and up to 15% of pregnancies in Sub-Saharan Africa. The present study was designed to determine the values of platelet indices in preeclamptic patients compared to non-preeclamptic controls. A total of 70 patients comprising 35 preeclamptic cases and 35 non-preeclamptic controls aged 18-40 years were recruited for the study. Blood samples (3mls) were collected from patients for the estimation of platelet indices using the Mindray 530 BC automated hematology analyzer, Mindray, Japan. The data were analyzed by SPSS version 22 using T - test and Pearson correlation. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05 and the result was presented as mean + SD. The result revealed a significant increase in the MPV (13.5 + 0.18 vs. 09.4 + 0.20), PDW (16.2 + 0.037 vs. 06.0 + 0.19) and PLCR (38.0 + 1.19 vs. 26.2 + 1.19) between the preeclamptic patients and non-preeclamptic controls. There was a significant decrease in the PLT (174.1 + 15.5 vs. 231.1 + 15.05), PCT (1.9 + 0.14 vs. 3.3 + 0.75), and PLCC (60.7 + 3.24 vs. 69.4 + 3.17) for the preeclamptic cases compared to non-preeclamptic control. These findings may be useful in the management of the adverse outcomes of preeclampsia for the Enugu population.</p
Preparation, production and characteristics of sugarcane vinegar
Sugarcane is one of the main crops worldwide, and it has an important impact on environmental issues. Sugarcane is used in daily routine life in many ways like as vinegar, jiggery, juices etc. In India sugarcane crop is best cultivated in the west U.P. Sugarcane original vinegar drink with high nutritional quality was produced from fresh sugarcane juice using the yeast culture and acetic acid bacteria by fermentation techniques such as submerged alcoholic fermentation followed by acetic fermentation at room temperature. Refined sugarcane is the primary product of sugarcane juice, during its processing, various other valuable products are also obtained in an unrefined form such as brown sugar, molasses, jaggery and vinegar. Sugarcane juice is widely used in the treatment of jaundice, hemorrhage, dysuria, and other urinary disease. Nowadays sugarcane vinegar is also used in Indian kitchens commonly in pickles, salads, etc. Vinegar is extremely useful for human health including antimicrobial activity, blood pressure reduction, antioxidant activity, reduction in the effects of diabetes, and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Phenolic acid in vinegar can scavenge superoxide anion and free radicals in vivo resulting in a potent antioxidant activity.</p
Study the effect of different shapes of plume rise on Gaussian plume models and its maximum in unstable conditions
Exposure to radioactive pollutants such as Iodine-135 I135 seriously threatens public health and environmental balance. Monitoring and managing these pollutants require expensive economic equipment that is not suitable for low-income countries such as Egypt. Therefore, trying to derive a mathematical model that estimates the concentrations of these radioactive pollutants with high accuracy and a low relative error coefficient compared to the actually measured values is very important. Therefore a mathematical Gaussian model was received to estimate the concentrations of I135 emitted from the research nuclear reactor in the Inshas region in Egypt using different shapes of plume rise in unstable conditions.A comparison between the derived model and its maximum values with observed concentrations data measuring on Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority for I135 in unstable conditions has been found. The derived model may be applied to estimate and predict the emissions of any radioactive pollutant for any similar area and similar type of used reactor, which provides high-precision technology with zero economic cost.The statistical technique shows that the entire Gaussian model and its maximum inside a factor of two with observed concentration data achieved 98%. In addition, the statistics show that all the Gaussian plume models and their maximum have a correlation coefficient of about 0.95%. Also, the normalized mean square error. And the fraction bias. are near-zero values in all Gaussian models and their maximum. </p
Are measurements of non-cholesterol sterols in plasma useful in identifying susceptibility to atherosclerosis?
This review discusses the validity of plasma non-cholesterol sterols precursors of cholesterol synthesis and phytosterols in the identification of human atherosclerosis. There is an insufficient demonstration that these sterols are valid methods of measurement of cholesterol metabolism. All markers, including cholestanol, that derive from cholesterol synthesis may only reflect body retention of sterols and not necessarily increased intestinal absorption. Also, in most studies, conventional risk factors of atherosclerosis, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, gender, and age were not taken into account. </p
High-frequency modeling of dissolved oxygen and net ecosystem metabolism using STELLA
This paper proposes a high-frequency process model for estimating Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and net ecosystem metabolism (NEM) in streams. The model was implemented by using STELLA to predict DO concentrations at one-minute intervals downstream of a 150-m headwater reach of the Abant Creek (Bolu, Turkey). NEM was also predicted at each interval by using a two-station method along the reach. DO, water temperature and other environmental variables used in the model were measured during 17 months between August 2015 and December 2016. The model was run for a day representing every month of the year. Model parameters were calibrated and validated according to mean absolute error (MAE) between measured and simulated values of DO and NEM. The results showed that the model appeared to be promising in terms of high-frequency estimations of DO.</p
Biomass to hydrogen: A short biomass potential availability and conversion survey for Dutch municipalities
The local availability of lignocellulosic biomass was estimated for an arbitrary but representative Dutch municipality to facilitate the conversion and use of hydrogen on a decentralized scale. This study reveals that there is a large potential for this biomass at many locations to play important roles in the energy transition. It is meant as a call to the scientific community to activate individuals and get some inspiration.</p
Evaluation of the toxicity of aqueous extracts of Aframomum melegueta, Picralima nitida, and Garcinia cola in Wistar rats
In order to determine the risks to human health associated with the use of certain medicinal plants, including Aframomum melegueta, Garcinia kola and Picralima nitida in a preclinical evaluation of the resistance, a pool of these three aqueous extracts was given once daily for ten days by gavage in Wistar rats. Haematological and biochemical analyzes after oral administration revealed a decrease in certain hepatic biomarkers such as glucose, Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), etc., and renal biomarkers such as urea, creatinine, and creatinine kinase); increase in certain biomarkers such as Aspartate Transaminase (AST), an indicator of kidney and liver capacity.</p
Endoscopic-assisted calvarial vault remodeling without postoperative helmets for treating infants with sagittal synostosis
Objective: Various endoscopically assisted minimally invasive surgical procedures have been described for the management of isolated nonsyndromic sagittal synostosis. All these techniques necessitate the use of postoperative helmets without immediate correction of the head shape. Here, we document the safety and sustainable acceptable outcomes of an endoscopic minimally invasive approach with full barrel staving without using a postoperative cranial helmet.Methods: A single-institution cohort analysis was performed on five patients who underwent endoscopically assisted minimally invasive calvarial vault remodeling without using a postoperative helmet for isolated nonsyndromic sagittal synostosis between 2017 and 2022. Variables analyzed were age at the time of surgery, gender, Estimated Blood Loss (EBL), operative time, postoperative complications, and pre-and postoperative Cephalic Index (CI).Results: Three male and two female infants were treated at our hospital in 2017–2022 with a mean follow-up of 32.6 months. At the time of the surgery, the mean age was ±3.5 months (range 10–58 months), the mean weight was 4.54 kg (standard deviation, SD ± 1.56), the mean EBL was 34.6 ml (range 20 ml – 54 ml) and mean surgical time from skin incision to dressing application was 120.7 min. The mean CI for all patients was 66.88 ± 4 (SD) preoperatively vs. 81.52 ± 2.38 (SD) postoperatively (p < 0.001 by paired Student’s t - test). There were no deaths or intraoperative complications.Conclusions: We present a novel endoscopically assisted minimally invasive procedure without using a postoperative helmet. This was a safe and efficacious procedure for isolated sagittal craniosynostosis, with improvements in CI at a mean follow-up of 32.6 months.</p
The importance of the ecology of infectious diseases in the context of Chytridiomycosis and COVID-19
Pathogenic microorganisms and viruses are components of ecosystems. They have constructed endemic interrelationships with specific host species throughout the history of coevolution The spillover of pathogens from natural habitats into other areas causes encounters between the pathogens and new hosts that have never evolved immunity or resistance. The result is a rapid spread of “Emerging Infectious Disease” (EID).During the acceleration of globalization, humans and societies have come to be the targets of infectious diseases caused by pathogens that have emerged from natural habitats. In the past few years, the newest EID, SARS-CoV-2, has spread throughout the world and has caused serious harm to human health and welfare.With the growing social concern about the risks of the EID pandemic, there has been discussion that the destruction of biodiversity and environmental changes are closely related to the EID pandemic. There is a need to rethink the importance of conserving biodiversity if humans are to control the risk of pathogenic viruses and live in harmony with them.</p
Concretes on a composite gypsum binder using limestone stone crushing waste
The article discusses the possibility of obtaining Composite Gypsum Binders (CGB) and heavy concretes based on them using local raw materials from Palestine. As an active mineral additive in the composition of the composite gypsum binder, it is proposed to use finely dispersed quartz sand with a specific surface area of 500 m2/kg, on the surface of which, during grinding, a disturbed microlayer is formed containing a limited amount of amorphous SiO2, which is capable of binding Ca(OH)2 at ordinary temperatures with the formation of insoluble compounds, that is, it has pozzolanic activity, and as a result provides a significant increase in the strength of composites, increases their water resistance. Based on the developed composite gypsum binder with sufficiently high strength (24.8 MPa) and water resistance (K = 0.73), heavy concretes were obtained with a class of compressive strength B7.5 - B15, for use in residential, public, and industrial buildings in the form of load-bearing, self-supporting and enclosing structures.</p
